I think thats an insult to good children's writing, to be honest.

Hodge-podge of every piece of fantasy literature and childrens writing ever + semi-decent characterization =/= a masterpiece of literature.

I really enjoyed reading Harry Potter.  The movies I could give or take.  I will say they're phenomenally well cast - where else do you get to see Gary Oldman facing off with Alan Rickman?

Some of the best things I've read as an adult have been children's literature.  It took me about 5 minutes to call The Invention of Hugo Cabret one of my favorite books.

Cause it's fun. And goddamn, I spend 40 hours a week wanting to shoot myself in the head. I don't care how unimpressive or silly or whatever it is--I haven't got time to be too good for fun. :p

Then again, most things I do are stupid but I find them fun, so I am probably a bad barometer. :D

I survived being dragged to the midnight showing. Movie itself wasn't too god awful (excluding all the annoying early-pubescent teen drama).

Actually the best part was the 2012 trailer which was AWESOME.
Title: Re: OMFG HARRY POTTER IS OUT THIS WEEK LOLOLOLOLOL
Post by: Suu on July 15, 2009, 09:42:13 PM
The book is full of teen drama, that's seriously half the story. That means they did it right.

It got 4 stars from the Providence Journal, which is home to quite possibly the most angry, hate-filled critics in the Northeast. If you can please them, you did something right, because the last movie they gave 4 stars to was Slumdog Millionaire.

As for 2012, I want the whole movie to be nothing but this hype, like most shitty apolcalyptic movies are, and then, when you actually go SEE the film, it starts with a couple of Mayans discussing why the last date is December 12th, 2012, and they agree that the rock ran out of room. The end!

Yeah, I'm exhausted, and we were sitting almost too close to the screen. I have to admit that the kid who plays Draco Malfoy finally got out of his ugly phase and did a phenomenal job. Also, Daniel Radcliffe is now shorter than anyone else on the cast, Lol.

I'm sure the film is pretty good.  Most of the previous ones have been alright, or above average viewing so I would expect that to be the case here.

However, it wont be good enough for the fanbase.  Nothing is good enough for the fanbase.  If you think Star Wars fans are unpleasable, wait until you see the screeching reaction this film will get from the Potter fan forums.  The next film will get an even worse one, because of all the Harry/Hermione shippers, but this one will be pretty bad too, because of all the Alan Rickman In Leather Pants, Evil Is Cool, OH NOES DUMBLEDORE nonsense.

They DID change the ending (pulled a Two Towers and shortened it, IMHO)...but Dumbledore still eats the Avada Kedavra.

Post by: Cain on July 16, 2009, 11:21:28 PM
Half the book was fluff and mytharc asspulling anyway, so shortening it is no great loss.

Book seven was an even worse offender for that.  Especially the mytharc business.  There is no fucking way she planned that ending out at all, except when she started to write book six, where there is a noticeable shift in writing style and plot complexity.  Its too half-assed, it screams retroactive relevance.
Title: Re: OMFG HARRY POTTER IS OUT THIS WEEK LOLOLOLOLOL
Post by: Suu on July 16, 2009, 11:32:17 PM
Book 6 is all fluff, it's that filler between "Gee, the last one was good, and I know how I want to end this, but I have to get there somehow."

General Stuart hasn't read any of the books, so a lot of stuff revealed in this one did sort of shock the fuck out of him, but other than that, it's primarily 500 pages of character development.

They succeeded in making me want to punch Lavender Brown equally between film and type, and Narcissa Malfoy has now given me evil costume ideas for the next year, that's for sure. Oh, and Tonks looks more like her book description now.

I went to the midnight showing and enjoyed it. The preview for Sherlock Holmes made me want to go postal.
The movie was quite entertaining. The cave scene was very well done, the bathroom fight with Malfoy was good, Ron's love potion scene was legit funny, and the quidditch looked phenomenal. The dude who played Slughorn was great, and the broad who played Luna once again blew me away (they should have written her into more scenes). WTF was up with the Burrow attack? And Malfoy? They made him look like more of a dufus than they should have. Way too much focus on the shitty teenage love pentagram. And they really butchered the last 50 pages or so. I was eagerly anticipating an epic battle and a great funeral scene, but I left the theatre disappointed. All in all, I thought it was better than any of the previous films.

I didn't think Draco was a doofus, I think they did him justice, especially how the scenes kept cutting to him all focused and shitting-bricks like, he was never brave to begin with. And I didn't miss the battle as much as the funeral. THAT pissed me off, it was like they Two Towered the thing and just decided to trail off when Harry is supposed to be sitting there telling Ginny he has to break up with her so he can go off and get Voldemort once and for all.

