Title: What is wisdom?
Post by: Jasper on June 04, 2007, 03:43:33 AM
Something BMW just posted elsewhere:

QuoteFrom an Editorial in American Laboratory magazine

Wise people are characterized by:

-patience and the exercise of restraint

-being open minded while always staying teachable

-sensitive--unbiased and fair, while constantly maintaining a multidimensional perspective on the human experience

-visionary--always approaching life from a proactive and holistic point of view

-perceptive--adept at using good judgement to resolve problems in win-win ways that are not self serving

-always attentive, observant and shrewd enough to ask the right questions

-introspective and insightful

-leads a virtuous life

-properly prioritizes--knows whats worth doing and whats not, and likewise what cannot or should not be done and what can and should (like realizing people can only change themselves)

-foresight--the ability to anticipate and prevent rather than just reacting

-Moderation

-nothing to prove--not control freaks, are humble self confident and sincere, as well as genuine.

--stays true to their principles.

-the ability to think outside the box

I like the inclusion of "leads a virtuous life" snuck in there. That one is so incredibly subjective. Who makes the decisions about whether or not a life is virtuous? And what does virtue have to do with wisdom?

I think it doesn't matter what your virtues are, so long as you follow them.

Virtue is almost synonymous with wisdom, unless you're a "Bobby", in which case you're supposed to confuse wisdom and folly.  There's a lot of "Bobbers" in this world.  I think they're kinda funny, but they're also idiots.

I am willing to subscribe to this newsletter of thought.

I tend to have too much of a knee-jerk reaction upon seeing the word "virtue," which is something I should avoid. Knee-jerk reactions ftl

Buncha crap.

Wisdom is knowing when to punch a fucker, and when to wait for a better time.

That is all.

Wisdom is knowing how to pretend to be TGRR's friend before you convince him that you'd be worthwhile visiting and waiting until he has his back turned before you stab him for being a cop.

I would change the second line to read:  "Wise people can be characterized by:"

Because one could argue that someone who has "wisdom" has some of those traits.
But as TGRR points out, there are other options for wisdom.
In the end, defining wisdom is like defining peace as we saw in another thread.

Wisdom: a method whereby old people can pass off bullshit anecdotes and untested (and usually banal) thoughts about life without it being critically examined.

Anyone who tells you anything else is a liar, an idiot or both.

1) This wasn't about wisdom, this was about the characteristics that are found in wise people.

2) I found it interesting, but knew it wouldn't be appreciated here, which is why I didn't post it. I gave Felix permission to cross post because he took an interest in it as well.

Just remembered a time I was working at a convenience store.  This cop came in and walked up to the counter with two cases of beer and stood in line.  He then looked at his shirt and said "oh shit I'm in uniform" and put the beer back.  He then asked me if we had banana rolling papers.  After saying no, he laughed and asked for a "bag...I mean pack" of cigarettes.  I was stoned off my ass at the time, mind you....

Off topic?  or wisdom in action?

Maybe that's why Discordians aren't really known for doing stuff.

I guess all that shit I fucked up while on duty means nothing, etc.

Or maybe he means we should brag about the shit we do, thus violating the KYFMS rule, and setting ourselves up for a fun chat with people that dress like I do.

Just so we can fit HIS view of what a REALLY REAL Discordian should be doing.

I believe you, but can I ask what?

Many people come here, see what's goin' on, and ask "So, what do I do?

Many times forum members will say "figure it out for yourself," but that's also a fantastically sneaky way of saying "I don't know."

Not everyone can (or rather should) make Podcast.

Ahh, it's all making sense now.

Cow Ass, you aren't a legal adult in the Land Of A Thousand Dances until you've gone off to the desert by yourself, ingested a pound of mescaline and written a hundred and seventy-seven emo poems about a girl who didn't even know your name.

By your writing I would judge you at about 30 poems, tops . . . you've got a ways to go still until you can sit at the big kids table at Thanksgiving.

Not this geek.  He only comes by once every couple of weeks or so, tells us all how to be REALLY REAL Discordians (which seems to be about hating Black people), then leaves.

He doesn't burn out, but he won't go away, either.  It's like having dog shit on the bottom of your shoe.  Scrap all you like, the stench remains.

For every 10-15 good posters, we get someone like AKK or CowAss.

Wtf are you talking about. I wasn't the one who drove this thread into the ground. It didn't start off that bad until you spammed the hell out of it after I made a comment that wasn't even that offensive, stop taking me so seriously. I bust the board's balls and make a joke about the peps that just talk here for fun and you had to turn into this a bitch fest about absolutely nothing. How come you try and call me out any opportunity you get, even if it interferes with or completely destroys any thread that's progressing at the time? Felix had a good thread going until you hijacked the shit out of it. I made a jackass joke that I still think is pretty funny, deal with it. Cain gave his 2 cents and left it at that, mature and effective. The only person at this time fucking with the flow of creative thought is you, Rog.

