I agree with the last two posts ITT.

No, it's just something of a theme I am seeing.  For example, the hilarious bad slashfic of Doctor Who that was called Torchwood was marketed as a "darker and edgier" take on Doctor Who.  The equally hilariously bad Stargate: Universe was not only described as "darker and edgier" but also "cerebral".  Both were not especially complex, or morally ambiguous or shocking, but did include a lot of sexual references and scenes implying it.

I don't mind sex on teh TV, but lets at least be honest, and call it fanservice or something.

They did seem to be more economic with their use of lighting in Torchwood, perhaps that's what is meant by "darker".

yeah this whole "darker and edgier" shtick is really starting to grind. one show starts it and then they all have to follow. its like watching a formation aerobatic team all dive relentlesssly into the runway one after the other . . .

its going that way with films too. Escapism in fiction was down when the money was good. Its especially obvious in comic book films ever since the commercial success of Sin city.
Now that people aren't as well off I am hoping for and expecting a return to fantastical hope filled shows. "gritty" really becomes cliche after a while
