I wouldn't be surprised if all the other sightings are unrelated Lo5 stuff, indeed. However, I'm still really curious about what really caused the Arkansas incident, 5000 is quite a lot, and the explanations offered so far either don't fit the facts (fireworks), or are kind of out-there.

The pole shifting doomsayers are completely nuts.  Loss of the magnetic field would pose no radiological danger whatsoever to human life.  The entirety of the disaster would be limited to not being able to use compasses, or needing new maps since they all point in the wrong direction.  Oh and astronauts that rely on the magnetic field (they don't have ~100 kilometers of air to shield them) would need to adjust their orbit to deal with the shift before the next solar flare.

The magnetic field isn't "changing". The magnetic poles are continuing to shift, just as they have done forever. The shift is accelerating, which may or may not mean that they will reverse soon. No one knows what'll happen then, but the magnetic field will still be there as usual, and the magnetosphere will continue protecting the surface from radiation just as it's done for the last, oh, 3 billion years.