HBP is probably my least favorite out of all of them anyway, because of all the damn fluff. They also cut out Ron and Hermione finally sucking face.

However, it was filmed beautifully, the lighting and the angles were very well done (the Quidditch was FANTASTIC), and now that the kids have a lot more acting experience, they're not being slaughtered by bad direction like they were before.

...And Emma Watson starts Brown University in the fall. God have mercy on the city of Providence, the fanboys will be out in FORCE.

Good points:
1) They included an acceptable amount of Quidditch. I seem to recall in past movies they would cut the Quidditch bits out.
2) Dumbledore got an epic Gandalf-esque moment shortly before he bit the dust.
3) A few bits made me crack the fuck up: "She only likes you because everyone thinks you're the chosen one!" "But I am the chosen one." *whack*
4) Luna Lovegood is hysterical and probably my favorite character in all the movies.
5) Slughorn was played well.

Fuck ups:
1) That does not qualify as an epic battle of Death Eaters vs. Howarts teachers.
2) Where's the damn funeral?

And in other news, Harry is short, LOL!

or maybe even flashback to bits in the books the movies didn't cover but is somehow important for the ending

The movie was okay.  I've never read any of the books and don't have any intention of ever doing so.  One observation I made was this movie, to me, was very reminiscent of LOTR in style.  Especially the color schemes used in landscapes, etc.  Even those creatures in the cave were kind of Gollum-looking I thought.

Didn't like this movie too much. Was my least favorite of the series so far.

* * * spoilers * * *

1. No closure for ANY of the plotlines they've got brewing. What is this, wheel of time?
2. So much sexual tension. Which leads nowhere. They captured all the drama of being a teenager with none of the dry humping.
3. the death eaters weren't really characters in this movie so much as they were placeholders for bad guys. They blew up a bridge and Ron's house - neither of which had any consequences.
4. Why did Harry have to ditch the HBP's book again? It seemed rather abrupt when they were like, "You have to get rid of this book!" and harry was like "okay!" ...did I miss something where they decided the book was bad? Hermoine was clearly jealous of it, but that wasn't a reason for Bland Love Interest girl to insist that Harry ditches it
5. Okay so snape is the halfblood prince. Why is that the subtitle of the movie? Again, maybe I'm missing something here, but there didn't seem to be a lot of build up / development around that
6. Secondary love-interest characters completely disappear once they've been dumped. Ron's chick and the cock dude that hermoine brought to the dance... luckily for these teenagers, their characters simply cease to exist once you've hurt their feelings. Okay, we get one sad-eyed scene from the obsessive chick.
7. Harry had to befriend the new teacher in order to get this piece of information which didn't end up being too important. Dumbledore already knew that there were seven important macguffins and had been collecting them for weeks.
8. Why didn't Harry tell Dumbledore that Snape was bonded to protect Malfoy? He had tons of opportunities to mention this, and it would have affected the ending.
9. For that matter, when dumbledore was about to get knocked off, why didn't he just teleport away like he does constantly in this movie? I also find it slightly odd that a super-wizard who has so much power it seems at times like Deus Ex Machina has no defense against being pushed off a building.

I mean, it was entertaining. But when the credits rolled, my GF and I were both like, "what?"

You haven't read any of the books, have you?

1: See Deathly Hallows.
2: More or less character development, though they cut out quite a bit. Obviously: Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione are now items.
3: There was a lot of stuff that happened between the Death Eaters in the book more so than in the movie. However, vital to the 2.5 hour adaptation? Probably not.
4: Sectum sempra. After using the spell for the first time on Malfoy, it scared the fuck out of Harry and he told the others. At that point they decided the book was bad and to get rid of it.
5: Snape is the head of Slytherin House, and he's not pure blood. He is also a Death Eater and not pure blood. Follow? Catching something a little off here? See also: Order of the Phoenix for flashbacks. Snape was bullied all to hell, especially by James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Snape was also in love with Lily Evans, this all ties in more in Deathly Hallows.
6: Lavender Brown is more prominent in the books as she's been around for a while, Cormac McLaggen sort of came out of and fades to the backfield.
7: Dumbledore knew about the rumor of there being Horcruxes and had tried to collect them, even though he wasn't 100% sure. Slughorn's total memory was the absolute truth he needed.
8: See Deathly Hallows.
9: See Deathly Hallows.

Everything was left open for a reason. Like I mentioned even before seeing the film, this book was filler. Rowling knew how she wanted to end the story, she just had to get there.

