'cult' is has many of the same trappings. It seems to be generally described as a 'movement' which is a bit more vague and carrys less negative connotations.

DO NEVAR CALLED DISCORDIANISM A CULT, IT IS A LEGITAMITE RELIGION ESTABLISH BY A B-GRADE SCIENCE FICTION WRITER.
- So the New World Order does not actually exist?
- Oh it exists, and how!
Ask the slaves whose labour built the White House;
Ask the slaves of today tied down to sweatshops and brothels to escape hunger;
Ask most women, second class citizens, in a pervasive rape culture;
Ask the non-human creatures who inhabit the planet:
whales, bears, frogs, tuna, bees, slaughtered farm animals;
Ask the natives of the Americas and Australia on whose land
you live today, on whose graves your factories, farms and neighbourhoods stand;
ask any of them this, ask them if the New World Order is true;
they'll tell you plainly: the New World Order... is you!

Cult does have lots of negative connotations. But tends to also carry with it an element of the ridiculous and/or laughable. And everyone likes a good lail now and again.

I would not describe Discordianism as a cult in any serious sense, but I would just for the fun of it sometimes.

I always describe Discordianism as a cult.

I feel more honest that way (and its a subtle dig at every other cult ie; so-called established religion).

I heard that. That's why I refer to xianity and turbania as 'very successful cults'

I reserve the term "cult" for christians and use it continuously.  This is especially fun in book stores, btw (specifically christian book stores).

If anyone asks what discordianism is, I just make contradictory statements until they get hopelessly confused.
