There's just so much lacuna in this period it's hard to really find out what REALLY happened. The Europeans didn't write anything down that we have record of (which means the Romans or the Catholics later destroyed anything, of course.) And then Alexandria went...unggggh. Late Antiquity is so frustrating. I think that's why I like it. There are actual gaps where we really have no fucking clue what happened.

When Nerva was emperor? Doubtful. Though we lost those books anyway. Coincidence? No, not really...we're just now starting to find a lot of fragments in random places like Morocco.

He was alive during Adrianople, but I don't think he was physically there.

His account states that he was present when the Visigoths lost their shit.  He wound up floating down a river on a raft of corpses, along with the few other remaining survivors.

I'll post the name of the account in question when I get home.  It's sitting on my bookshelf next to that old fishwife Tacitus.

It was also a time when the world had gone mad, and any one individual could reliably report only a tiny fraction of the picture of even one major event.  Bad signal was everywhere, and if you didn't see it with your own eyes, you couldn't trust it.

Good thing we're not in that position today or anything.

I happen to enjoy Tacitus. He was a smooth writer, I mean, in contrast to that whiny bitch Cassius Dio who was above writing his histories in Latin.

Tacitus was a shrewish old gossip who disapproved of everything Rome ever did, unless one of his relatives was involved.  The really big contribution he made was to record the names of the knights and their families who perished under Nero's rule.

Yeah, he had a way with words, but he was hardly an unbiased source.  For that, you need Livy, who unfortunately wrote like a Canadian historian...IE, boring as fuck, and mostly talking about who grew how much and when.  He even made the Punic Wars boring, FFS.  How the hell do you do THAT?

Reading Livy is like reading stereo instructions.

The only person worse is Pliny the Younger. A 4 hour long speech at the coronation of an emperor? *snore*

Also, when narrating a volcano erupting, "HOLY FUCKING SHIT!" is really all you need to say.  Gory details are not required.
