Re: Sappho.

I don't know whether she was gay or straight or bi or anything in between. Honestly, I don't care. I think her poetry is beautiful, and I think it's really cool that she's the first female poet to have had her work written down (at least that we have record of, to my knowledge). So that's pretty bad ass. But mostly, I love that it's all in fragments--because I only have these tiny pieces to work with, I can make what I want of them, feel how I want to feel about them, interpret them however I want. Basically, their value can become very personalized. It also just blows my mind that her writing has such an impact on people that even though all we have left are these little fragments (though some are of a good size), people still continue to read it and pass it down and find value in it, after thousands of years. That's fucking bad ass. So there's a nice reminder of how something tiny--like a little fragment of poetry, or a one-sentence memebomb, or just something you say in passing--can end up having these huge ripples.

Yes, exactly!

The tenth Muse.

Was it Plato that said that? Or Homer, I forget...

Plato.  She was post-Homeric.  550 BC or so, I believe.

Suu

Right. I should probably have remembered these things.

Richter

I'm engraving the sequence of notable Greek / Roman author - philosopher - scientists into the back of my slide rule for future reference.  This thread has reawakened me to the complexity of it all.

Anyone ever think about how Richter inhabits the same reality as you and just scream and scream and scream, but in a good way?   :lulz:

Speaking of tramp stamps, I think mine is going to be next rather than getting my legs finished (MAKE UP YOUR MIND, SUU!)

It's going to be the Latin quote Ad Astra Per Aspera, but I'm thinking of writing it in the Greek alphabet. So normal people will see it and think it says like, "Zeus was here" or something, but if someone can actually READ Greek, they're going to be like, "Wait...wtf?" Even better if they know Latin.

So essentially, it would look like this: AD ASTRA PER ASPERA

Sir Squid Diddimus

so... what's it mean?

Suu

To [The] stars through hardships.

A variant of is is Per Aspera Ad Astra. Or....Through hardships to the stars.

I know it's used in Star Trek, but that ain't why I want it.

The best back tattoo I saw was this girl who had, in "misfits"-style lettering:

"SCRAP ME FOR PARTS"

It was really fun to look at while... recreating.

Did you aim for it?

No... It wasn't like it was tattooed on her chin, or anything.
