Thinking about trying to become a cop.  Sick to death of working sparse hours, shitty wages, no benefits, and no sense of accomplishing anything.

Thoughts?

Hrmm... My general dislike of cops makes me want to say no, but it could turn out to be pretty interesting, I  s'pose. I could use a bit more input. Is this something you've been considering for a while? Have you worked in security or another related feild?

Nope, totally new idea.  It came to me when I was looking at this month's timesheet.  I realized that I'm not making even enough money to subsist, and my job sticks it's ass into every possible place I could put a social life, and it won't even cover my college costs.  Pretty disgruntled with it all.

I don't know anyone in law enforcement, but I think you've got a certain patience and sharp wits that would serve you well as a cop.

ETA: and a good sense of humor. That seems critical.

I do tend to laugh and joke as a stress response.

Well, this year's enrollment is passed, but I don't really have the qualifications to go straight into the force yet anyway.  Looks like a 5-month academy, and 2 years as a reserve officer.  Not 100% on what one of those are yet, still researching.

ETA:  And I have to get my AS wrapped up, was planning on doing that anyhow.

Just the stolen ones.

Alternatively, you could resist arrest. :)

What about security? I worked for a company in Seattle, it was a nice gig. Graveyard, learned how to play the ukulele. Decent pay too. Plus, substantially less chance of being shot.

As for being a cop, if you can handle it I bet it would be fun in a horrormirthy sort of way. I would not be able to handle it.

I just imagine your enviroment as a law enforcment agent becoming oppressive and uncomfortable.

Right now I clean toilets for pocket change.  I'm honestly not too worried about bureaucratic bullshit cramping my style.

Decent pay, time outdoors, more than average (for American) vacation time, health benefits...  Probably cheap to practice my shooting, too.

If I can get a schedule that lets me pursue a degree in cog-neurosci in the meantime, it's the perfect gig.  But I'd settle for a chance to put some money aside for school later, too.

Besides.  It doesn't have to be fun to be fun, eh Alty? ;)

THAT'S GODDAMNED RIGHT!

ETA: And anyway, where better to spread discord?

By imposing order.  :)

Really, cops are better discordians than anyone else.

Also, I like to think maybe I'd be able to help people while I'm at it.

knew a bunch of cops, theres even a cop org that supports marijuana legalization (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) most of em were just older jocks, if ya liked jocks in H.S. you'll fit in fine. course these guys all had scary as hell stories to tell every time I met up with em, I wouldent wanna do it. for the record... sheriff's get paid more and have better retirement benifits generally, same with highway patrol but HP has a higher rate of injury/death and suicide (no idea why) but has the strongest union in the nation... they never have their pay cut (think thats because when clinton threatened to cut their pay, the officers stopped writing tickets and hit em in the pocket book)
