Title: Words that piss me off.
Post by: Richter on December 08, 2009, 02:58:36 PM
"Bap"
(a small, round bun.)
Fucking shit, could you give it a name that DOESN'T sound like a term for some obscure item of personal hygiene?  "Bap" brings to mind an underwear insert specifically designed to capture feces.  (Which should be produced and given away with doses of "Ali")  Like you're going to watch the tapes of St. Carlin, or eat Mexican food, better put a BAP in.
Or maybe you're having one of those not QUITE diarrhea but still rapid fire liquidy shit days when you want a little extra personal security because you doubt your ability to EVER wipe enough without aid of a fire hose and bemused eunuch attendants.  Better pack a pack of baps.
Baps: for those who can't stand using ass tampons.

"Paradigm"
Businesspeople.  I blame businesspeople.  Words that can be easily understood and overused in attempts to impress people should be kept away from them.  They don't mix.  Kind of like toddlers with tasers, except less of a spectator sport.

"Toys"
Imagine an over stimulated child flying into a retail establishment screaming this over and over in a high pitched voice with a slight lisp while being chased by a harried, chastising parent.

"Ptosis"
Because it reminds me of stoners, poster children for fetal alcohol syndrome, and Down syndrome, who also frequently suffer from it.

"Whatever"
A catchall phrase that is used as an indecisive, passive-agressive placeholder, signalling an apathetic demeanor, and an intentional lack of effort spent answering a direct question.  Implies the following message: "Neither you, nor the issue at hand, concerns me enough to make a decision.  However, if future events do not please me, I shall complain about it."

This is a word that allows excuses to exist. And that's horrible. :evilmad:

"Smorgasbord" no one can say it without sounding like a complete fucking retard. I don't care who the fuck you are, if you say this in my presence I will fuck you up both physically and emotionally.

You all know that as soon as we collect enough of these, there will be some twisted contest to see who can write the best sentence or paragraph that uses all of these.

Whatever, your paradigm is clearly not optimised enough to understand the need for Ptosis based toys to sell as part of our smorgasbord of products.  Now get me a bap.

"fundamentally" -- seriously.

This is the most overused word of 2008-2009. Every time someone says it around me I make this shrill uuuunghrgh! sound and they look at me like "wut.... duh".

I like the word but, when used in that context, it does fill me with homicidal urges. The same people seem to say "pacifically" a lot - also has me reaching for the alibis.

"Pacifically" ?

Do these fuckers have a speach impediment or are they just too lazy to really resist, and too morally obtuse for passive resistance or Ganhdi - Fu?

(As in: "I did not specifically say 'NO', I just pacifically recieved fucking.")

Speach impediment then.  I like my idea better.

The urge to give this the Terry Prachet treatment overtakes me!

Adam, being an adherent of the Lower Pacifical Church, was one of the more ineffectual additions to an already questionable town constabulatory.  Pacificalist followed the teaching of Bang - Meh, a recent day guru who insisted that the way to salvation and enlightenment was to offer no resistance or expression of will against the will of others, on the ground that such inter human conflict was the root of all inter human conflict and strife.  An adherent should simply allow the opposer their way, should any level of resistance, dissatisfaction, or disagreement be displayed, and rely on the conscience of the other person to shame themselves into consideration.  Bang - Meh was martyred exemplifying his own philosophy when the local Red Cross forgot to keep track of how often they sent him requests to donate blood.

Needless to say, the only things shamed by the actions of a Pacificalist were Anarchism and Communism, who promptly lost the title "Things which ONLY work in theory" by comparison.

Conversations with a Pacificalist were usually about as productive as verbal intercourse with wet toilet tissue, and conversations between pacificalist adherents were known to be lengthy affairs of generalist statements direct at no one as the two tried to figure out an entirely un offensive topic upon which to converse.  They usually ended with statements about plain lettuce.  One entire sect of monks had been attempting to reconcile Pacificalism and E Prime for many years, to formulate a perfectly non offensive form of speach, but their degree of success is uncertain as non of them have spoken since begining.

