Now, even from that URL, you are probably thinking "OK, that's weird, but who really cares?"
Thing is, Palin's offspring is not moving just anywhere in Arizona, oh no. She's moving to Maricopa County. The same one Joe Apario is Sheriff of. And, if the rumours are to be believed, will become the centre of the brand new 9th congressional district due to changes in population logged by the census.
Hey, didn't Bristol Palin market herself as a "political consultant" only, like, a year ago? I'm just saying...seems mighty odd that a politically linked individual such as herself would be buying up property that far away from home, for no apparent reason.
She freaks me out.
I'm very much in favor of this. If Roger is right (and he's right terrifyingly often) then we're doomed anyway, so this should at least be entertaining.
Who knows? Maybe she'll start some shyt with Joe, and everyone will get to sit back, watch the fireworks, and laugh as the sinister underbelly of corruption and ignorance reveals itself on both sides?...
Remember what Arpaio does to those who disagree with him...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
WE GOT THE WHOLE PACKAGE!
Doesnt she have to be 25 to run?
Well, you used to have to be a natural born citizen to run for president, why not? :P
Alls I can say is, I sense an evil against evil scenario approaching. If you believe all the speculation, good 'ol Joe has a history of completely dismembering anyone who stands against him by putting them under investigation for sex offender charges and the like. It would be amusing to watch that jackass ruin himself AND the political aspirations of the Palin family, then again, I'm a sick fuck, so maybe nobody else sees it that way.
Keep in mind, Joe had one of his potential political adversaries ripped to shreds by the media with accusations of the guy trying to rape his own mother... Or maybe I read the article wrong, I don't know, it has been a while. He was being investigated for corruption last I heard, not really sure how that turned out, but the article was along the lines of "all things considered, the truth may never be known."...
Perhaps some kind of unlikely suicide will be in the works for Joe, some kind of MKULTRA defenestration technique, or chainsaw seppuku?
Why wouldn't Palin's kid and Joe get along perfectly?
I must admit, they might, but I have this strong intuition (In other words, I'm full of BS) that something is going to go horribly wrong...

Not sure what your crazy laws are, but that sounds about right.
However, establishing herself early, perhaps working for whoever gets the seat (I'm inclined to believe it will be a Republican, given what I have heard of the area) and then running against him later, with some actual experience under her belt, however little it may be....the Teabaggers are mostly useless, but if they have one vital skill it is undercutting mainstream Republican candidates in primaries, and the Teabaggers do have this strange alleigance to the Palin clan.

For the house yes, for president, no 35.
She's 20, this will give her 5 years to establish herself and then run for office. Maybe she will actually take this time to GASP get an education beyond high school. She did graduate high school right?
Where does a 20 year old get $172,000.00 cash to buy a house. I mean I had never even heard of this family until her mom was tapped to run for VP. Now a great portion of the US thinks she hung and set the moon.
I keep wanting to ask, how can you elect someone for president when the last elected posotion they held they quit mid term?
I mean what if she gets tired of being president?

Holy Shit.
But this is how politicians make their millions, after all, unless they were born into it or have a lucrative business interest on the side. They SELL themselves. Former presidents do it, congresspeople drummed out of their parties do it, even freshman legislators do it...they all sell themselves to the highest bidders for cash. This is not shocking, except perhaps the blatant enormity of what The PalinTM has been able to rake in during landmark economic downturn times.

No. But I'd like to see them try. :lulz:
She doesn't LIVE like this, mind you. This is just when she thinks she's on the righteous side of things. My poor mother's a little mixed up in the head, see. All this was sooo much easier to stick to when she was rich and shopped at Nordstroms for a living. Now, as a drudge, wife of an ex-con, yeah, not so easy.
But I'm telling you, what she's screaming about is pretty much what the white, middle-class die-hard Protestants are up in arms about. The HEART Palin and her famdamily. They feel like they finally have one of their OWN in there, shaking it up and making it right. It's rather disgusting.
...besides, the oldest trick in the book for the Protestants I know when you bring up Revelations is that it's actually "allegorical." Convenient argument is convenient.

:lulz: Nah, wouldn't work. She's smarter than that, A, and B, not sure I could do that with conviction.
I just don't talk to her about politics and religion. Last night was a fluke I blame my husband for. He loves riling them up and getting them going, even if it's a bit on the futile side. Wish he'd do more of that to his own mother, but she's so ignorant, as in literally not figuratively, it's really no sport for him anymore.

