Just as amateurs in the fields of warfare talk about tactics instead of logistics, amateurs in the field of what-the-fuckery-is-going-on talk about politics instead of geopolitics.

(Note: this is not a slight on anyone here.  Except in the same very vague way it is a slight on everyone who doesn't talk about geopolitics).

This is also a reminder to me, to not get myself so involved in day to day party politics (it is fun, but distracting).

As for geopolitics: note where important resources are (oil and gas, coltan, lithium, bauxite, uranium, copper and so on), note where major ports and trade routes are, note where pipelines go to (and who controls them) and where ethnic groups are located.

For starters.  There is also things like FOBs, major embassy installations, weapon systems, food production and general geographic location, which can be important.  As can cultural affinity, religious affiliation and so on.  Never forget demographics, either.

I'm a "all politics is local" kind of guy.  Mostly because I have to because of my work.  Doesn't leave me a lot of time for geopolitics.  But there are certain story lines that I like to keep up to date on.  Particularly the Balkan stuff.  Bosnia war hit during my college days and I did some studying on that topic for various classes.

I have no choice but to follow geopolitics.  It's what's going on in my house almost 24/7.  Be that as it may, I would follow it anyway.  It's fascinating to me, and I wish had more time to spend on it more in depth. 

What I find even more fascinating is how interconnected global trends are with local.  THAT SHIT is amazing.  So even if you think you're just getting a handle on the local stuff near you, chances are you are actually also discovering quite a bit about the world at large/aka geopolitics.