Adam's employ with the town guard was secured as concessions to a religious rights advocacy group composed of people who have never had their house broken into, or been mugged.  In truth, Adam himself did not even WANT employ with the Guard, but did not wish to offend the vigorous and excited advocates, who were so thrilled with the concept of displayign the town's tolerance and diversity that even a Pacificalist could become a success in a town run oepration such as the Gaurd, did not stop to pay heed to Adam's pacifical treatment of his own inner wish NOT to have such a job in the first place.

The Town itself could find no reasonable way to fire or reasign Adam, the mayor professing to rather "Cover his bare ass in birdseed and take a walk through a harpy nest." than have to deal with that group again.  The Chief handled this much more tactfully (having a better understanding of the advocates, and Pacificalism from several "sensitivity sessions" he was forced to attend.), and assigned Adam to patrol the south wall where nothing ever happened.  Adam, having religious reason to neve GAURD anything, was instructed to hand a similar sensitivity flyer to anyone he might think questionable and ring the alarm bell immediately.

People confuse literally with figuratively, a lot.

If you figuratively threw up your lower intestines, okay, then I know you're not feeling well. If you say literally, I'm going to be either looking at you funny, or asking you if you want an ambulance.

apparently it because the discoverer spelled it in 2 different ways and Websters regularised one as the American spelling and The Oxford made the other one British version

i pronounce it aloo-minum.  and, yeah, i only ever say nucular in jest.

speaking of pronunciation: i get a kick out of the word "fire" because if you go by the grade school "hand clapping" method of counting syllables, it seems to have two.  but i'm pretty sure it is technically a one-syllable word.  what cracks me up is that i can't ever seem to pronounce "fire" monosyllabically without sounding like i have a southern drawl.

Also, knowing the etymology of the word helps its forms make sense. "To orientate oneself" means, roughly, "to face the East". Over time the suffix "-ate" has become commonly considered superfluous, but it is grammatically correct.

I'm not sure how to explain it clearly without linguistic mumbo jumbo, but in the case of "fire" the r is it's own syllable. Far is different because the r at the end is not it's own syllable, but rather the coda to the syllable "fa".

(Don't take my words as gospel, though, because accents can vary wildly. It's just that for me, pronouncing "fire" as a true single syllable sounds extremely ridiculous.)

i believe "Orientation" to be "Orient" with the suffix -ation at the end.  Much like "Lament" and "Lamentation"

"Lamentate" sounds even stupider (sic) than "Orientate"

the problem probably arises from thinking too much in terms of Masturbate and Masturbation.  As opposed to Relax and Relaxation.

Yeah, there are at least two major ways to pronounce words like "fire" in U.S. English. The most common way is the two-syllable, where you pronounce it Fye-err.  The one syllable way is the accent in which the word is pronounced something like F(u)rrrr, which is more or less specific to the greater Appalachian region.  In that accent, "fire" and "bear" rhyme, and you can make a pun about the Three Wise Men being firefighters because "afar" and "a fire" are pronounced identically (as in, "We came from afar/a fire.")

(Also, the way I say it, I'd consider "far" to be a dipthong - in between "fur" and "fire.")

Yes, but bad though "whatev" is I reckon "meh" is just as bad. Its not a word, its not an abbreviation, its just a kind of disinterested grunt. I mean, ffs, did they go to all the trouble of inventing the interwebs so we could go back to just grunting at each other . . . !

Yes, but bad though "whatev" is I reckon "meh" is just as bad. Its not a word, its not an abbreviation, its just a kind of disinterested grunt. I mean, ffs, did they go to all the trouble of inventing the interwebs so we could go back to just grunting at each other . . . !

Edited for clarity

Blame The Simpsons. Also, I rather like "meh".

