Also just noticed the chick in Cloverfield who gets bitten by one of the smaller monsters...her eyes go dark and then she bleeds out of them and dies vomiting blood.  Mental status unknown, but there's nothing to say she didn't go insane, and it would be irresponsible not to speculate about possible links.
