I think they were looking for a change from Exmouth, which I can understand, at least in principle if not in their choice of destination.

You say that like there is nothing worthwhile to do in Exmouth, like get drunk and look across the estuary at Dawlish, or get drunk and catch the train to Exeter, or....uh, get drunk at home.