I think anybody who says "whatev" is trying to sound apathetic and indolent, though.  Which just means its a word that's very effective and conveying a sentiment that pisses you off.

For words like "fire"--yes, there's an added glide in there for some dialects--a "y" sound that can make it more than one syllable or VOWEL SOUND that you hear when it's spoken.  So it comes out "Fie-yer" rather than "fire" as all one vowel sound.

And yes, some words like "whatev" carry connotative value like disdain or flip behavior for some dialects, but that wouldn't be across the board with every English language user, certainly.

"Coupon", specifically when people pronounce it "kew - pon", not "coop- on", like and decent person out too.

Everyone knows what a coupon is.  Even when it's some insipd, valueless shit, like a payment coupon for your loans, which only serves to remind your dumb ass to send the monthly bill in.

If you go around asking for a "Kew - pon", I'm going to make it a point to direct you to the aisle with the "Tampax" and "Depends"

Yes, yes it does.

And xenophobic yankees, holed into what they are convinced is the East coast's last bastion of intelligent though, cannot be convinced this pronunciaion has no deeper connotations.

When they were switching TV over to digital, the proprietor of the "New Yankee Workshop", one of Boston Public TV's old beloved fixtures of simple woodworking how - to, did a PSA advising people about the "Kew - Pon" they could get for the digital signal converter box.  He was instantly marked as an outsider, cast down by the intelligencia of Cambridge, and his show slated to end it's run months later.

Who can blame them for their panic?  November before last, the rest of the country turned a different color.  They knew there was nothing between them and the West coast except the RIGHT.
Never mind they had hunkered in with one of the more racist attitudes of the north.  Dirty old town.

This was in my "Communications" "Class's" "textbook" (and yes, all three of those words require scare quotes individually.)

Quote
Articulation and Pronunciation. In addition to the rate, pitch, and volume of your voice, articulation and pronunciation help give meaning to your verbal message. Articulation consists of forming vowel and consonant sounds correctly. Because many people are lazy when it comes to articulating the sounds used to communicate, they may slur the s sound or leave sounds out of words altogether. In many cultures, this is very distracting; in others, it can be seen as a behavior symbolizing group membership. Some commonly mispronounced words are listed following. How many of these do you mispronounce?

Distracting Pronunciation and Articulation

    * AKS instead of ask
    * PIN instead of pen
    * DEM instead of them
    * DIS instead of this
    * JIST instead of just
    * NU-CU-LER instead of nuclear
    * NUTTIN instead of nothing
    * GITTIN instead of getting
    * CAUSE or CUZ instead of because
    * AN instead of and
    * BEAN instead of being
    * PITCHER instead of picture
    * WIF instead of with
    * WORSHington instead of Washington

That's right, people who pronounce words differently than you are just being LAZY.

I'm also confused as to why the put "nuculur" in there.  I mean, it's not like Bush is ever going to read take this "class," right?

Ok, this isn't really a word, it's a mode of speech.

Does it piss me off?  Yes.
Is it stilted and awkward?  Yup.
Is it a way of controlling the conversation? Yes.
Does it give the illusion of providing information other than what the speaker explicitly wants?  You bet.
Does it prevent other people actually asking relevant questions?  Sure thing.

We did it with film back in those days.  Stopping and starting constantly, getting each eye movement, hand gesture, posture original position, posture change, intonation, prosody, and pause, with pause length.

That was the boring part.  Took forever.  We did it with Hi-8 material.

Then you put it together and start looking at it on paper, along with the actual video.  That shit was hot.  It was purely subjective, you need to REALLY know the subculture you're dealing with, but damn it was fun.

