Martin Gardner, renaissance man and total genius, passed away recently. If you've read any Douglas Hofstadter, Cliff Pickover, James Randi, etc etc, you're partially familliar with him, or at least his energy. He was fascinated by everything, and was a continual font of cool ideas. He used to write the scientific american column "Mathematical Games", which Hofstadter took over in the 80s.

Yeah, it's a sad day for math geeks and puzzle fiends alike.
He's done more for the world of math awareness than almost anybody. I think I still have one of his books on stage magic too.
