Just a point, but I would prefer people actually did think before deciding to do "something" or pick a "cause".  Activity in lieu of consideration of the issues is not useful, especially if you are only doing it in order to appear to be "doing something".  Effectiveness and right cause -> frantic jumping from issue to issue to make it look like you care.

I think I tend to be the same way--not wanting to shit on someone's enthusiasm over a cause and its pursuit, though I rarely hold back if I think their efforts will end up futile.