'Aks' isntead of 'ask' used to irritate me until I discovered that 'Aks' is actually quite old.

ask
O.E. ascian "ask," from earlier ahsian, from P.Gmc. *aiskojan (cf. O.S. escon, O.Fris. askia, M.Du. eiscen, O.H.G. eiscon, Ger. heischen "to ask, demand"), from PIE *ais- "to wish, desire" (cf. Skt. icchati "seeks, desires," Arm. aic "investigation," O.C.S. iskati "to seek," Lith. ieškau "to seek"). Form in Eng. infl. by a Scand. form of the word (cf. Dan. æske; the O.E. would have evolved by normal sound changes into ash, esh, which was a Midlands and s.w. England dialect form). The variant in modern dialect ax is as old as O.E. acsian and was an accepted literary variant until c.1600. O.E. also had fregnan, frignan which carried more directly the sense of "question, inquire," and is from PIE root *prek-, the common source of words for "ask" in most I.E. languages. If you ask me "in my opinion" is attested from 1910.

So it was in usage, then it fell out of usage and has now returned.

I usually hate it when people say something was (adjective)-ly something, rather than formulating the sentence without the "-ly" on the end of their adjective. It almost always sounds like bad high school fiction.

Also, fuck all you haters. I love all the words in this thread. I love the misuse of words, the mispronunciation, the over exposure of hackneyed cliché and meaningless constructs, the sheer laziness of some people in making their animal like grunts.

Language is a tool, people. Like all tools it can sometimes be ugly as fuck, especially in every day life, and sometimes you will be used by apprentices and very poorly trained tradesmen. How they grunt is never and should never be as important as what they are trying to grunt at you.

"He  May Obs"

Say it like the Japanese "-hime" suffix, denoting "princess" (v. rough translation).  Obs as in Obstetrician.

Books on conversation analysis/language, interaction and culture:

Anything by Allesandro Duranti, Elinor Ochs, Marjorie Goodwin, Charles Goodwin.  I worked with these folks while at UCLA.  Even better, Wallace Chafe or John DuBois, and I worked with those fellows at UC Santa Barbara.

Harvey Sachs also had the seminal works, but he died long, long ago.

Not the word itself, but its common usage: Unique

It means "one of a kind." So a thing either is unique, or it is not. There is no such thing as "very unique" or "somewhat unique;" there are no degrees of uniqueness.

Here's my new least favorite word:

OFFICLE

in October, our office is being redesigned. Everybody's cubicle is being replaced by an officle. What the fuck is that, you ask? IT'S NOT A CUBICLE, IT'S NOT AN OFFICE! Actually, it IS a cubicle but there's a sliding shower door, and little plastic windows so you can get a nice view of the hall.

"OFFICLE". say it out loud, it'll stick in your throat.  And if anybody hears you say it, they'll smack you upside the head.

It is my understanding that the cubicle office setup was a reaction to the open office layout causing a 'peripheral vision startle reflex psychosis'.  If i recall correctly it was found that when you have people staring at something on their desk for long periods of time it causes a problem, in that, when one normally catches movement out of the corner of their eye, they have a reflex to look at it.  in the open office layout you continuously look at something (your desk) while ignoring a bunch of movement in your peripheral vision.  this extended repression of a natural reflex was said to be the cause of 'psychotic-like' behavior.  so they put up cubicle walls to prevent this...
probably bullshit, but i like it anyways....

If nothing else the cublice walls focus this onto one spot, directly behind you.  I'd think this would make it worse.  Anywyas, I've been much calmer at work since I installed mirrors.
If it's directly behind you, then the only workers affected would be the prey species with eyes on the sides of their heads.  There may be something to this, as there is a fellow i work with that does suffer such an ill fated physiognomy, and he is a psychotic asshole.

When people use "Never" as a reaction. ("My brother won an award." "Never.")

The phrase "At the end of the day..."

Conglomerate

Flavourful and Flavoursome.

When they stick the word "solution" after another word as shorthand. "Debt solution" "home office solution" "data management solution"

eco-friendly (it's never mentioned whether they mean ecology or economy)

OFFICLE

in October, our office is being redesigned.

First association for me was with "offal".

