Charlie Brooker has spoken:
QuoteUsing Windows is like living in a communist bloc nation circa 1981. And don't change it.
I admit it: I'm a bigot. A hopeless bigot at that: I know my particular prejudice is absurd, but I just can't control it. It's Apple. I don't like Apple products. And the better-designed and more ubiquitous they become, the more I dislike them. I blame the customers. Awful people. Awful. Stop showing me your iPhone. Stop stroking your Macbook. Stop telling me to get one.
Seriously, stop it. I don't care if Mac stuff is better. I don't care if Mac stuff is cool. I don't care if every Mac product comes equipped with a magic button on the side that causes it to piddle gold coins and resurrect the dead and make holographic unicorns dance inside your head. I'm not buying one, so shut up and go home. Go back to your house. I know, you've got an iHouse. The walls are brushed aluminum. There's a glowing Apple logo on the roof. And you love it there. You absolute monster.
Of course, it's safe to assume Mac products are indeed as brilliant as their owners make out. Why else would they spend so much time trying to convert non-believers? They're not getting paid. They simply want to spread their happiness, like religious crusaders.
Consequently, nothing pleases them more than watching a PC owner struggle with a slab of non-Mac machinery. Recently I sat in a room trying to write something on a Sony Vaio PC laptop which seemed to be running a special slow-motion edition of Windows Vista specifically designed to infuriate human beings as much as possible. Trying to get it to do anything was like issuing instructions to a depressed employee over a sluggish satellite feed. When I clicked on an application it spent a small eternity contemplating the philosophical implications of opening it, begrudgingly complying with my request several months later. I called it a bastard and worse. At one point I punched a table.
This drew the attention of two nearby Mac owners. They hovered over and stood beside me, like placid monks.
"Ah: the delights of Vista," said one.
"It really is time you got a Mac," said the other.
"They're just better," sang the first monk.
"You won't regret it," whispered the second.
Leave me alone, I thought. I don't care if you're right. I just want you to die.
I know Windows is awful. Everyone knows Windows is awful. Windows is like the faint smell of piss in a subway: it's there, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's grim, it's slow, everything's badly designed and nothing works properly: using Windows is like living in a communist bloc nation circa 1981. And I wouldn't change it for the world, because I'm an abject bloody idiot and I hate myself, and this is what I deserve: to be sentenced to Windows for life.
That's why Windows works for me. But I'd never recommend it to anybody else, ever. This puts me in line with roughly everybody else in the world. No one has ever earnestly turned to a fellow human being and said, "Hey, have you considered Windows?"
Until now. Microsoft, hell-bent on tackling the conspicuous lack of word-of-mouth recommendation, is encouraging people — real people — to host "Windows 7 launch parties" to celebrate the release of, er, Windows 7.
To assist the party-hosting massive, they've uploaded a series of spectacularly cringeworthy videos to YouTube, in which the four most desperate actors in the world stand around in a kitchen sharing tips on how best to indoctrinate guests in the wonder of Windows. If they were staring straight down the lens reading hints off a card it might be acceptable; instead, they have been instructed to pretend to be friends. The result is the most nauseating display of artificial camaraderie since the horrific Doritos "Friendchips" TV campaign (which caused 50,000 people to kill themselves in 2003, or should have done).
It's so terrible, it induces an entirely new emotion: a blend of vertigo, disgust, anger and embarrassment that I like to call "shitasmia". It not only creates this emotion: it defines it. It's the most shitasmic cultural artefact in history. Watch it for yourself.
Still, bad though it is, I vaguely prefer the clumping, clueless, uncool, crappiness of Microsoft's bland Stepford gang to the creepy assurance of the average Mac evangelist. At least the grinning dildos in the Windows video are fictional, whereas eerie replicant Mac monks really are everywhere, standing over your shoulder in their charcoal pullovers, smirking at your hopelessly inferior OS, knowing they're better than you because they use Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard. I don't care if you're right.
I just want you to die.
I use Windows Me, and I'm never upgrading! I configured this slow ass piece of shit to crash only once a week.
Now, if only I could get FF3 to compile...

I think the file handling and image previewing software Macs are bundled bundled with is utter crap. Other than that, I like my Mac a lot more than I like my PC; I find it a lot more stable, as well as faster.
But then, all I ever do is arty bullshit and run Quickbooks, so I guess I don't really

and I suppose this is pretty much what this boils down to all the time. Macs are admittedly superior for "arty bullshit" (which is a fairly important area to be superior in) and less prone to bugs and technical hiccups, but it's not very customizable and you can't really DO alot with it. It's the difference between a brand-new Mercedes and a '69 GTO and which one you prefer.

Shh... If people realize that Linux isn't actually any more difficult to use than any other consumer OSes, I'll be stuck doing tech support for newbies again.

