If I may (and even if I may not!) Remember that the approximate zeitraum of the novel is 1960 ish to 70ish and so much of what was a   shocker then is now  boring  I second reading it under the influence of Herb or vitamin A   what R.A.W. and Shea are trying to do is linguistically maneuver the reader through those wild and crazy daze to provoke suspicions about Reality as perceived through our limited neurology and cultural filters.

Now that's a spoiler.

Accurate, though.

I understood what was written - but why EVIL?  Evil to me is more like John Grisham . . . or those Chicken Soup for the Soul thingies . . . or Harry Potter.

My interpretation of horab:

"evil" because it gives things away too easily.  Instead of going to the encyclopedia (or online, these days),a nd having to actually figure it out yourself, they more-or-less spoon feed you.

But that's just my interpretation.

hooplala

I don't know that I fully agree with you . . . the appendixes are not exactly light reading, and they don't really tell you a lot that wasn't already explained somewhere in the story.

I guess as I see it, Illuminatus is the encyclopedia, you just need to weed out the important shit from the farce . . . or maybe the farce is the important shit . . . or maybe the important shit is farce . . . or maybe its all important . . . or maybe its all farce.

I don't know what I'm going on about anymore.

and, at any rate, I think 'evil' is pushing it.

Eh, I think you just need to hang around Horab some more.

Anyway, it was just my interpretation.

PS - In Illuminatus!, nothing is true.

There is no conspiracy anywhere

no, no, it's definitely pulling it, but in any case, it's evil because it seemed like the thign to say at the time. tho el's interpretaton while reasonably falacious, is altogether sensiible and comes tot eh mark.

i foudn the entire book to be very light reading, including the appendices.

mind you, i could never get past the first page or 3 of the hobbit.

when you don't knwo what you are on about aymore, you are striking deep into the heart of the Mysteree.

also, in Illimunatus! everything is true.

hmm...i would like to dissagrea with u here, the lists and ramblings and choppy senes all made sence where it was, i mean, what else could be put in its place. even on its own the what the seemingly incoherentness of it made quita bit of sence if u ask me.

in regards to the validity of trueth to the story. perhaps this questioning and ambiguaty is inderectly connected to what the book talks about the information/missinformation/half trueths/half lies/ trueths/ lies/ both truth and lies. to which the sectreat society discussed is said to practice in order to get those whome are looking into the subject confuzed and all turned around, and keeping party members on a short leash on what the societys true agenda is. thus mind games of a sort

1. I understood why it was there, and the purpose it served, and before you ask, yes, I understood the dream/trip logic of it.  It's just when I got the third page of band names, I couldn't help skimming a bit.

2. The whole "nothing/everything is true" bit I, and others, occasionally do is a meta-joke, of sorts.  We get it, we're just teasing each other/the random lurker.

But everything IS true - and nothing is true . . . that's the best part about the "satire".

Every book is fiction, even text books.
