TESTEMONAIL:  Right and Discordianism allows room for personal interpretation. You have your theories and I have mine. Unlike Christianity, Discordia allows room for ideas and opinions, and mine is well-informed and based on ancient philosophy and theology, so, my neo-Discordian friends, open your minds to my interpretation and I will open my mind to yours. That's fair enough, right? Just claiming to be discordian should mean that your mind is open and willing to learn and share ideas. You guys are fucking bashing me and your laughing at my theologies and my friends know what's up and are laughing at you and honestly this is my last shot at putting a label on my belief structure and your making me lose all hope of ever finding a ideological group I can relate to because you don't even know what the fuck I'm talking about and everything I have said is based on the founding principals of real Discordianism. Expand your mind.

Richter

To draw a parralel to GURPS...

Science =/= Science!

Still, the genre does have a creative aspect that goes beyond designing a better outfit or shitty poetry.  Sure, kids will paste gears on everything and wear goggles.  Hopefully other folks will read "Difference Engine" by Gibson, and get into the more technical side of things.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

It's almost like society is starting to think scientific things are COOL.

(I know Steampunk isn't strictly scientific, but it's science-themed.)

problem is, it just has to *look* sciencey.

just like stonewashed jeans just have to *look* all worn out.

The fashion version of steampunk seems to be:

1. Victorian
2. Gears
3. Science
4. ???
5. PROFIT!

It's a nice aesthetic, really. And doomed to commercial exploitation.

I am going to start telling people that my interior decor theme is "Steampunk" and see what the reactions are.

"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

The look is the reality of the thing, when you're talking about fashions.  It's not about science.  It's about science being cool.

Which it patently was to begin with, but anyway.

Triple Zero

nononono, it will make sciencey-looking things "cool", but all the kids will refer to it as

"LOL i'm wearing SCIENCE!! look at meeee i'm sooo SMRT lololol this GEAR like totally proves it"

while still happily failing their math and physics classes, cuz that's just not cool, i mean HELLO?! everybody knoas that REAL SCIENCE stuff is made of brass and not stainless steel, also the goggles in chemistry class look LAEM!1, but they won't let me wear the ones i bought at Gap THIS SUXXXXX

Cain

Just like grunge actually made being poor and unconcerned with fashion popular, you mean?

Suu

I still dress grunge and have since like, 1989. I don't care. It's comfy and I am poor, so it works.

It doesn't count unless you have a choice.  Now go back to your wage-slavery.

Steampunk has just jumped the shark.

They did a piece about it on NPR.

Great, now seriously boned corsets won't be cool anymore. Avril Lavigne will wear one next week and Dita Von Teese will retire.

You act like it'll be any different from what we have now.

Triple Zero

no, just that steampunk will follow the same route.

Maybe that's the first step in convincing her that making A2M porn is a feminist act.
