In January 2008, I began to organize OMGASM, a network which would facilitate the Discordian Society's desire to propagate large scale pranks. The Discordians, an irreligion composed of tricksters and lunatics, reject any central leadership. This makes it difficult for them to organize themselves to complete their goals. The OMGASM is my attempt to network pranksters, lunatics, and other cool people so that they can share resources for pranks and projects. I set up a registry of interested parties, and created a website and mediawiki as a repository of those people and their ideas. I created a central gathering place and through my and other's projects, created an incentive to form a community around them.

OMGASM is an acronym. OM stands for Operation Mindfuck. It is an ongoing Discordian project to challenge existing assumptions and provoke critical and creative thought. GASM stands for Golden Apple Seed Mission. It's a meme which indicates a project needs assistance. A Golden Apple Seed Mission is a project which "would be more fun for all of us if you helped out." We are using this codeword to tag different projects and make them accessable to each other via the web.

OMGASM is about largescale pranks which require a lot of participation. In the past, if you wanted to get involved in the kind of pranks which the Discordian Society enjoys, you'd have to either

• come up with the project and get all sorts of people involved
• personally know the people who were starting it

This is difficult because Discordian pranksters aren't well networked - they stick apart. There's no Discordian Vatican to say "Okay now we're all going to write to Stephen Colbert okay GO." So as a result, their influence is limited.

The information age offers us a solution - using common code words, pranksters can locate one another on the internet and share resources. For example, if you're putting together a pamphlet or book, but don't have any skill in graphic design or layout, you might be able to use the OMGASM network to find someone with the talents your project is missing.

OMGASM Projects names have GASM as a suffix. The project to put up posters all over the place is called POSTERGASM. The project to draw moustaches on movie posters is MOUSTACHEGASM. Involvement in Operation: Mindfuck isn't limited to the prankster's local area - with the right spin, one can get pranksters all over the world to help shake up the masses.

Since its conception, OMGASM has launched approximately ten projects. There about 70 participants and approximately ten people who actively create and organize projects. OMGASM missions have been carried out in the United States, Canada, England, Scottland, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, and South Africa.
