China's not invading anywhere.

I hate to break everyone's "fear China" bubble, but its not happening.  China barely has a capable blue water Navy, which is a prerequisite for anyone serious about considering tangling with NATO.  Japan are invested in Afghanistan reconstruction and Japan scares the shit out of China, because its rich, has a militaristic past, is procuring arms at an ever increasing rate and is within short distance of its most heavily populated/economically most vibrant regions.  I wont even go into China's fears about the Seventh Fleet and USAF pounding what professional soldiers they have into fishfood in the South China Sea.

Not to mention China already has a high level of civil duisturbance in the first place.  The CCP are looking to deal with the threat of revolution from below, not go picking fights outside their country.  Its possible a crazy nationalist faction could take charge, or if the CCP was faced with the choice between war and revolution they would choose war....but their power projection capability sucks, and the US has the regional allies and diplomatic clout to give China lots of grief.

China may be a Great Power....but its hardly a superpower, and wont be for a long time to come.

Hm... I actually am agitated, now.  This post might survive yet.

Americans owe about $2 trillion, almost $20,000 per household (as of 2003 - see: http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/SavingandDebt/P70581.asp ).  That doesn't include mortgage debt, either (which we all know has skyrocketed).  Now, we're tapping into auto loans to cover the spread.  How does anyone really, truly *own* anything anymore?  And, if we don't own the things that were formally taken for granted, who does?  Banks?  Big Business?  The government?
According to http://www.seeingtheforest.com/archives/2006/03/who_owns_americ.htm , we don't own diddly skwat.  So, if a big nation like China comes along, bails us out in the short-run and then withdraws their fiscal support, better start saving up those discarded yogurt containers.  You'll need the plastic for nourishment.

It is impossible to own real estate. If you don't believe me just don't pay the property taxes.

Tr00f.  Thanks for saying this--I never get the "we're all gonna be CHINESE in 10 years!" shit.  NO, we won't.  We'll be more Latino here in CA, that's for sure, because we already ARE--but that's old news, as we were Mexican BEFORE California was even HERE, so yeah, we'll be pretty well Mexican AGAIN.  Feh.  Who cares.  New boss, same as the old boss.  But I digress.

China and India both have garnered this fear-loathing-respect circle in popular media that has me scratching my head.  Somewhat like the Japanese scare of the 80's...THEY'RE GONNA GETCHA!  SOON THEY'LL BE TAKING EVERYTHIN OVER AND R00L TEH WORLD!!!oneone

But no. They have a better chance of fixing their internal problems FIRST, their neighbors SECOND, then deal with the West.  That's a looooong time coming.  Longer than any of us will be around.  And nowadays, as the US invasion of Iraq goes to show--battles are better fought and won over a boardroom with shares and international monies changing hands than with hand-to-hand, bombs and rocket-launchers.

There is indeed a sharp increase in anti-Chinese sentiments here, as of late. The Chinese are starting to take the place of Latinos as the trendy people to fear and distrust. All the scared people express their fear of the "giant red billion-legged centipede that is Communist China" by saying "Oh, those Chinese, they're gonna start the next World War", or "theres something fundamentally wrong about their culture that I just don't get." or "Who knows what they're putting in our food!"

Meh. I just find it all ridiculous. Same old pattern of racism and paranoia.

The real fear should come from Saudi Arabia. I'm sure everyone has noticed the crippling effects of oil prices, and if Saudi Arabia should decide to stop trading with the U.S., our infrastructure would be crippled within months. Then we'll all end up fat and lazy because we can't get to work...oh wait...

As for Latino immigrants, the only thing to fear from the 'Latino Invasion' is the idiotic psychopaths who want to build a ginormous wall around the country with Latino-seeking missles and maybe laser turrets. It's kind of ironic when everyone yells 'They're taking our jobs!!' but all the jobs have been shipped overseas, so what are they taking?

The real thing America should fear is our own inability to elect a legislative and executive branch capable of using common sense to achieve anything.

Last 2 posts are win.  The Saudi Arabia thing, unfortunately, is another American/Western chimera of a particularly nasty nature, but other than that...well done.

-fear mongering -i don't believe in it or support it but this thread seems to be the place for spreading the fear ,so just for fun i would like to propose .

we should all be afraid of pakistan . here is why -they are a unstable dictatorship , they have nukes , there top scientist already sold the nuke secrets to "the really scary people" ,they are in a lukewarm war with there neighbour India ,there schools and mosques teach the kill unbelievers brand of fundamentalist Islam ,the number  1 "bogeyman " may be hiding there ,there  sense of self preservation "due to instability" is questionable  unlike china Iran and N Korea who have a  strong will/ability to sustain there survival , the nature and type of  big problem that might come from there is hard to predict , the consequences and direction the subsequent chain of events might take is even harder to predict.

if the shit ever does hit the fan i nominate pakistan as a likely point of contact

the fear has now passed please return to you normal daily activities

If China is going to start a war with anyone, my guess is it would be Taiwan. There's still plenty of random animosity between them. Random animosity. Randimosity. Randy Moss-it, E!

I personally love Chinese food.

Oooh Oooh!!. Since so many people are under so much stress being afraid of China, let's file a frivolous lawsuit for emotional distress!

Then we can fix the defecit and boost the economy!

US Seventh Fleet deterred aggression towards Taiwan before.  Furthermore, the situation is tense, but its kind of like the situation between North and South Korea....there is a high level of, shall we say "understanding" between the two about Taiwanese independence.  China's smart enough to know they've survived this long without Taiwan and that while getting it back would be hugely beneficial, pissing off their top two trading partners in the effort to do so would be a bad idea.  Its just not worth it, from a cost/benefit analysis, thoough they'll keep up the pretence to appease nationalists.

Also NN, I agree.  The China threat is being hyped by a bunch of National Security inclined, Republican linked militarists and thinkers who are sore they got owned by the end of the Cold War and are looking for new relevance for their discredited political theory (offensive realism).  While I'm sure many of those advocating it are not racist, their rhetoric often appeals to those who are.  Furthermore, the Chinese economy is basically a free market anyway, since the state owned companies allow their prices to be set by market forces.  China's hardly looking to export a worldwide Communist revolution like Lenin was.
