This mod alone makes Skyrim the most profound contribution to culture in the past ten years at least: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bifmj1O3D24

So I'm level 54. I'm trying to do all the plot I can. I hit the barrier where stuff wasn't challenging anymore, so I jacked the difficulty up to Master. Suddenly there were ancient dragons and four Deathlords assaulting me at once. The game was hard again!

This lasted for five levels or so, now I'm acclimated to that level of danger. It's still hard, but I'm used to it. So at this point, in order to level, I need to start using skills I've previously ignored. My mage is now wearing plate mail and swinging a battle axe. It takes a long time to kill a dragon when your Two Handed skill is like 15%!

I'm so impressed that I'm still seeing new content, still finding fresh things to do, even 100+ hours into the game.

but it'd kill the competition and probably sweep the board for industry awards.

Until the major companies put pressure on the critics to only award and promote the next twitch happy MW remake, because those have higher sales numbers. And are only what the real video gamer demographic play, at least until the next Madden comes out. And PC gaming is a dying market.

I really fucking hate the gaming industry. I hate the blogs that fire writers for posting negative reviews more.

Uh no, but thanks for playing.

You either missed the tongue in cheek with the madden comments, or continued it with a statement that farmville players should be consider gamers.

I haven't slept yet and I'm not sure which.
We appear to be doomed by our DNA to repeat the same destructive behaviors our forebears have repeated for millenia. If anything our problem solving skills have actually diminished with the advent of technology & our ubiquitous modern conveniences. & yet despite our predisposition towards fear-driven hostility; towards what we anachronistically term primitive behavior another instinct is just as firmly encoded in our make-up. We are capable as our ancestors were of incredible breathtaking acts of kindness. Every hour of every day a man risks his life at a moments notice to save another. Forget for a moment the belligerent benevolent billionaires who grant the unfortunate a crumb of costfree cake. I speak of pure acts of selflessness. A Mother who rushes into the street to save a child from a speeding vehicle. A person who runs into a burning building to reach a family trapped on the upper story. Such actions, such moments, such unconscious selfless decisions, define what it is to be human

Don't start a new game on Master. You will cry.

I've never played it at all, and I'm already crying like I'd just taken a cock to the eye.

I'm level 50-odd myself now, too. Main quest is done. I ended up siding with the nazi's, given that I still had a bug in my ass over the whole - wanting to lop my head off for the hell of it - thing the imperials had going on at the start so the whole of Skyrim is now whitey-only and I can (in fact I'm expected to) attack imperials on sight, without getting into trouble, which I can't see getting old anytime soon.

I'm the head of the mages, the companions, the dark brotherhood, some weird tribe of cannibal fucks who, frankly, creep me out a bit - the ring is stashed in my house in whiterun and I refuse to touch the fucking thing.

I reached the dragon armour smithing perk and can, coupled with my ninja enchanting skillz, make a single chestplate that single handeldy wipes out the whole 4k bank balance of any fence (oh, yeah, I'm head of the thieves guild too)

Nowadays the only thing I'm ever looking for in a chest is a key or a quest item. Daedric warhammer of 500 frost damage, worth 8000gold? Fuck that - I don't use warhammers at the mo and, when I'll do I'll be using a hancrafted "fucking epic" daedric warhammer of 5000 frost damage, worth more gold pieces than can fit in the information panel, cos that's how just how I roll.

Nothing is about money anymore it's all about skill perks from herein. Well, that and clearing out every last one of those epic locations

Skyrim is still thriving in the year 2012 and Belethor's distant cousin Gregethor is running the shop with Digurd, Sigurd's distant relative.

Buckets still get put on heads and coin purses still get thieved, and throwing fire and ice at each other is still the preferred way of settling a dispute.

World building, basically.  Oblivion was standard fantasty cliche-land - very beautifully rendered, ...

Thanks, Cain...now I have a whole heap of angles in terms of gaming to think about...

Also I think I need to check out this Planescape: Torment now...

I crashed my computer trying to mod Skyrim.

Elder Iptuous

goddammit!
i'm doing the mage college quest where you gotta focus the oculary (sp?) and it's all fucked up.
you gotta heat or cool the lenses with flame or frostbite spells, but when i do, it makes the beams go way too far in either direction to be able to focus them.  so i go online to see what others have done, and it seems that everyone else is having problem getting them to move enough. FUCK.  stupid quest....

also, i've spent more time doing skills than the quests, i guess, because i've got badass gear that lets me breeze through the quests now at level 40.
i did a quest for a goddess, Miridia (sp again?), and she's all, "You are worthy now, mortal, to weild this epic fucking sword that i shall birth to you from this ball of pure energy in the sky, and you shall spread my religion amongst the land!"
'oh... um. thanks lady. but, i think i'll stick with the two swords i made that do three times as much dmg and are much more heavily enchanted than this.  but, it'll totally look nice on my weapon rack back at home!  and i'll mention you when i'm talking to people, maybe, if it comes up in conversation....  i gotta go now.'

Hah! My roommate spent like an hour figuring this out on Friday.

Each point of fire or ice damage moves the lens a little bit in one direction or the other. So don't use the "bolt" spells, they do too much damage. Use the really low damage laser spells you can get from the tomes in the room.

Elder Iptuous

i am!  i don't even have terribly high destruction skill, and even if i did, that wouldn't increase the dmg, would it?
also, i can't move an individual beam.
even if i hit the oculary with heat/chill at the very bottom of the supporting strut, it moves all three beams way up, or way down...
i messed with it for about an hour, and gave up.  went and did some other questing. :(

Don Coyote

Randomly press the buttons, then nuke them with your frostbite or flames spell. I got it just by being stupid and doing that. I think the trouble is that it seems like a clever puzzle.

Elder Iptuous

i will try randomly nuking it as suggested. perhaps involving vodka into the equation, for good measure.
yeah.  it seems like a clever puzzle.  like playing with a wooden labyrinth that has fucked knobs....
