BREAKING NEWS: GERMANS UNABLE TO ENJOY LIFE

QuoteAt a certain point, Sven just lost it. Other members of the discussion group had gone into great detail about how they spent their after-work hours with their companions and enjoyed the end of the day. "That's great for you!" Sven fired back to one speaker. "But first one needs the chance! My boss often plops something on my desk right before it's time to clock out, and when I arrive home late, my wife is pissed off because she was forced to take care of our kid and the housekeeping by herself." By that point, he adds, all thoughts of a relaxing evening have vanished.

If anything can comfort Sven, it's the fact that he isn't alone with this problem. The 36-year-old took part in a study released this week by Rheingold, a market-research and consultancy institute based in Cologne, which found that 46 percent of Germans say they are increasingly unable to enjoy anything due to the stress of everyday life and the feeling of being constantly reachable. The difficulty was even more pronounced among the study's younger participants, 55 percent of whom claimed to feel they have lost their ability to feel good.

Whether it's with food, alcohol, vacation or relaxing -- Germans apparently don't have the leisure to enjoy things. In fact, they can't even let go when they're having sex. According to the researchers, the bottom line is: "Our joy gene is increasingly defective -- we've forgotten how to enjoy ourselves."

"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

You read that "Economic cold war" gibberish that Greek PM candidate was spouting?

"We're just gonna keep spending.  Germany will pay for it."

From Tspiras?

Looks like what he was saying to me is "let's negotiate, for once, instead of Germany passing down diktats and Greece being made to follow them", because if this gets into a pissing match, both sides have options, as negative as they are in the long-term for everyone.  Germany could devalue the Euro, it would solve a lot of problems in the Eurozone periphery if this was the case.  But this would have a knock-on effect on the German economy....Germany would rather rule in economic hell, than have to accept a comparatively weaker position in a stronger Europe.  Which would steal the joy from German life even more

Besides, it's not like endless rounds of austerity are actually meaning the Germans will get their money back.  The Greek economy shrinks after every single round of cuts.  5%, year on year.  The only thing the Germans are refusing to have cut in Greece is the military...which gets an extra 1.2% of the GDP spent on it, in comparison to other EU countries, and is four times the size of the British military as a proportion of the overall population.  The reason for this is that the Greek army is the largest importer of weapons in Europe, and those weapons come from....Germany.  The German arms industry lobbies the German government because losing out on lucrative weapons deals would also steal the joy from their life.

Seems like an overgeneralization to start talking about the genetics of "Germans".
In my little corner of Germany (in a big city in the former East) a lot of people have a lot of fun... Probably more people are miserable but it seems to be that way in most places I've been.
Just yesterday, me and the g/f popped out to hang out on this bridge in the park where a lot of hanging out takes place whenever it's warm, and were then steered off course by a weird hippie party with a few dozen people, basically just in the middle of the park, minutes away from the city center...
This kind of stuff happens here every day...

Not that Germany isn't ridiculously oppressive and repressive. It is. But that's a matter of institutions and culture, which are a matter of history...

BTW, I'm just skipping hirley's posts because they seem hard to parse... That's what everyone does, right?

(And yeah, I'm here again, keep yer pance on.)
Unless stated otherwise, feel free to copy or reproduce any text I post anywhere and any way you like. I will never throw a hissy-fit over it, promise.
