He's basically the Tampa Bay Devil Rays of Presidents.  He's has no shot at getting into the playoffs, what's he got to lose?

HAY I LIEK TEH DEVIL RAYS! BE TO NOT BE COMPARING THEM TO EL PRESIDENTE.

And for meme sake:

FUCK YOU 4 OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS DIED ON 9/11 BECAUSE THEY WERE NYPD/FDNY. ANOTHER UNCLE OF MINE IS SEVERELY MENTALLY FUCKED UP BECAUSE BODY PARTS RAINED ON HIM FROM TOWER 2!!!

I showed my sister Loose Change the other night. She was a bit unnerved by it actually and asked me if we should trust the government and what she should actually believe. It's conspiracy theory geeking, true, but oft-times her pea-brain can't process information like that, or even acknowledges it exists. Unfortunately I woke a sleeping giant and now she's looking up all sorts of shit on the interweb about it.

Direct her my way.  I shall sort her out.

As for the "post 9/11 world" it basically means paranoia reigns supreme.  The US has done a 180 degree reversal on policy, from claiming terrorism is a minor nusiance to it being the top national security issue.  That means the US, as a matter of policy, will consider individuals as being threats to its power.  Any individual person could be a threat to US military hegemony.  That's why the reaction to terrorism is so visceral, they are literally terrified they will lose their primary position in the world.

Oh, and there is a bunch of shit about using this to solidify their military position in areas they were traditionally weak, which was the rationale for invading Iraq and cutting deals with bastards like Karimov.  Along with the possibility of some very rich people getting richer.  But the fear, the very real fear at the top of the administration, is driving all that.

Triple Zero

but are they *seriously* afraid of individuals?

why?

i mean, look at them

INFORMATION SO POWERFUL, YOU ACTUALLY NEED LESS.

Cain - so basically, they're saying that Jose Padilla, the insanely ineffective 'dirty bomber' was of a sufficient threat to bring the military/industrial complex to a screeching halt?

That's like saying that Chumbawamba were successful in dismantling capitalism by soaking John Prescott's wife with water.
What makes it so? Making it so is what makes it so.

Cain

Apparently so.  They flipped their entire worldview, and no-one is as fanatical as the convert.

Besides, economically speaking, they are right.  A single dirty bomb in downtown Manhatten will cost trillions on the economy.  Someone has to foot the bill, and god knows there are enough people who dislike the government enough to make any terrorism an economic nightmare.

Mangrove

Not that I can recall the source, but I did hear something along the lines that the US Military investigated the use of 'dirty bombs' and concluded that they would be reliable & ineffective owing to the fact that the amount of radioactive material coupled with rate of dispersion would make it unlikely that you could successfully contaminate enough people to have any real, lasting damage. (The 'thought' of the dirty bomb seems more pragmatic than it's actual effects.)

Thus, they decided not to use or employ them. If that's true (and I really cannot say if it is or not) then what's happening is:

Dirty bombs don't work.....unless they're used by Islamic terrorists, in which case, they are extremely effective.
What makes it so? Making it so is what makes it so.

However, as can be easily shown every time someone proposes to build a nuclear power plant...

The actual physical effects of anything dealing with radiation have nothing to do with the immense reaction people have to the word "radiation".

Cain

Oh, a pistol is most certainly more dangerous that a dirty bomb* if you intend to kill people, but killing people isn't really the point anymore.  That's just advertising, getting the name of the group in the press.  Any idiot can kill someone.  It's all about the economic damage and panic nowadays.  A dirty bomb may kill twenty people, if it detonates in a public place, but the cleanup will take months.  There will be mass panic, many major financial and business headquarters will have to shut down....and thats what you really want.

*Not to be confused with a Dirrty Bomb, which is something else entirely.

Was it that Xtina album?

Payne

Chaps. Wrestling. Singing many different notes when will do.

Imagine the carnage if a Dirrty bomb went off?

I kinda like that "nasty slut" look, sometimes.

Cain

Xtina would likely get it regardless of how she is dressed, truth be told.

LMNO

Actually, I like the "sophisticated 40's tramp" looks she's rocking these days, too.

Next week is year 6 of our allegedly 'Post 9/11' world. A phrase I particularly hate and find extremely mystifying and pointless.

So this is a heads up. For next week will be neck deep in the sublime and the ridiculous....but mostly the ridiculous. Sublime is generally a thin veneer in my experience.

Make a rage noise here.

Mang'.

Ook ook.