Everything any politician ever says. I can't point out specific words because they use words that are fine on their own, but somehow when combined in that magical formula that only a politician can concoct, they generate an impenetrable field of bullshit. Every time I hear another UN Security Council "resolution" that not only says nothing at all, but takes 35 pages of fine print to do it, suicide automatically moves up 3 slots on my list of vacation ideas.

Also,

"literally" when you don't really mean it. "I literally shit my pants." I hope not...
"exetra" - No. It's two words. "et cetera." Besides that, it's Latin, which puts it way out of your league: just don't try to use it.
"for real" - Just shut up right fucking now.

And misusing figures of speech and other word combinations:

"use to/suppose to" - No, moron. That doesn't make any sense. It's "used to."
"would/could/should of" - Fuck you. Die. Don't you even think about what you're saying or writing?
"myriad of X" - Myriad already means "a large quantity of." Don't add another of. It makes you look you were home-schooled in Kansas.

"myriad of X" - Myriad already means "a large quantity of." Don't add another of. It makes you look you were home-schooled in Kansas.

"myriad X" and "myriad of X" are both correct.  Myriad is both a noun (meaning a collection of 10,000 [or other large number] things) and a cardinal adjective.  So you can have a myriad of soldiers in the same way you can have a division of them or a flock of birds.

Quote from: vexati0n on August 01, 2010, 08:41:11 AM
"use to/suppose to" - No, moron. That doesn't make any sense. It's "used to."
"would/could/should of" - Fuck you. Die. Don't you even think about what you're saying or writing?

The "d" and "t" sounds in English differ only by whether your throat is vibrating when you make the noise.  Because of this, when people say phrases like "used to" and "supposed to" it comes out like [eu] [ss] [d/t] [oo].  The -ed and t- just blend together, and there's no reason to write the same sound down twice when you only say it once.

"f" and "v" differ in the same way.  And "have" is often abbreviated as [schwa] [v/f] or just [v/f] in speech - compare I've, you've, etc.  "Of", of course, is always pronounced [schwa] [v/f].  So in practice, people would pronounce "should have" "should've" and "should of" in exactly the same way.  "Should've" is obviously not a proper word (despite following the same convention as I've, etc) so people just use "should of" instead.
Title: Re: Words that piss me off.
Post by: tyrannosaurus vex on August 17, 2010, 06:09:31 PM
I'm talking about written words, mostly. Yes, they sound the same. That isn't the point. "Should of" makes no sense, grammatically or logically. It is "Should have." Failing to recognize that is one's writing is hard evidence of indefensible ignorance. Likewise, "Use to" is brainless crap that stems from an inability to comprehend basic elements of the English language and the fundamental origins of what you're saying, and therefore exposes a writer's utter lack of value as a human being.

Basically, if you cannot conjugate a verb, you should be buried alive in a tub of itching powder.

As for "myriad," you might be right but it still feels wrong.

[edit: fix grammar error. shut up.]

Since the written word was primarily invented as a vehicle to convey the spoken word, isn't it a bit pedantic and disproportionately purist to expect it to follow it's own rules? Surely the written word should follow the grammatical rules of the speaker's vocal style?

For instance, this sentence, when read back phonetically, in Liverpool, perfectly conveys the speakers wish to purchase a certain article, in a larger size, but regrets that his funds were insufficient to cover the cost.

"Iwah gunna gerra bigga one, burra neva hadda nuff cash on me"

So it's actually more accurate to write like that, rather than to follow Vexation's morbidly obsessive pedantism, and insistance upon formal written structure and syntax. Ima gonna shut up now.

For what it's worth, I agree with both of you to some extent.

The rules of communication in English are useful (and maybe even necessary) to ensure that communication is standard and understandable over various kinds of cultural difficulties.

But if I want to write in Scots vernacular, for example, to reinforce whatever it is I am communicating, I will. There is more colour and life in it.