Maybe that's why Discordians aren't really known for doing stuff.

Speak for yourself, asshole.  I'm off doing plenty of stuff.

Get your facts straight before running your mouth off.  Again.

I believe you, but can I ask what?

Many people come here, see what's goin' on, and ask "So, what do I do?

Many times forum members will say "figure it out for yourself," but that's also a fantastically sneaky way of saying "I don't know."

Not everyone can (or rather should) make Podcast.

1. What I work as, or what I do O:MFwise?  Former is easy.  I work at a think tank funded by a very well known group of industrialists and ex heads of state, with good links to the FBI and MI5, among the more 'open' policy creation departments, such as State, the UK Home Office (now Security and Policing).  Officially I'm charged with ways of defending the Empire's greatest asset, black gold, from the smudgy people it really belongs to.  However, I am often contracted out for other related work.

The latter though, you can get stuffed.  I ain't breathing a word.  I do lots of other stuff, involving weedkiller to paranoids worried about electricity lines, but thats purely out of work time and for my own amusement.

2. And we tell them what to check out and read.

3. Or it means "figure it out for yourself".  This isn't the Army.  If you want to take orders all day and cause chaos, go work at the Pentagon.  Once I start telling someone, who I don't know and whose circumstances differ from mine what is best for them, then I am no better than a Gray.  I thought you would have at least realized that by now.

4. No-one, bar you, suggested they should, you little creep.

yup. i know some guys who do graffiti. they ask me for easily disposable media that fit in digital cameras, cause they still wanna upload their works anonymously to some gfti sites, but if they get caught, their houses get searched and any photo they have of any piece they may or may not have done is considered incriminating evidence.

apparently stickering is most illegal, at least unless it's for something commercial. srsly, you can plaster half the town with posters for some big hardcore techno party, which is still "not allowed" if you do it outside designated places, but at least the police won't come hunting you down with/like dogs the way they'll do if it's "just art".

police and technical research teams spend at least as much time investigating graffiti "criminals" as they do going after rapists.

Wisdom is knowing when to punch a fucker, and when to wait for a better time.

That is all.

OP pretty much includes that.

"patience and the exercise of restraint"

"properly prioritizes--knows whats worth doing and whats not, and likewise what cannot or should not be done and what can and should (like realizing people can only change themselves)"

Wisdom is bullshit, another fake quality invented so people can pass off information in such a way that the integrity of the source and not the content, is what is questioned.

People can occasionally act in wise ways.  But there is no such thing as a wise person.  Stop using Platonism, it only leads you into linguistic traps and falsehoods.

actually i think the thread turned out quite nicely, considering what it started with. it was a nice OP but -- quickly restrains himself from actually doing it just to try out what happens -- it kinda reminds me of:

Quote
All Is One.

discuss.

if you get my point.

maybe not. maybe i'm wrong and the original post was more thoughtful than that. i can see both ways.

either way i kinda enjoy the kicking trolls thing as well. if you wanted to keep it on-topic, it's easy, just ignore the trolling bits and actively steer the thread back to what you wanted it to be. don't say "guys be more like this and that", simply take the responses you thought were on topic and reply to those. (and if that fails, simply accept there is not much interest --at the moment!-- for the subject)

also, reposting the OP sometimes helps.

good luck.

Not necessarily.  What we call "acting wisely" is a bunch of arbitrary values based highly on context and subject to change.  If instead we were to define the virtue or trait linked to that situation, we would likely have a much more explicit and accurate description of what we are approving of.

What!?  Thread jacks on PD.com?

That UNPOSSIBLE!

I'd be a hypocrite to criticize for the threadjacking thing.  I just don't see why we stand for this shit from trolls.

I guess it's making me lose enthusiasm for the whole ranting/discussing formula.

I always figured that's the whole idea of trolls but for every troll threadjack there's loads of really sweet threads where everybody is just riffing off each other. Even if it aint deep and meaningful I usly find it entertaining.

Yeah, but when a thread is posted with sincere intentions, it's infuriating.

I know *I* answered you.  You paid no attention.

Buncha crap.

Wisdom is knowing when to punch a fucker, and when to wait for a better time.

That is all.

OP pretty much includes that.

"patience and the exercise of restraint"

"properly prioritizes--knows whats worth doing and whats not, and likewise what cannot or should not be done and what can and should (like realizing people can only change themselves)"

Who are you gonna believe?  Your eyes, or your spiritual advisor?

I'll believe it when it starts touching me in unwelcome ways- as above, so below.
