Apparently after the Iraqi government fell.

The log goes on for quite a bit after that, with some exceptional statements of idiocy, but I thought it best to spare you all the gory details.  Some highlights

Quote(11:18:41)<zerogravitytits>all that matters is having the better technology

Quote(11:21:23)<zerogravitytits>you want to know what the strategy is? draw out and kill as many 'taliban' as possible

Quote(11:23:07)<Payne>then how is the stated objective achieved?
(11:23:23)<zerogravitytits>it's already been achieved
(11:23:34)<Payne>then why are you still therE?
(11:23:41)<zerogravitytits>hell if i know
(11:23:45)<Payne>there is another objective
(11:24:12)<Payne>create a stable "democratic" state, and build a broadly "Capitalist" economy
(11:24:32)<zerogravitytits>that will happen invevitably

Quote(11:30:00)<zerogravitytits>maybe they're overstretched because they know they have unlimited troops to throw into the fray :p

This proves it, soldier training makes you stupider and less likely to think for yourself.

This proves it, being a male makes you stupider and less likely to think for yourself.

This proves it, having a music affiliated moniker makes you stupider and less likely to think for yourself.

All equally as valid as your statement.

saying it makes you stupider is, well, stupid.

however, in the context of infantry training, there's probably a kernel of truth to the "less likely to think for yourself" part.

It may be generalized to the majority, but most of the soldiers I've met are intelligent and thoughtful enough.

But any rigidly controlled hierarchy that has such strong anti-individuality memes being explicitly enforced is going to attack a person's tendency to TFY,S!

I would hazard to say that is true, within context. During military exercises, for instance; it situations where the ability to simply listen & obey without hesitation may be crucial to not only your own survival, but the survival of the whole unit.

However, the ability to listen & obey without thinking is a learned skill. If you've ever worked with one of those stupid fucks who questions every fucking thing they're asked to do, or is constantly coming up with "better" ways to do things before they even understand the process they're being asked to follow, you know exactly what I mean.

It's not a simple thing.  On the one hand, you need to follow orders, and on the other hand I've heard stories about marines getting excoriated for being "individuals", as individualistic as our society is.

I have a friend in the military who thinks the same way, and it's not like he doesn't think for himself.
What it shows me is there ought to be more emphasis and training placed on guerrilla warfare, tribal warfare, or "bush" style warfare. Not to say that old style tactical warfare wont happen again, but in 99% of "modern" conflicts the nature and therefore that tactical emphasis has radically changed.

Incorrect.  In the infantry, it is assumed that a private may wind up in command.  Individual initiative is prized and developed, unlike in the old Soviet style "ride the plan down in flames" approach.

I think I already e-primed it enough, but I would also argue that there is a difference between willingly learning a skill and being trained to have a routine response (obeying without hesitation) to a particular stimulus (orders given from a commanding officer in the field).

In my limited experience, people I know who have served in the military fall into both camps. My armchair assessment is that for people who are not predisposed to taking the "learning it as a skillset" approach, the training itself probably makes it more difficult for them to TFYS, S! in the long run.

I work a civilian job in a paramilitary organization.  Here's how it works (that I can see).

Chain of command is heavily emphasized.  Decisions and problems go to your direct supervisor, then to that person's direct supervisor, etc.  The ones who get promoted (other than having connections and doing favors, which is how the place is run) are the ones who go up the chain of command for everything.  So how it ultimately works out is you have a bunch of people in charge who have never made any decisions.  I've only been there for a year and I get lieutenants (basically #2 in my daily shift's chain of command) asking me what we're supposed to do for regular operations on weekends.

Accountability is huge here.  I mean, I work in a jail so it's understandable.  If something goes wrong it could mean an inmate completes suicide or an officer gets assaulted.  In those cases there's an investigation as to what procedure may have been altered for things to get that way.  If it's found out that the chain of command wasn't followed there's actual punishment to those that went outside of it, even if their decision was sound.  So to cover your own ass, it make sense to just defer to the higher rank.