Haven't read the books, don't intend to. If the movies are any good, they should make sense to people who haven't read the books too.

To some extent, this movie's flaws can be forgiven by the fact that there's another one around the corner. To a limited extent.

I hear (from Eve) that the actor playing Dumbledore hasn't read the books either. He insists he's not playing JK Rowling's character.

I suppose it's just a gripe I have with multi-part series like this. Instead of a real ending, you get a "hang on, this will make sense next year"...

all the other movies were relatively coherent. They were fairly episodic in nature, so could enjoy them even if you hadn't been following the movies so far.

I mean, look at the wizard competition. The whole movie was about the resolution of this one event. So when the event resolved, even though it's a "to be continued!" you still felt like you got a complete story. This movie didn't have any closure to issues explored within the movie.

and as a side note, wasn't the last ending like, "Holy shit! Voldemort is alive again! Now it's on like donkey kong!"

and then in this movie, he sends ... four people after the good guys? Four people that were already out causing havoc. Kind of underwhelming if you ask me, given that they've been trying to resurrect the guy for like five movies.

ALSO: "THE CHOSEN ONE" is now my least favorite fantasy cliche.

Basically, the movie pissed off hardcore Potter-tards because of the stuff they left out, and it annoyed and confused the uninitiated because of the stuff it left out. And then there's me and Suu, who have the vast majority of the plot burned into our minds, which automatically filled in the blank spots and allowed for enjoyment of the good bits.

In other words, 100% success.

The Chosen One get's old in the book too, and they play on that. (Like when Hermione hits Harry in the library for saying he is the Chosen One).

I don't know of who exactly has read the books or not, but from an acting standpoint, probably better to not have read them, that way you don't clash with the director.

And yeah, the whole multi-part series bit. Up until this book, all of them had a resolute ending, whereas Half Blood Prince is essentially the beginning of the end. Even the book had no closure, except that you knew that Dumbledore was dead, and Harry said that he wasn't going back to school for his 7th year. It's definitely my least favorite out of all 7 (Azkaban being my all-time fave.)

There is this whole scene with the funeral, which I do hope they put in the beginning of Deathly Hallows where Harry is sitting there and talking to Ginny basically saying that they had to break up as to not endanger her and stuff. Of all things they cut out, that was definitely the one that bothered me the most. I had the same reaction with that as I did sitting in the theatre with my brother watching the Two Towers and going, "WHERE THE FUCK IS THAT BITCH SHELOB?!" When the credits rolled.

Also, the wand on the desk? Ugh. Get that shit in the casket, yo. That's important.

He plays a big role in the last book even if he's gone.  So you'll either see him in flashbacks or just lots of dialogue about him.

This movie was definitely the most beautiful of the lot.  The shot where Harry was getting dragged under water by the inferi was gorgeous, as well as Snape and Harry facing off at the end.  I agree about the Quidditch match, it was way more exciting than any of the other movies.  It really gave a contact sport feel to it, with them flying in formations and colliding.

I ended up seeing it quite willingly with my girlfriend on Friday, then had a surprise viewing thrown at me with a bunch of friends on the cape two days later.

They made some bad choices with what they did and did not include.  The bridge collapse at the beginning was needless and probably exorbitantly expensive, which they could have used for an actual battle at the end.  I got pretty Pottertard about it.  I'm surprised to hear about the lack of enthusiasm for this book, I thought this was one of the best.  The mystery about the potions book was really dark, especially after the Sectum Sempra incident, and Harry chasing Snape out of the castle is one of my favorite interactions from the whole series.  I really liked the ambiguity of whether or not Snape was correcting Harry as he deflected his spells or if he was mocking him or both, which the movie missed entirely.  The movie even had that weird bit where Snape told Harry to shush up in the astronomy tower, pretty much giving away his affiliation.

I can't say I'm upset about it because even though I've seen all the movies they haven't ever done much for me.  They've been fun or interesting, and watching how some of the actors tackle their roles is great (Helena Bonham Carter is an excellent Bellatrix Lestrange), I just don't hold them as a high priority.  Meh.

I agree with Cram's assessment. I read the HP books because I liked the movies--they were episodic, and they were easily digested as they were.

As I understand it, the seventh book is going to be made into TWO films because there is too much to put into one. They should have done the same thing with this film, as even though I've read the books, I couldn't remember everything and I felt pretty confused fairly often. A lot of stuff was glossed over or skipped or whatever. So, although I enjoyed it, I hope they do a better job with Deathly Hallows.

