Funny run of holy fucking upheaval has left me off PD for the last couple of weeks. Lost my job, daughter's mom got a job offer out of town which she's taking. Had to weigh my options in light of all this. Given that I'm going to be a couple thousand miles from one child and to some degree, rebuilding, for reasons I'm not going to get to deep into, I've decided to follow my daughter...to SOregon. They're moving to Corvallis, so my options are Corvallis, Eugene or Portland. I know there's at least a few of you very familiar with the area...any suggestions?

I applaud your decision to be close to your kid!

I'm a PDXspag and I really love it here. It's a bit cheaper to live down south a bit, but Corvallis and Eugene are university towns so they're not a lot cheaper. You can still get rents in the Central Valley pretty cheap, but there is nothing there, culturally speaking, so you'll probably be happiest in Portland.

You can still get a place for a decent price in St. Johns or off MLK in NE. Avoid the West side if you can... it's douches and yuppies all over the place. The Eastside is chock full of fun things to do!

Portland.  If you want to get shot by cops for no reason, jacked, stalked by creepy people from OKC, and/or drive off a bridge for no fucking reason, Portland.

Portland is cool... Corvallis is a college town (OSU) from which I live 10 miles away and a bit expensive, and Eugene is the southernmost city. Eugene is more laid back and there's a lot of stoners and the U of O campus as well. If they're moving to Corvallis, it's only about a 70-90 minute drive from Portland. Also, what Nigel said.

As great as Portland is, I would want to live as close as possible to my daughter, hands down. When I've saved enough money, I'm returning to the Bay Area for the same reason.

I have no useful information about Corvallis or Eugene but I can tell you that driving there and back from Portland can be tremendously irritating.

That would be ideal, but a few quick perusals of Craig's List reveals an employment situation that may make Corvallis or Eugene somewhat untenable. The plan, if all goes accordingly, is to swap the car for a van and have a sub-home situation. I hear there's tons of places to set up camp around Corvallis. My daughter and her Mom are stopped for the night in Northern California, and arrive tomorrow.
