Hundreds of Asian youths threw rocks, bottles and fireworks at riot police last night as anger over an anti-Muslim demonstration spilled onto the streets of Harrow.

Police made ten arrests and fought a series of skirmishes with masked protesters close to Harrow Central Mosque, which had been targeted by demonstrators.

The demonstration was organised by two groups, the English Defence League and Stop the Islamisation of Europe. It was called off after the first 15 supporters to turn up were chased off by counter-demonstrators who outnumbered them heavily.

Well, that's part of the story.  What actually happened was the first 15 got run off, before the rest had arrived, and the police told them they couldn't protect them, so they decided to call it a day.

The EDL, for those of you who don't know, are a BNP front organisation, whose main aim is to turn their electoral success into street muscle, like the British right had in the 70s and 80s.  They exist to menace, intimidate and use violence against Muslims, ethnic minorities and union members, as part of a misguided belief they are "defending" Britain from "dhimmification".

That they got run off by counter-protests, lead by local Muslims and the UAF, suggests this plan of theirs isn't going too well at all.  Sure, its hardly the Battle of Cable Street, but the EDL is integral to the growth of the BNP (by causing racial polarization through provocative street actions), and if local communities unite and drive them off, then they're not going to get very far at all.

Again, I aint English, so i dunno what the rules are there about religious freedom.  That said however, Muslims exist, they proliferate and they want to come to England so the Brits need to be ready to accept them as neighbors and share the collection plates.  Is this more of an anit-immigration thing or a anti-religion thing though?  I mean I am fairly anti-immigration at this point in my life, not cause i don't want more foreigners, but because I want to put the situation on hold till the government can get some kind of immigration reform in place...yeah...like that's gonna happen.

Its got nothing to do with immigration at all.  In fact, they claim its to do with "extremism" and terrorism....but the Mosque in Harrow is about as liberal as a "Save the whales" meeting, only with better food.

Its really about Muslims being the new Jews for the nutters on the far-right, who have realised anti-Semitism doesn't sell, but Islamophobia is socially acceptable so long as you mumble some shit about extremism (which is totally different from anti-Semites in the 1920s mumbling about the Jewish-Bolshevik conspiracy, because this one is TROO) and about the BNP, the pack of Nazis behind the EDL, realising they can't get much more support without polarising race and religious relations in this country, and wanting the street presence the far-right had in the 70s, where they could intimidate and attack unionists, religious and ethnic minorities and the rest.

Oh for the love of my aunt mary's bloomers!  Must we have a whole new target race?