My place is pretty fucked up though.

True story.

Aside from the ability to scrub myself clean in 5 minutes of cold water, a complete ability to be straight faced in almost any situation, and occasional Republican leanings, I think I turned out alright after 6 years of reserve drill.

It isn't managed by a huge bureaucracy...it's managed by individual Bn commanders, per doctrine.

Every once in a while the Pentagon decides it needs bluecoats all standing in neat rows.  These phases don't last very long.

I may be missing something here, but I never quite understood why having a prisoner commit suicide is  big deal. Maybe I'm factoring out the cleanup or something.

I know you do, Dok.

Yes, I do.  After all, you are seemingly advocating that any and all criminals should kill themselves, or that it would at least be no problem if they did.

LOOK AROUND YOU, FUCKWIT.  You can go to jail for damn near anything now.  You can commit a felony and never even KNOW it, let alone have ill intent.  Or you can go to jail for doing something that harms NOBODY.

Your argument is that it would be desirable for a 17 year old caught with a joint to die.

You are a truly worthless excuse for a human being, and I can only thank whatever Gods are out there that you have precisely zero chance to pass your genes on.

Accountability is huge here.  I mean, I work in a jail so it's understandable.  If something goes wrong it could mean an inmate completes suicide or an officer gets assaulted.

I may be missing something here, but I never quite understood why having a prisoner commit suicide is  big deal. Maybe I'm factoring out the cleanup or something.

WTF is wrong with you.

BEEP BOOP I AM A ROBOT WHAT IS HUMAN EMOTION

:lulz:  That is fantastic.

Enki, I don't feel any personal sense of loss, nor do I think any of the officers do, when an inmate offs his or herself.  It is pretty disturbing on their parts, perhaps not so much seeing the dead inmate, but more regularly cutting down inmates who are hanging themselves or working with them when they're bleeding severely.  So there's that part.

Mostly it's a sense of accountability and protective care.  A lot of these people are scum and belong here, but that doesn't mean they don't have families and loved ones that care about them.  It's the jail's responsibility to keep them safe from harm, both from others and from themselves.

Keep in mind, we aren't a prison.  We rarely get murder cases or anything of the sort.  It's a county jail.  They're in for assault, robbery, forgery of check, etc.

Pretty much exactly that, yeah.  Like most jails, the vast majority of our uh, clientelle, are repeat offenders, so they've been convicted of plenty of things before but not the charges on which they're currently being held.  It's actually so rare to find someone with no previous history that we usually think we've made mistakes in missing their past arraignments.  Of course, previous convictions do not mean they're guilty this time.

Not trying to defend his statement
But I am going to assume that Enki probably 1) hasn't had anyone close to him kill themselves, or struggle with the suicide of a close family member 2) Never has had an extreme life altering event which has caused him to become irrational and extremely depressed or 3) suffered clinical depression or have had some point had a mental illness in which he has lost touch with reality.

Since I already made an ass of myself ITT I might as well state that I try to defend the right to do with your life as you wish( even end it) whenever I can.
There are only two ethical reasons to restrain someone's freedom: Their actions will likely lead to other people gettting hurt or temporary factors may cause them to hurt themselves.
So the only ones who should be kept from killing themselves are those that are temporarily in a suicidal state of mind.
If a lifer/deathrowee who has exhausted all his options wants to kill himself, let him.
Restrain the rest until you have the budget for counseling or they get released.

And for fuck's sake, don't save a guy's life just so you can execute him. That's just cruel.

I'm not suggesting killing prisoners. I am just wondering why prisoner suicide is treated like a bigger deal than non-prisoner suicide.

Not to prattle endlessly about the jail, but we also have a fairly high percentage of inmates who are substance abusers.  When they come in they could be going through a nasty withdrawal to which death is a tempting alternative.  Shortly afterward they might not feel the same way.

Not to sound callous or anything, but suicide is also illegal and officers would have a legal obligation to prevent this crime from being committed so even if you wanted to ignore the humanitarian side of things this would still hold true.
