IMO, they were one of the cornerstones of the whole alternative/college rock scene.  (by which I'm referring to the broader scene, not just "grungr"). The other two bands being REM and Sonic Youth.


Frank Black, Black Francis, Charles Thompson, whatever you want to call him, is an unmitigated Rock genius.  He's one of those guys you can tell just effortlessly oozes music.  Teenager pf the Year, for me, was one of the best rock albums of the 90s.
