Got a friend into Hip Hop. He's been listening to Jay Z and was all wow look at his new vid. It's full of occult references and shit to do with freemasons..etc

He basically said, look Jay Z is in the Illuminati or some shit based off an article on this site http://vigilantcitizen.com.

I basically was saying to him, the guy is a narcissist and thinks he's the shit, as is the attitude of every Hip Hop artist. Why wouldn't he want to make himself out to be some sort of major head in the international conspiracy/new world order?

Anyone ever hang out on this site.

Here's a link to the particular blog entry.

Jay Z is one of the biggest heaps of crap to ever call himself "hip hop".
He has no idea what music is.
Ask him any question about music theory and he'd be like;
UHHHHH WHARRT I DUN GEDDIT.

I think the standards you have set for your definition of "music" are narrow and unyeilding.  Son House wouldn't be able to answer a question about music theory, either.

At least he was a good musician and guitarist.

"Moving the Goalposts" is an invalid form of argument.  Also, it ignores Jay Z's talent for synchopation, rhyme, and wordplay.

We now return you to the Jay Z song already in progress.

It also ignores that Jay-Z is leading the anti-Autotune revolution.

Autotune is only to be used to make fun of politicians on Youtube.  Jay-Z, as opposed to some artists, understands this.

I listen to actual music, such as The Beatles

You know, bands who know what music actually is.

1) FAIL. The Beatles were absolutely horrible.

2) doubleFAIL. Music is whatever noise the person listening to it decides is music.

and really? you think hip-hop artists aren't valid if they don't have a working grasp of musical theory? that's pretty laughable, given that there is really no place in the structure of hip-hop for needing to care about modes.

also, people who think music has to contain live instrumentation are, well, pretty fucking willfully ignorant about the nature of music.

Uh... .I don't listen to ICP.
I listen to actual music, such as The Beatles, Deep Purple, The Kinks, pretty much any 60's music and Classical.
You know, bands who know what music actually is.

Wait.  So your personal taste dictates what is and is not real music?

Actually, the only fail would be anyone who says The Beatles are "horrible". Anyone who considers The Beatles horrible obviously has something very very wrong with them. Even if it isn't your type of music, you cannot deny their musical talent. That is ultimate fail.

What's more, is I never once said that a rapper couldn't be musical. I'm just saying that Jay-Z is most definitelly not one of them.

A lot of people have asked me that, and the fact is no... There are many bands out there I don't like but can still see them as muscians. But let's face facts... the 1960's was the best decade for music - everything was good, as everyone learnt music the proper way. Going to music lessons, music schools, and learning how to play instruments.

No, sorry. A musician doesn't have to know how to play or sight read - but live instruments do make music better than a digital track programmed into a computer. Computer prgorammed music is boring and predictable. Live music is unique. No computer will ever top that. I should also add, that computers are often used to edit out peoples bad vocals or playing, cut and paste in attempts to make the so called "artist" sound better than they are.

Please don't be a moron. Jay-Z has no talent, so why bother defending something like that. He's just an idiot that got lucky. Apart from that, lyrical talent isn't musical talent. So he has no right to call himself music.

The entire Nuggets back catalog would disagree.

Hell, Harrison couldn't even play the simple solo on while my guitar gently weeps and had to bring in Clapton to play it.  Sir George Henry Martin did more to influence the sound of the Beatles than any member of the band did.

That is just a horrible thing to say. While My Guitar Gently Weeps being one of the greatest songs ever written, it's close to sacriledge.
