We're a nation of laws. We don't let individuals make their own decisions about how the laws operate. He broke the law.

Note: The White House is now complaining that Obama's comments were taken entirely the wrong way by nasty-minded media peoples, and that:

"making a general statement that did not go specifically to the charges against Manning: 'The president was emphasizing that, in general, the unauthorized release of classified information is not a lawful act,' [a White House spokesman said] Friday night. 'He was not expressing a view as to the guilt or innocence of Pfc. Manning specifically'."

Or, he said with absolute clarity "he broke the law".  Which has some hilarious legal implications, such as throwing the possibility of any kind of fair trial into the realms of fantasy.  Not that this will stop a prosecution, mind.

I dont think its that he preemptively condemned him. What I think happened is that he already knows the result of MAnnings "Trial" and he spoiled the ending for everyone.

Manning's going to be treated no differently than any of the innocent people picked up by the government in the War on Civil Rights Terror and held for years without being charged with anything. They'll do everything they can to avoid actually trying him for as long as possible so they can keep him out of sight/mind of the public, and then they'll railroad him in some military circus act whenever they get around to it.