The teabaggers are here to stay, for at least another 10 years.
I was reading a Mother Jones article (http://motherjones.com/politics/2010/11/tea-party-civil-war), which talked about cracks already appearing in the facade (arguably, that's wishful thinking on their part). I haven't finished it yet because I'm distractable, but the coalition, is, from what I've heard, kind of held together with scotts tape.

Well, if the tea party had any sort of actual platform... it would be pretty libertarian leaning. Sadly, there's no consistency, philosophy or ... well actual thought behind most of what passes as the Tea Party.
Which is probably why its doing so well... actually thinking about things like political philosophy is far too difficult for Americans. Much easier to stand around posing for Jebus and Country.
:teabagger1:
You don't really need to know the actual philosophy to steal the name. A vague idea is all you need to do it.
Political philosophy is overrated. "Don't act like a dick" is a perfectly acceptable replacement, given socially recognized and agreed upon definitions of being a dick.
Sometimes one MUST act like a dick. Machiavelli was really big on this notion, and I'm sure he wasn't the first. If one must act like a dick to someone, they must be such a dick that the person to whom they are being a dick to may never seek retribution.
Except
a) you're not the ruler of a country, and
b) Machiavelli wasn't writing political philosophy, he was writing an empirical argument based on observation and history, two fields which 99% of philosophy is only slightly acquainted with at the best of times.
:troll: that's so a Team America reference
a) While I think it most likely it did appear in "the Prince", I also have this strange memory of it being in "the Discourses", if this is true, then the advice was not meant merely for the "ruler" of a country, but for a republic as well. Great, now I wish i still had the book so i could double check that before making myself sound like more of a tard... I always thought it to mean "Only be a dick when absolutely necessary", by conveying just how much work one would have to put into being a huge dick and how heavy a blow might be landed upon one's conscience, but I'm likely reading too much into that.
b) True, true... Though I recall reading something somewhere about that Titus Livy guy having embellished his account of history, this very account being the source of much of Machiavelli's material (In fact, I think the full title of "the Discourses" is "Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livy, if this wikipedia article has any truth to it). IMO that doesn't make it invalid, Machiavelli also had a lot of life experiences to back those thoughts up, he wasn't just some nerdy bookworm...
Back to point A, yeah, I'm not completely sure whether it was meant to apply to a republic, a "prince", or both. I always took it, again, as a damn good reason not to be a dick, because if you're going to go that route, you have to go all the way, passing a law is essentially telling a bunch of thugs to go use their guns (or spears, swords) on people who don't think like you do, which makes it pretty serious business...

The other thing is, Joe Arpaio is Doing It Wrong... Though his actions seem to embody the concept, I think he missed the point somewhere. This happens a lot with Machiavelli, most people read "the Prince" and stop, which is why the term "Machiavellian" is so far off base.

Yes, I suppose I did. I couldn't help myself. I figured "when in Rome", and my own immature sense of humor took over... It didn't start THERE, though, it started here.

I've mentioned it before. Comparing pre-modern literature to current politics is useless. There are similarities, but today's technology makes it almost all irrelevant.
...Plus, Machiavelli wrote The Prince as a joke.

