I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest wanking to a sigil.  I've always read it as wanking, and then at the right moment looking at the sigil.  Was that just me?

That's always why I find it so funny. If someone is just jerking off to a sigil, they're not doing anything I've read about. Even if someone is doing 'sigil magick' (read self inflicted memetic symbols) wanking is just one possible option, along with laughing for a solid five minutes, meditation, ritual etc etc etc... its just a way to 'slight of mind' yourself. But I don't come to PD.com for reasoned discussions based on facts, evidence or actual ideas... madijickal strawmen are so much more fun!!

Reason is a continuous and fragile process. It doesn't mix well. You start at "axiom" and end at "Hypothesis". You don't start with "magick", borrow a lot of concepts, and end with superficially plausable bare assertion. (As an aside, that process is exactly how you write decent Science Fiction). Liber Kaos and shit like that is useful only insofar as you can put it on the small shelf in the bathroom for when you're running low on toilet paper, and you already wiped on your standby copies of that Jehovah's Witness tract with the doofy lion and editions of "Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology".

You're missing the point...which is apparently only Ratatosk can ever discuss magic(k) in a reasonable way.

At least I only hallucinate pixies when I choose to.  :lulz:

Trolling the 'wick is hilariously justified because the entire concept of "reasoned discussion of magick" is a contradiction in terms. If you believe you can cast spells, you have explicitly rejected empiricism and reason is a borrowed concept.

Who said reason had anything to do with it?

If I am doing something that requires reason, I don't use magic (or magick)... I use reason. If I'm concerned about understanding an observable, repeatable process, I'll use the scientific method. If I'm writing php code, I'll use logic...

If I'm playing with magick, I'll use magick.

Nah, anyone can, if they bother to investigate the topic. Its just obvious when people talk about it and they haven't. Just as I'm sure that anything I wrote on International Politics would sound like idiotic ramblings to you. I could talk about it intelligently, but only if I studied it, or investigated it deeply.

That being said, I will argue that my view of magick is probably more reasonable than a lot of the pro-magick crowd. However, I'm not alone in that, there are several people on this board that are as reasonable if not moreso in their views on the subject.

I agree with this 100%. If a person believes that they can cast a spell on someone, throw fireballs from their belly, communicate with the dead, communicate with psychic powers over thousands of miles (or from the next room)... they're doin it wrong. Not only are they doin it wrong, but they're falling for Crowley's mindfucks hook, line and sinker.

ITT Arguing over the typeface of the newspaper.
Not really, you started a rant on magick and the negative shit we have seen of it and as with the threads that have come before people are discussing it. I would have thought you would have expected this really. Someone should write a rant about how we make basically the same arguments on this every time it comes up.