The "Ima" usage is part of what's known as "fast speech phenomenon."  I'm sure many an ESL learner has scratched their heads hearing Americans (and Canadians?) say,

"I'munna go to the store."

The "gonna" that we usually put on the verb go ends up being transferred, because of the proximity of /m/ to /n/ in how they are pronounced in the mouth, so I'm becomes "I'munna"...which leaves you with "I'munna go."

As to the statement of "speaking our own dialects however we want," it doesn't usually work that way.  You have to have a cohort of speakers who commonly use these constructs, and then they are transferred and used amongst the cohort, and they can spread to other cohorts.

As for writing, formalized writing will have its rules and whatnot, but transferring spoken discourse to the written is always subject to some sort of "tweaking."  The spelling errors of dropping the unvoiced -ed at the end of words like "supposed" was already explained above--the brain doesn't recognize what it already knows about the verb due to how it's "smooshed together" when you're saying it.

Poodles rule, you just haven't met the right one.

Call them "Ben Franklins" if it helps you think of them as renowned diplomats.

Poodles, when not trained, are nasty, ill tempered bastards, I've heard.

I knew one like that.  She escaped (again) during a week of rainstorms, didn't come back for 9 or so days.  And more than that, she had a taste for expensive things that are left in chewing range.  And she insisted on crapping in the house.  Once she managed to almost hang herself to death by a hook off the balcony.  Wasn't there for that one, but still.

I don't like to word.  You're confusing this with the "Dogs that piss me off" thread, which would have Chihuahuas and Boston Terriers as my top 2.  Training and personality is the big part of any dog though, as my aunt's bratty lab, and Angel the awesome pitbull prove.

Ah, yeah.  Labradors are a bit hit and miss, imxp.

My dog is half pit bull, half rottweiler, and half lab. Idk how that adds up but still. She's fucking crazy. I wanted to name her Eris but got overruled, so her name is Ava. She's really nice but she will scare the shit out of anyone who doesn't know that.

Totally agree with you on this one.  They're two perfectly descriptive words, and the sounds of them don't annoy me as much as some others, but they are so often lumped together and overused in context by food commercials that they make me want to punch throats.  Liek the "Romeo and Juliet" overture (I'm fairly certian that's the name.)  Fine piece of classica music, but it's overplayed so much to try to summon up the context of "head over heals in love", that I can't stand the fucking thing.

As much as I lvoe good food, I have NEVER felt that way about a low calorie cake or sandwich cookie snack.  Look forward to feeling the same way towards Hendrix and Elvis when their stuff passes into the realms of liberty free use.

Talking of commercials and vaginas, last week, I went to a Supermarket, to get a particular brand of breakfast cereal for a friend. I couldn't find it on the shelves, so I asked the girl who was stacking,    "Can you show me where your Crispy Cunt is"?

I really did mean to say "Country Crisp". Honestly.

I've usually heard it in a context of 'managed to lie my way out of trouble'.

'I blagged my way past the police officer' or 'he tried to blag his way out of being fired, but it didn't work', that sort of thing. I've never heard it used in another context, but I'm mostly london-based, I can believe it means other things up'tut north or in the wilds of the south.

Fair, but I always considered the BIP to be a user guide for the self rather than a goad to change society. The problem I see with "awareness" is that it identifies symptoms and not problems.

To take the Kony thing, it singled out this one guy like he was the root of the evil of child soldiers. He's not. The evils of being human are very complex. If they weren't we'd all be living in a utopian society right now. We've had writing for about 6000 years and urban settlement for almost 10,000. If awareness were sufficient, we'd have colonists on exoplanets a long time ago.

Are you REALLY not discerning the difference between the way the word is used in the complaint and the way you just used it?

Because it appears, in context, functionally, that you just used a classic troll move.

You might not realize it. Maybe. But it was, like, blatantly explained upthread.

The author of the OP also expressed that they hated the word in the context I used it, so, your complaint, I'm afraid, is moot.

