Well as far as I can see, Wicca as an organised body of rituals and beliefs didnt exist until 1951, and that's only Gardnerian Wicca.  Other popular traditions followed later.  Discordianism started in 1958-9.  So not even decades.

I didn't realize Gardner waited that long to organize it.

The whole "Wicca is a continuation of an ancient tradition" thing comes from Gardner's claims that he was publicizing the practices of a coven that was following an ancient tradition.  Strikes me as unlikely since names have always been a pretty big thing for both Celts and Germanic people, so any tradition arising from them (which would be what Britain has to draw on) would be very unlikely to have an unnamed divinity at the center of their worship.
You're a special case, Babylon.  You are offensive even when you don't post.

Also that he stole a heap of stuff from Crowley, who probably wasn't Mahadquickal Advisor to the Celts and Germanic people.

There were groups dating back to the 1920s who used Magaret Murray's "research", mixed in with Theosophy, Golden Dawn, Freemason and Classical literature references and material, but...well, Murray's research was bullshit, as were the practices of these groups, in terms of corresponding to anything actually existing historically.  And Wicca derived from them, so yeah.

A nameless divinity makes a lot more sense for a stolen from Crowley approach.  Crowley's work was mostly Hebrew mysticism, as far as I can tell from what I have read of him.  Filtered through freemasonry and golden dawn and whatnot, but still basically Hebrew, and a nameless god fits right in with Judaism.

(funny to think of Wicca as an Abrahamaic religion)

Allen H Greenfield has made the case (somewhere) that Crowley was working with Gardener on Wicca before he died, and this was the new project he was attempting to unveil, an "outer chuch" to recruit more people for his AA inner circle.

Divine power made me, Wisdom supreme, and Primal love.

Without knowing more about Thelma and Crowley, I would say that sounds believable. Guess I should find some Gardnerian circle and weasel my way through the grades to find out skrits they have.

This is moo. You should give in and love the Great Bovine.

IIRC, the belief was that Crowley issued a charter for Gardener to work on the project, and while locating the document (and subsequently proving its authenticity) is difficult, the OTO wasnt in a wonderful state back then, and for an attention whore like Crowley, such a state of affairs could not be tolerated.  Especially when he could be having mahadquikcal buttsex and watching chicks dance around naked.

Stelpa

Wicca is totally ancient you guys! I mean, haven't you ever seen all the stone carvings of lonely fat goth chicks dancing around maypoles??  :lulz:

I want to systematically find all pagans that first assume something is majiqal before seeking professional help, and then fuck with their mode of transportation, their climate control for their house, their fridge, oh and infect them with ringworm.

Just make mini blair witch dolls and tie them to their front door in the morning

Basic magical error.  If you are not using all mundane means possible to maximise your chances of success then you are wasting your magical energy.

That's a bit insulting to the mentally challenged, most of them will take mundane means to ensure success.

You are right.

Retract my earlier statement equating pagans with the mentally handicapped and any implication that they are engaging in coital relations with retards.

-ahem-

Pagans that ignore mundane explanations for the events of their lives to the point that will not seek the help of trained professionals are deserving of a strong heckling, insulting and everything negative that comes with not seeking mundane help.
