normally in a one-on-one talk, some people might consider fact-checking and peeking in an encyclopedia to see if you're right before opening your mouth as "cheating" (at least, I can imagine some might).

In a one-to-many discussion, NOT making a reasonable effort to fact-check what you say is even correct (which might include using wikipedia or google), is considered WASTING EVERYBODY'S FUCKING TIME.

why?

Well, if you fact-check before you post, it costs you, what? Say 30 seconds to five minutes of your time. Divide that by the size of your audience (say, 50 unique people on PD?), and I'd say that's definitely worth the effort.

Now consider if you just write down whatever you think is right or are not entirely sure but post it anyway without "cheating"/fact-checking. Now the audience has to fact-check for themselves. Congratulations, you just caused others 50 times the effort you would have otherwise spent yourself.

That is why fact-checking before you post is not considered "cheating", but common fucking courtesy.

If you think I'm being condescending now, think again, because I'm not, I'm pissed off. This is not something new or computer/internet related, you also don't need to be smart in order to do it, just not lazy. If somebody is giving a speech IRL to a 50+ audience, you'd expect him to checked his facts before opening his mouth right? You'd be pissed off if you'd find out later he'd been talking to a big audience without at least spending a bit of effort to check what he said is even correct, right?

This is the sort of shit that we slap people on Wicca forums around for. We're supposed to be BETTER than that, not because anybody is really much SMARTER or more educated or whatever (giving Dead Kennedy the benefit of the doubt shows just smartness gets you nowhere), but because if there's one thing we can all sort of agree about in this little island of Discord, it is that using your brain to THINK is a GOOD THING.

BTW one kind of fact-checking that is actually even less effort than using google or wikipedia, is to check the fucking DATE on an article before you link to it. Yet another one of those tiny common courtesy thingies that, you know, would cost you like 5 seconds before posting to prevent 50+ people wasting an enormous amount of time (taking the article seriously, getting upset about it, checking the date, finding out it's more than 5 years old, slapping their foreheads, trying to come up with a nice way to mention this, etc etc).



I'm trying to think. It's not very nice what I wrote here. But honestly, unless I completely misunderstand what you're saying here, I have all the right to be pissed off.