I remember Lindows :vom:
and my first distro came on a buttload of 3.5" floppies.
EDIT: However, I no longer proselytize as I had a religiOS experience or "UPC" (Unverifiable Personal Computer) as it is called by other Technomancers. I was hopping on the route to Damascus.com and a Flash (app) blinded me. A voice came down and said, "Why do you persecute the Windows users?" and I said "I do not persecute them, I am trying to show them the right way." Then the voice said "They have to deal with windows on their desktop, having you rant about Linux being better is the last thing they need after reinstalling for the third time that year. You see, there is an investment in Windows, once upon the path, you hope the years of rebooting, reformatting and regclean are not wasted, but rather acts of martyrdom to be prepared when the Second Coming of a decent Microsoft OS finally happens."
Then the gamma control was fixed on my eyes, and I came to realize the truth. I use the OS that works for me and those other spags can fuck off with their lame broken ass excuse for an operating system, I don't care if they sacrifice their time, money, sweat and blood... its not my problem.

I'm not quite such an old hand, myself. My first distro came with X. It's just that my video card wasn't supported.
Lindows has become Linspire, and is still around. Lindows (along with Xandros) is just one super-commercial end of the trend. On the other end you have Ubuntu, which is still largely geared towards windows users (along with Fedora and SuSe, both of which are fighting to gain back their position as distro of choice for people who were using windows last thursday). To a certain extent, 'linux for the desktop' has been a large chunk of distros for quite some time -- Red Hat and Mandrake were both edging for that position when I first started, and KDE was apparently explicitly designed to look like windows 3.x in the pre-1.0 phases. I have heard good things about the new Windows, and I read about a project Microsoft was working on, and it caught my interest, but I suspect they are trying to get people todo the work for them for free. Haiku/BeOS is fun to play with, but I haven't been able to really use it. I should try Open Solaris as I loved working with Solaris.

Believe it or not, there are windows geeks who geek the fuck out at parties about windows. Several of them work at Microsoft and wrote the Unix Hater's Handbook.
rygD, have you tried Plan 9? A while back I went and tried a bunch of different OSes; Plan 9 was pretty neat.
I have OpenSolaris 9, but it tends not to work properly on non-sun hardware -- it worked great when I used it on a SPARC (not mine), but it hashed my disk and refused to install on a reasonably standard intel machine.
I think I tried Plan 9. I think the only way I half assed got it to work was as a virtual machine, and I started to get irritated by how many issues I was having. What hardware works best with it?
I really wanted a SPARC. I remember my first encounter with them. I walked into a lab full of them, not sure what kind, and they were tiny. I remember thinking that the way the lab was set up was fucking cool, and how the computers looked bad ass. Then someone told me they had an issue with them sometimes overheating and smoking or catching on fire. That just made me want to try to push them to their limits.
Wow, that was almost 10 years ago. I am getting old.

i love macs but wish i didn't have to cough up tons of $$ when in order to keep the piece of shit up to date.

Really...Windows has benefits?

Other neckbeards.
Windows - Bloated, feature rich, garbage that does fucking everything, including crashing all over the place
Linux - Lite garbage that does next to fuck all, reasonably efficiently
Mac - Expensive, gold plated garbage that costs at least 40 times what it's worth. Don't look at the price of comparably specced equipment just look at the cute little lowercase 'i' on the logo - only the big bucks can get that awesome lowercase 'i'
You argue the merits of any of these pieces of shit with me and I'll just pick one of the others and argue against you for shits and giggles. :lulz:

I have yet to hear a convincing argument against continuing to run an OS I am familliar with. Windows does everything I need it to do (browse internet, word processing, plug and play hardware, some games), can run just about software that I download, and I don't have to learn anything new to continue to use it. As far as I know, there are no OSses which are better at doing those things in the capacity which I use them.
True, there are some annoying things about windows, but nothing as annoying as using a command prompt to do everything.
also, windows comes with MS Paint.

I won't convince you either way (see my ReligiOS experience stated earlier). However, the concept that you need to do anything in linux via command line (shell) is no longer true. My Dad built his own Linux box with no problems. There is enough of a push for Linux desktops at this point, that many distributions are heavily augmented with gui based tools. the Drake toolset from Mandriva allows you to manage hardware, firewalls, software etc etc etc. Ubuntu has gui tools for all administration as does some of the more consumer based versions like Linux Mint.
Use whatever you like, but don't fear the shell.
I was going to say doesn't Ubuntu have a very Window's like interface?
To me, that's a pretty big selling point. Now, if they can sort out gaming issues and MS Paint...

MS Paint and many games run under Wine. If you're lazy and have money to blow, the commercial version of Mandriva ships with the Crossover Wine stuff from Codeweavers which lets you run
most windows apps/games with no issues.
I have come across a minimum of six MS Paint clones for *nix. Several of them are in TCL and will run on anything with a TCL/Tk environment.

ESPECIALLY NOT IF YOU INSTALL LINUX ON THE L-SHAPED BLOCKS.
Tetris never gets boring, people are just quitters.
I propose a new OS. It's actually just a BIOS, and it turns your computer into a tetris machine.