Also, I still had fun. :D

IOZ reviews: The Half-Blood Prince

QuoteAs I have occassionally noted in the past, there is nothing in fiction or film quite so awful as the conviction of certain inferior authors that the only way to move a story forward is to cause characters to make exactly the wrong choice at every fork in the road, hurtling from one climax to the next on the hurricane winds of poor decision making. A minor mutation of this particular genus of viral ineptitude is the story in which some or other Chosen One, no matter the fact that he is known high and low, far and wide, upwards and downwards, leftways and rightways as exactly such, no matter how preternatural his Jeezitude, cannot for the life or death of him get anyone to believe him when he declares the the skulking, plainly evil villain is skulking, plainly evil, a villain.

The conceit can work if no one knows that Joe Messiah is actually the Christ, especially if he himself doesn't yet know it, and children's literature is obviously full of stories reflecting that greatest of childhood frustrations, adults really refusing to listen to you because you're just a kid. In the first dozen or so volumes of Rowling's billion-word centology, we are nearly in such territory, as the stories both feature and are written for younger kids, and the hero, though known to some as the übermensch of the master race, is as yet enough of an unknown quantity in the "Wizarding World" to be treated as a . . . well, a mixed-race arriviste. By now, however, in the series' penultimate volume and next-to-penultimate movie, the child has had his bar mitzvah, can be considered a man, and in any case has featured prominently in the magical gossip columns. J.K. Rowling also took great care to emblazon his forehead with the messianic mark, and why it is, at long last, that the young man cannot simply march into his kindly headmaster's office and lay bare his suspicions never becomes clear. Harry Potter, the Pubescent Prince, likewise makes liberal use of the related conceit: characters who withhold crucial information from other characters To Protect Them. Remarkably, this tactic does not appear to work out very well for anyone.

The book, which I attempted to skim at the library, is broadly expository. The film necessarily condenses, but can't quite account for the total lack of plot, the series of largely unconnected MacGuffins that occupy time between infodumps the length of Atlas Shrugged. In order to signal that the kids are growing up, the moments between magical chases are in the movie mostly occupied by moments of uncomfortable cryptopederasty and something the British call "snogging," evidently kissing, most memorably a few extras in a bizarre nighttime hallway makeout scene like something composed by Richard Linklater and set off in the shadowy corner of the field beyond the keg party. There is also the obligatory sports competition, an invented contest called Quidditch, a sort of cross between jai alai, lacrosse, Go-Kart, and a Bel Ami flick, in which boy fly around on long, thin, uncircumcised penises, chasing a ball.

The run time is just under five days, and in the end the school's headmaster is killed by Alan Rickman, who by never hiding how much he despises acting in this movie or how preposterous he finds the lines he is obliged to speak perfectly captures his pseudoviallainous character, whose uncolored sourness telegraphs his ultimate redemption from this grand distance of two films and a thousand light years. The cast of these movies is remarkable. Kill all the children and you would have Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare's Whatever standing around on coffee break. Poor Maggie Smith seems to have misplaced her Demerol, and in the midst of it all, there is a funeral for a spider, which unaccountably moves some other professor to get drunk, which inexplicably causes him to instantly sober up and yet still spill the beans: the villain, Voldemort, has found a way to make himself immortal. Yes, I was not surprised.

If George Lucas was able to concoct his fictional universe by imagining Joseph Campbell as a moron, J.K. Rowling has done it by imagining him as an attention-deficient child, a wall-banging Ritalin addict who doesn't want to draw, he wants to catch, doesn't want to catch, he wants to eat, doesn't want to eat, he wants to play with blocks. Like Odysseus, her hero is forever bumbling into an interminable digression, but unlike Odysseus, he has no wits to keep about him. Confronted by Scylla and Charybdis, he would find himself simply borne aloft and away from danger by some hippobirdiphant who happened to be winging by; Tiresius would be his algebra teacher, whom he'd just follow into the world of the dead, perhaps hiding behind some trees along the way; held in amorous captivity by Circe, he might do a bit of snogging, but in the end, dream only of returning to his dormitory garret, to the tender embrace of his strapping redheaded roommate, or the fey, tattooed, emogoth Draco, last seen crying in the restroom because They Just Don't Understand.

tl;dr version: Potter holds the Idiot Ball....forever!

If you spent three years studying literature at a private college, you too could be a pretentious yet witty and iconoclastic homo, living in Pittsburgh, secretly plotting to overthrow your bosses in anarchic revolution and making fun of Democrats.

Dumbledores speech patterns remind me of Flight of the Conchords' David Bowie impression.

Also, those kids were so acting.

Honestly, I don't think I've seen a better comedy in years.  I was practically wetting myself the whole way through.