I vote we nuke every one of his posts from orbit.

Blag used to mean "get into something for free" down here. Like getting free stuff or onto a guest list for a club or gig or summat..

We used to call that swag, in the US.

"Blag".

English verb, "to rip off, rob, or steal".

Yeah, typically used online because "repost" or "share" isn't pretentious enough.

Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.

Yeah, it is annoying as shit, and scattered all over TDS2013 like Goddamn pigeon poop.

It's like a toddler with a new word. Adorable.

NEWSFLASH: It's totally OK for people to hate things other people like. It doesn't make them wrong, it just makes them different.

I have still never read the whole of the BIP. Parts of it, but not the whole thing. It isn't important to me. That's not to make light of the people who put hard work into it or for whom it IS important.

Furthermore, someone getting a personal chill of loathing when a word is used in a certain context does not invalidate all uses of that word.

Seriously, I mean, come the fuck on.

"Organic".  The most ill-used, over-hyped word in the entire history of the English language.

Yes, your veggies are organic.  If they weren't you'd BREAK YOUR FUCKING TEETH.  And now EVERYTHING is "organic".  Why?  Because it fucking SELLS SHIT.  The SAME shit as everyone ELSE is selling, but it's ORGANIC.

It occurs to me that *I* am organic.  And you should all buy me.

At least it kind of makes sense when it's related to food, because it refers to a specific process of using all-carbon-based nutrient sources and no antibiotics or hormones to grow the food, which in turn forces farmers to grow in more sanitary conditions. In Oregon it's illegal to label a food product "organic" unless it meets specific guidelines. It makes NO SENSE AT ALL related to lube, I'm like, :? what is it? Where does it come from? What does it mean? I went to some websites and found no answers there.

I really want to know what "organic" lube is. Is it basically aloe vera gel? Or vegetable oil? Why won't they tell me?

"conversation" or "discussion"

In my line of work, I'll hear these words used in very mind-numbing ways.  Like when we are in a meeting and someone says, "We need to have the conversation about how to do X".  Or you bring up an issue and someone says "Let's have that discussion". Or when it gets downright stupid and someone actually says, "Let's have a discussion about how to have that conversation".  more often than not it is just verbal punting.

No, we are talking NOW!

I also hate when my ex-wife wants to have a "discussion" about something for which she has already made up her mind and there is nothing really to discuss except how much of an immovable object she is.   :lol:

Or when "discussion" is used to describe an event where one person is talking.  For an example, an article with one author and no comments section is not a discussion.

The word that pisses me off the most?

"Whatever".

Specifically, when the message wants to convey "After mulling it over, I have no opinion positive or negative, so I abstain," but what the message means is "I don't really want to think about this, but be sure I'll have an opinion about it when someone else makes a choice."

My personal peeve with it is when it is used as a conversation-stopper.

"I disagree, but I am not going to respond."

Oh hell yes. It's used as a shutdown, and it's insulting as hell. I use it in two ways; one; directed at myself, as a way of reminding myself to let something go, and two, as a way to piss someone off, to convey that I think they're trivial.

'Solidarity' still gives me spasms after having it misused so much in high school.

That is because you refuse to show solidarity with the X people, and refuse to condemn the fascist aggression of Y people against X, which is an assault on civilization itself.  This makes you complicit in Y people's departure from universal principles of democracy and constitutes a form of appeasement.  The good intentions of X people in their intervention against Y, under the moderate leadership of Mr X, cannot be held hostage to liberal guilt, nor the conspiracy theorizing of the academic/media complex, and its false moral equivalences.  The mainstream liberal culture must understand that objectively speaking, military targets chosen in good faith still constitutes self defence and that no-one could have predicted that a school would be on top of a secret military compound.  That X people were willing to countenance a surgical strike shows the will to victory, which will deter future act of terrorism.

Any other position is simply unserious.
