Title: Me, Asylums, Roller Coasters, and You.
Post by: Dimocritus on March 25, 2010, 03:28:08 PM
Quote from: Ben Edlund "The Tick" Issue 1Bored.
Bored. Bored. Bored.
I've only been here for two months, and I'm already bored.
No unnecessary sedation, no electro-shock therapy, not even any elevator music.
This place has become confining somehow. I feel... Restrained.
And yet I sense my destiny is at hand. Things are changing and a brilliant idea has come to me.
I will leave this place.

Let's make an analogy.

Life, see, it's like this amusement park. I looked around for the most bad-ass, fastest, vomit-inducing ride I could find. You know, the type where you spin around hanging by your ankles as you get flipped through loops and plummet at the ground at a ridiculous speed only to go rocketing back up into the blue. Yeah, that one. The exciting one. Well, I waited around until I was old enough to go out into the park on my own, and I was tall enough to make it past the wooden clown cutout guarding the dangerous ride from the kiddies. I waited in line, and then, finally, I got to ride the ride.

It was awesome.

Flips, loops, a sense of danger. It was great. The highs and the lows. The lows were, in some ways, even better than the highs. The highs being a slow inclination towards the tipping point, and the lows, well, they give a new meaning to life as you drop towards the concrete at a break-neck pace. Man, I rode the fuck out of that coaster.

But then things, they seemed to get a little dull. The lows seemed not as base and the highs, well, I don't even get high anymore (trust me, I try) and now I'm wondering: what happened? Where's the excitement? The death defying thrills? What happened to my favorite ride? The answer: nothing. It just ended, and I'm that stupid mother-fucker sitting in a stopped roller-coaster car with my arms up in the air going "Whoot!" The ride didn't stop being fun, it's just over. I'm not even sure how long it's been stopped, I've been too busy trying to figure out where all the loops went.

Yeah, the ride is done. And if I don't get out of the car, I'll be stuck riding it again, and we all know it's not as good the second time around, let alone the third or fourth. It makes me wonder, though, how many laps around the same track have I taken? How long did I expect this roller-coaster to sustain me?

Anyhow, it's time to get off the ride and find something else. Maybe another ride, maybe the cotton candy stand, maybe just a bench to sit on and watch the carnies do the weird carny things they do. The thing is, I'm not really sure.

I have one semester left after this one, and after that, I start thinking about what school I'm going to transfer to, or if I'm going to continue schooling at all. Whatever I choose, it's certainly not going to be here. I need a new ride, I must leave this place.

Any suggestions?

Come to Tucson.  We have a good university, everyone is armed to the teeth, and the place is crawling in perverts.

Also, we need more musicians.  The Kenny Loggins Tribute Band just isn't cutting it.

I gotta figure out what kind of funding I can get for a four year university before I make any decisions. Plus, I need to make some cash to do the actual moving, and, once I figure out where I'm going, I'm gonna need to get hooked up somehow with a place to sleep.

I was also kind of considering Portland. I dunno why. It just seems kinda cool...

You should come with Richter and I when we finally make our pilgrimage to the desert.

However, I couldn't live there. I spent way too much time on I-10 one spring break and decided that I *like* green grass and high tides.

Soft coastal people.   :argh!:

We are a simple desert people.  We need no "vegetation" or "ocean".

I will see the desert, soon hopefully.
I like the concept of a desert.  I may be one of the desert loving English that just ended up on the wrong continent.
Maybe I'd like it too much, like Lawrence.

The desert is, if nothing else, quiet.

Also, definitely fly.  The drive from Chicago is 30 hours, if you speed like a bastard.  From Rhode Island?  You'll never make it.  You'll be set upon by CHUD in a truck stop in Indiana.

The East likes me Dok, and it does not let go easily.  I have sailed the coast, walked the forests, and nearly died on the rocks.  I was laughing the whole time.  I've gone off on foot when mortals fear to drive.  I have divested myself of the trappings of humanity to better adapts, and run (half) naked when it works better than staying clothed.  Dump me in the countryside here, and I'll build myself a life out of what's in my bag, my pockets, and my immediate area.

It knows me, and makes driving out a real pain.  Flying is the only option.

In fact. My schedule isn't really open until October. But it would have to be early October so I don't miss peak foliage.

Tucson might be a bit extreme, though not as bad as Detroit or Philly...

As for the silence, I've noticed the same thing. I leave my computer on (folding@home) and that works for noise. I think it might be a primitive reaction: when there's no noise from animals around there's something sneaking up on you.

But really, I'm not sure why exactly, but being to far away from the ocean makes me feel trapped. I'm not even a big beach goer. I just feel "safer" knowing it's there...

TBH, it smells like gas fumes a lot, especially when it's hot. When it rains, it smells funny. Probably due to this one plant we get here. You can't even notice the coyote poop.

The problem with life as a roller coaster is you don't control roller coasters.  Some glassy eyed guy in a vest jams buttons and warbles into a loudspeaker and you're launched and you stay on the track.  It's a blast, for sure, especially after it's been built up, but it's inevitable to end up where you see yourself now.

I've always tried to be careful about the idea of some other place representing salvation.  Everything will be alright if I could just move to -blank-.  I've seen Arizona, Colorado, Seattle, Chicago, New York, depending on the personality, act as the mecca.  I have a feeling that once the newness of that place wears off the same feelings will strike back up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating staying put.  I just think doing it to see something new or generally adventure is more likely to get the desired effect.  Doing it to escape one's problems means less awareness of those same problems coming up only in a different setting.

I don't think there's salvation or mecca anywhere.  Only different flavors of the strange, the DUMB, and the pretense.

There are different people too.  Depending on how many, and how well you get on with them, this counts for a lot.

Just to clarify, I'm not doing this as a form of escape. Just a change of pace. I've lived in the same town my whole life, and have done little traveling due to my low income. I know what you mean, though. Whenever someone says to me "man, I gotta get the fuck out of shitty RI," I usually say the same things you just said. I don't even know much of anything about Tuscon or Portland, or anything really, so it's not like I expect it to be some happy magical gumdrop village. Just a change of pace. Though, maybe I should take an extended vacation before actually planning a permanent move.

As far as the glassy eyed guy in the vest, well, that made me think of this (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=24547.0).

There's definitely something to be said for culture shock in moving between places.  Sounds like you haven't had that experience.  I got it just going between southeastern and western MA.  I can only imagine what a cross country move would be like.  Maybe I'll do it someday too.