Suu, at first I thought your statement that "the Prince" was written as a joke was a load of crap, but reading down to the bottom of the article about the possibility of it being satire swayed me a bit. Still, it's all speculation, as I'm not aware of Machiavelli having said anything on the matter, and if Machiavelli never said it himself, it probably isn't appropriate to be stated as fact... However, if he did say such a thing, that sort of blows my argument to shyt. (this is one of the many instances where some of that there book learnin' might do me a bit of good, but... Sigh.)
As far as Machiavelli not being up to date, this is true. People don't go to war with catapults, horses, swords and spears anymore, but neglecting the human dynamic present in the works is to disavow "technology" that hasn't changed all that greatly on a basic level. It would be like arguing that "The Art of War" or "The Book of Five Rings" are no longer applicable. While the human brain has been thought by some to have evolved over the years, the basic instincts have not changed quite so much as the thought patterns (citation needed?). It is not irrelevant, it is extremely dated, however, and I understand that it should not be the ONLY thing one reads. Modern technology changes a lot. If you can point me in the direction of a few things completely relevant, I will be grateful... Also, I need to expand beyond three books on strategy someday (too skeptical of ninja books to count those), well, when the resources are present, I'll do so.
Charley Brown, I am not a student in the sense that I go to school, though I do read a lot of stuff, not sayin' that qualifies me to run off at the mouth as I usually do.
Note that I am not criticizing people for going to college. I must admit that those who do are often much more disciplined than I could hope to be, and, in many cases, know more interesting stuff than I could shake a stick at. This alone does not invalidate my view either, but I can see how it takes a huge step in that direction. I am also aware that many members of this forum are more intelligent than I, though I'm not about to jump to the conclusion that this always makes them always right.
I was, likely, wrong to say Arpaio is Doing It Wrong, this was opinion, and we know what they say about those. I just find it hard to think that there is anything right about what such a scumbag does, which means I'm a bit biased.
And Cain, I was not trying to slobber shit on you. I've read a number of your posts and have found them quite insightful, and I'm pretty well convinced that you have a firmer grasp on almost any subject matter than I could hope to have. Again, this does not mean I won't say something if I do not necessarily agree with what you say, but that I will try to keep it to a minimum. This could be taken as flame bait, or a request for more input relating to specific issues I've brought up (or any number of ways, really). I understand that you may answer those any way you like, but I'd prefer the latter.
Roger, I enjoy your replies and hope for more in the future. And a script? How so?
Glittersnatch, I don't personally have any problem with Roger. I cannot answer for Roger, however, I would like to think that this is just what he does for fun, though what I would like to think and what is true are usually completely different things... For all I know, he could really be the jerk that he sometimes appears to be in text format.
There are many ways to learn, but there are so few sources worthy of trust. For this reason, a person should test the water before jumping in. Please do not mistake a friendly poke for an attack.
The Prince was a really long job application.
I might also add that he didnt get the job.
^That makes more sense to me than it being a joke, still, it could have been.
But considering who it was addressed to, and the state of Italy at the time, not to mention Machiavelli's background, it being written as a back-handed job application makes even more sense.

This is true, but he also recognized that Florence would be in deep shit if it had a weak government (what was it? I love the republic, but I love Florence more, or something?). There were many external threats. It is possible he wrote the prince as a genuine bit of advice to help the Medici keep things under control, considering the possibilities for Florence were he to try and undermine them... Or at least, that's what I remember reading somewhere.
Yeah, I know I read somewhere that he wasn't a big fan of the Medici. But I must admit, ya'll have a good point there.
And no, Suu, I'm not too proud of that. It hurts that it was necessary, but I think I did the right thing.

If Tuscany got too weak, then you had the Papal States to the South and the Republic of Venice to the East that would have snatched it up, that and Spain and France. Florence needed to stay neutral. Unfortunately, there was no royalty or hierarchy, so to speak...the merchant aristocracy were becoming more powerful than the landed gentry, and it was getting unstable. There weren't politicians, they were common people who came into a lot of money and used it to their advantage. That doesn't mean they were good at what they did. It was extremely corrupt and dangerous.

Not saying they were good, Suu... Just that more political upheaval would not have served Machiavelli or anyone else very well. Still, I think it's safe to say you have a better understanding than I do. I will admit that your take on the matter is possible, and that I have been somewhat swayed, but I'm going to assume Machiavelli was telling the truth, as foolish as that may be, considering the questionable behavior he seems to advocate in his writing.
He was totally telling the truth, but he was being tongue-in-cheek as well.

That's a common problem, even among people who know better. It's a trap...You train yourself to spot poor or spurious logic in the world around you, but not so much in yourself.
This is true, Roger... I'm usually pretty tough on myself, compared to others (although, sometimes it takes a minute for that to kick in), but I still find myself slipping a lot.

In fact, many considered Machiavelli
outlandish.
But yeah, the whole "being tortured by the Medicis" thing probably didn't endear him to them. Also being "the most noted satirical playwright in Florence" in addition to his other talents, might have suggested a degree of caution was necessary when quoting his work.
But then again, politicial scientists and IR scholars never had much of a sense of history, as a rule.
I tried to read one of those plays he wrote, "Mandragola" or something. Maybe it was good, and my taste is poor, but I thought it was just kind of, ugh. I need to go back and try to read it again someday.
Any other books on political theory, political science, or history you people (what does he mean by "you people"?) would recommend? I usually track down books based on the recommendations of friends or interesting strangers over the internet, it's worked rather ok so far.
