According to Bill Orielly the fact that the tides go in and out is both an inexplicable mystery and undeniable proof of God.

To be more specific:
QuoteExplaining that his religious faith springs from the mysteries of nature that are unexplainable by modern science, O'Reilly said: ""I'll tell you why [religion is] not a scam, in my opinion. Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that. You can't explain why the tide goes in."
Even more amazing than Bill O'Reilly not knowing that the tides are caused by the moon's orbit is the fact that the atheist guy didn't know it either! Silverstein was left to retort, "It doesn't matter if I can't explain it—that doesn't mean that an invisible magic man in the sky is doing it," his high school science (or was it middle school?) apparently failing him.

Bad. If you're going to believe in science, you better know wtf is going on.
I hope John Stewart does something with this. I mean I suppose it satirizes itself as is but man, that is just sad.
Silverman also says "Maybe it was Thor on top of Mount Olympus?" in regards to the tide going in and out. I really want to believe that is an intentional miss-attributed troll, but after his lack of high school physics, I somehow doubt it.

I find, for the most part, when Bill O brings on guests, particularly ones he disagrees with, he doesn't exactly pick the brightest of the bunch. John Stewart is a notable exception, but of course in those cases he has the luxury of doing a pre-taped show that can be edited.

Certainly not... but perhaps American Atheists should hire a spokesperson who actually does have a rudimentary grasp of scientific knowledge before parading them across all national networks so they don't look, y'know, as stupid as the people they are mocking.
I'm not a fan of American Atheists as an organization. It just seems like their very argumentative and almost militant, and they go to great lengths to shove their opinion down everyone's throat. They're essentially mirroring evangelists, which is my opinion is the wrong tactic.
I'm totally down with people being atheists, and I'm especially down with anyone who makes Bill O look like a total moron on the air, but you need to be really prepared to go live with ANYTHING. Sure, it could have been the pressure of being there causing a brain fart, but COME ON.

I think that's the main problem.
Yeah, douchitude can be entertaining, but it's not very effective in changing minds.
Plus, it's not just about beliefs, it's also about tradition. I imagine that a good chunk of theists don't feel particularly strongly about their convictions, but it helps create a sense of community/family bonding or what have you. My uncle is "Catholic" but he really couldn't care about going to Mass or anything.
ETA: What I mean is, attacking the religious belief also attacks the traditions associated with it. I find myself defending Catholicism every so often, and describing the priesthood as NAMBLA annoys the hell out of me, even though I haven't been Catholic myself in 13 years.

Fox heavily edits the O'Reilly show anyway, and you know this probably gets a treatment by the White House as well. It's probably going to be 10 minutes of bullshit. Well, I guess it would've been that anyway.

"Freedom of the Press".
Obama's Goldilocks Syndome has become pathological by this point. Even if Fox are part of the designated opposition, he has to make a show of sampling their goods before rejecting them for a more centrist tasting meal. Whereas, you know, a rational adult would tell Fox to go piss blood and find a suitably pliant (or, if this was the message he wished to convey, faux-anti establishment journalist) and stand a greater chance of saying what they wanted and conveying a message of being open to the press/willing to answer critics.

And there is that Catholic crank you Yanks have, who keeps getting into the media all the time by being morally outraged over stupid shit.
And even if it is a large organization, atheists politick like everyone else. He may just be really, really good at organizing membership rolls and chairing meetings.
That Catholic guy is really funny, I guess he doesn't realize the Catholics already have a spokesperson... and that spokesperson has a funny hat and a glass bulletproof car.
I'm sure you're right Cain, the American Atheists is probably the same sort of thing, the only place I ever see Silverman is on Fox News.
Rent-an-atheist.

I'm assuming everyone's seen the report that Obama will be granting an interview with O'Reilly to be aired on SuperBowl Sunday?

I wonder how its going to go down.
I think it will be similar to the interview he did with Bill O when he was campaigning. Except this time the interview will go through two filters. The Fox News editing room and I imagine the White House probably gets a crack at it too. It won't really accomplish anything as most Fox News viewers have their minds made up when it comes to Obama. Nothing he can say will change their mind. Especially since Bill O will spend his whole show on Monday picking the interview apart with his assortment of charaters: Dick Morris, Laura Ingraham, Karl Rove, etc., etc.,
So in the end I guess it's basically a ratings stunt for Fox News and then Obama gets to say he's been on Fox News as President. I won't be wasting my time with it. I'd rather watch the endless replays of the Puppy Bowl.

Doesn't matter to me. I'm just pissed our first black Prez would be such a fucking tool.
I mean, c'mon. Seriously?
Stop and seriously think about this. Non-tools do not get national platforms to potentially win that office. Ever.

This, absolutely this.
Obama is no worse a tool than most of our presidents.

Black Presidents are still Presidents.
Presidents aren't commanders. The presidency is only as powerful as congress and public opinion will let it be.
