So, what happens if the rapture doesn't happen on May 21, 2011? Dos this mean they all turn in their Christian cards and become rabid atheists?
I sincerely hope so. But no doubt if it does not end, it will mean God has changed his mind. Fickle bastard.

It means that they'll believe they weren't saved, and we could have some riots or mass Evangelical suicides on our hands.

Unfortunately, as much as I'd like that to happen, I think they'll just come up with some stupid excuse like 'opps, we read it backwards, it's meant to be 11/02, 2105."
i actually saw one of these folks out in the wild...
i was on a source inspection at one of our vendors and saw a bumper sticker for them.
lady who owned the truck seemed 'normal' enough, so it was kind of strange knowing that the person you're talking to really believes that the end is nigh.

Your first mistake is to assume that 'normal' means 'not fucking insane'.
oh no.
i've made no such assumption. i'm of the opinion that every person on this planet is batshit crazy in one way or another, and the only ones that freak me out are the ones for which i can't determine their particular psychosis.
Is that the day they storm town halls again?

Ah, in that case, we are of the same mind.
Why are some Christians so keen on the End Times? Does anyone know if there's an actual psychological profile behind it? I know being any sort of Protestant other than a Lutheran or a Unitarian automatically makes you a little more crazy than others by default, but what's going on here?

it's only two days before 5/23
I, for one, am excited!
Quote...the date of the rapture of believers will take place on May 21, 2011 and that God will destroy this world on October 21, 2011.

Even better, if this goes down all the hardcore atheists will either have to eat their words or get even crazier. Really if the world has to end this is the way to do it.

Doesn't matter, I will have no friends in Heaven.
There used to be a site up dedicated to taking care of the pets of people who are taken up in the rapture, after the rapture takes place. It always amused me, but now I can't seem to find the site. If its gone, we should start it back up.

Humanity has always dealt with its insignificance by casting itself as the grand cosmic centerpiece, religiously or otherwise. Hell; in The Grand Design, Stephen Hawking (not a big theist, you may know) remarks that we are in some ways the "lords of creation".

Makes sense
We thought we were the only tribe. Then we found other tribes.
We thought we were the only race. We found other races.
We thought our world was the center of creation. We discovered heliocentrism.
We thought our system was the only one. We found exoplanets orbiting stars. We found other galaxies.
Now we theorize the existence of other universes with different parameters in M-Theory.
All this we have found, all at the expense of our place of pride as the focal point of all reality.
Yet we persist in believing in omnipotent personal benefactors.
We are exactly that stupid.
I reeeeally hope they come through here, with their RV caravans. We have two super crazy churches here and I bet they'd come out in force to join them, which would be funny. One of them broke away from the other because they were 'too liberal' and I have no doubt fighting would break out.

I like the quote by Sagan even more.
QuoteIn some respects, science has far surpassed religion in delivering awe. How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, "This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed"? Instead they say, "No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way."
Which is why I will answer, if anyone talks to me about creationism or any other religious claim, "The universe is much greater than these small notions." And leave it at that.
