There was another census thread around but I'm too lazy to continue to look for it so I'm posting this here just for shits and grins.

The census is not kept private. All info becomes public after 70 years.

Ok-that is all.

Old news. But by that point so do copyrights, so whatever.

72. At that point, the information is pretty much useless (unless you're geneaology diving), because who's life stays exactly the same for 72 years? For fuck's sake, shut the fuck up, and cooperate you (generalized, not YOU specifically) iggerant fucktards. Goddammit.

LMNO

Holy shit!  You mean in 70 years, people will know I'm a white male who used to live in Boston?

:omg:

yeah.
we should have totally moved forward from such a rudimentary Census.
i vote that there should be a field at the end called 'Tweet the Future ™'  where you can put up to 140 chars of whatever drivel you want on it.
(it would be called that so that twitter could sponsor the effort in order to defray the cost.  also, to make us look further like idiots to descendants 70 years from now.)

Thing is, in 72 years my grandchildren will have their parent's place of where they grew up be public.
It's a matter of principle. The census folks keep saying everything is kept private. Well-bullshit it is not.

Write a letter.

If it wasn't for the address listing, I wouldn't have been able to find my grandmother in the 1930 census since they misspelled her name. I was  then able to trace it back to when her parents got off the boat. Thanks to the census listings in 2 countries, I traced my grandfather's line back to England in the 1200s. And I still had to PAY for it on Ancestry.com

I mean, you have to be a HARDCORE stalker or more simply, a determined geneaologist to really want to go through the records to find who you want to. And 72 years later, who the fuck will care? What you're doing is exhibiting the embedded fear that people are getting now through all the privacy and terrorism bullshit. Knock it off. I'd be more worried about something you copyrighted being ripped off 72 years after your death than the odds of someone stalking your grandchildren through the 2010 Census.

Bleh-I disagree and I will not knock it off here on the forums but I will continue to call bullshit on the census IRL.

Write a letter. Let them know that you think their rules should change for the first time since the 1800s.

but make sure not to put a return address on it.
or they'll know!

Suu

As a matter of fact, stop putting a return address on mail AT ALL. I mean, it's just the government keeping track of you anyway, right? Regardless of if your mail needs to be returned. Fight the power, man!

Adios

What is the population of the US now anyway? I didn't return the census so they came to my door to ask me the questions. Actually they did our entire neighborhood because the government had the addresses all wrong. I told them I was Cherokee and Mrs. Hawk was Blackfeet. Then there was my last name change that wasn't discussed at all. So in 72 years if anybody cares enough they can go figure that shit out.

Suu

Yeah, the main purpose of the Census is to count everyone, get a snapshot of the demographics in your neighborhood, and that's about it. You can waive any question you want as well.

better yet, put whatever you want on the destination address, put the destination on the return address, and leave off the stamp.
stick it to the man!

Personally, I think that census workers should be flown to people's homes in black helicopters. I don't care that it would be an exorbitant waste of money. The lulz, think of the lulz.
