I like the party analogy, cause I dislike the "lurk more" saying. I find it kind of insulting to noobs.

When you are invited to a party of people you don't know yet, or even a school club (since there is already a bounding interest here) you don't lurk around like a creep, but you don't jump right in - unless you have one of those personalities that everyone loves you in matter of minutes. You basically just jump in when you can, take it a little slow at first, have a little fun when you can, and if some established meme is over your head you ask questions or back out of the conversation for a bit.
