Title: This thread is now an A Dance With Dragons Spoiler thread.
Post by: Disco Pickle on April 17, 2011, 07:27:46 PM
Thread.

anyone doing a party?  I've come to terms with just how much of a fucking dork I am for planning one, but I have good company, so it'll be a house full of dorks.  and my GF, who hasn't read the damn thing yet.  The rest of us have.  She'll just have to suffer.

One of my friends suggested we do it Rocky Horror style and dress up, but only if he gets to be Daenerys.   :lulz:

Thought I'd pass on that if any of you spags is in to it and wants to watch it but don't have HBO, my cable company was offering 3 months free when I called to ask about it a week ago.  I don't usually watch enough tv to justify the price, but free is nice.

So here's how you do it, from an old cable company call center rep:  call em up, ask if they can give you a 3 month sampler of HBO.  If they say no, tell em fine, you're just going to cancel and go with (insert major dish network co), be adamant.  They SHOULD send you to the retention dept, where they have more tools available to keep you as a customer.  tell them you want HBO free for the next three months and you'll keep your regular service.  Be nice to the person and they'll likely give you whatever you want, because that's how they bonus.

9 o'clock eastern you fucks.  and it repeats every hour until midnight.

A Game of Thrones is this book series that the writer has written over the past 20 years or so (with only 3 or 4 books) and still hasn't finished.  Now they're turning it into a TV series.

yeah, its been stretched the hell out, and we really should have gotten a Dance with Dragons by now, but he's got two more books planned after it and so I'm ok waiting.  HBO does good work so I expect they'll do this story the right way.

If you haven't read it Nigel, I highly recommend it.  It really is a very good series.

I don't actually own a television now, but I will probably look into finding some way to watch this.

Free HBO weekend on DirecTV, so I'll be watching this at work.  The following week I'll catch it on DVR at a family member's place, then I have Sundays off for two months.  So I'm set watching it for the foreseeable future.

I don't have any TV service, but that's never stopped me before.

The books are worth reading, though he takes forever to get each one out. They're more politics/murder/intrigue than stereotypical swords and sorcery fantasy. Lots of backstabbing. AFAIK, the War of the Roses was a big inspiration for the story.

Oh, I think I know this one. It's a series Space Cowboy is obsessed with... I started to read the first one, and it made me cry, and then we broke up and I couldn't finish it because of sentimental attachment.

Maybe I will give it another shot at some point when I have less stuff going on... right now I'm having a midlife crisis that involves changing everything about who I am, so I don't have too much time for reading ATM.

Fur trim, big fuck-off swords, and lots if tits. Can't make heads or tails of anyone but the most obvious characters, but I'll keep watching, and get his books after I finish The Hunger Games.

It did feel a bit rushed, between all the characters.  They covered quite a bit of ground with the first episode though, so I feel like it might allow for some time for the more intense moments as the season goes on.

Also, Daenerys.   :fap: :fap:

Yeah, that's why I'm watching the replay. They're really front-loading this thing to try to get all these plot hooks into the first episode.

there's a LOT of story to tell and lay down.  It's all meat as far as I'm concerned and I feel they could drag just the first book out for two years if they did it right.  It did feel a bit rushed, but I was happy with it as a first episode.

also, daenerys..    :fap:

hell, for that matter, caetlyn and cerci too.

I haven't watched it but I did notice it stars Boromir, I mean Sean Bean.  Seems like a role that really plays to his strengths as an actor.  But, I don't haz HBO.

It was good.  I had to chase it around HBO because I got home too late to watch it direct from the first Eastern time feed, but once I was able to settle down and watch it, I was happy.

Better written than Twilight, darker and grittier than Harry Potter.  But it's still YA material-- I read it at the gym, so I don't have to pay full attention to it like I do to the Overcoming Bias/Less Wrong sequences.

I see Sean Bean and think Boromir. Fuck it.

I also don't have a TV, and I'm missing the Borgias, which, IMO, is far superior, because real life is better than fantasy. Plus, you just can't write fiction like the shit that happens in history, it's too weird.

cool.  The dude who let us borrow it hadn't read it yet.

Yes, I'm THAT kind of mother: "Here kid, this will entertain you--have NO idea what you're reading, but eh, it'll keep you occupied..."

Spartacus is brilliant, but the costumes are...well, Hollywood.

The Tudors made me nauseous.

The Borgias as from what Showtime is going by is written from the account that Machiavelli wrote about them, which is nastily biased in favor of the Medicis. Plus, the Borgias were also not Italian, they were a Catalan family that came in and gained power rapidly, so they were already not liked.

Yeah, they've gone over the "Not Italian" thing.  It's just not... engaging, or something.  I'd also like to see Jeremy Irons camp it up a bit more.

It's coming.

The man was known and noted for his very public fornication and illegitimate children.

Oh, and before you all get disappointed, that is NOT the Lucretia with the poison ring. That is a later grandchild of Rodrigo. So when the entire series goes and she doesn't poison anyone, don't bitch.

...However, if she DOES poison someone, I'mma gonna rain sulfur on Hollywood.

To be honest, it's not dramatic enough to be a good art film, not smutty enough to be a good porno, and not archly self-aware enough to be good camp.  It sort of falls somewhere in the middle, and goes entirely flaccid by the end.

Same here.  If they can comprehend the words, even if they need a dictionary for assistance, I say let them read it.

Except maybe Anita Blake.  She's worse than Stephanie Meyer, and I wasn't sure that was possible.

And for escape fiction there is a lot worse out there.  I would read Laurell Hamilton long before I read Meyer.  At least she's upfront with her bullshit.  Besides they are all set in St. Louis which is a kick for me to know exactly where she is talking about.

Be that as it may, I have always said I didn't give a shit if my kds were reading playboy as long as they were reading.

My oldest got caught up in the Cirque du Freak series, now he's a big King fan.  It's fun for me, him reading King's old stuff and enjoying it.  My middle child reads anything and everything sports related.  My daughter has moved on from the little girl books, "Little House" and such to a Sherrilyn Kenyon book from her Chronicles of Nick.  Seems to be a teenage version or break in to her Dark Hunter/Were Hunter/Dream Hunter stuff...

I don't care as long as they are reading.

Heh.  My brother used to call me to ask if he should let his daughter read stuff.  HE wouldn't read it, but he knew I would.  (This is why I've read the whole damned Twilight series.  Answer:  It'll rot her brain, but there's not much you'll have to answer questions about.)

Hm, if I had kids, I'd rather have them read Twilight than have them read nothing at all, though. Sure it might be supernatural angsty emo crap, but reading shit does wonders for one's literacy, right? Even if it's bad fantasy stories.

Yep.  Of course, I gave her a set of the Narnia books when she was still in the cradle...

Same here.  If they can comprehend the words, even if they need a dictionary for assistance, I say let them read it.

Except maybe Anita Blake.  She's worse than Stephanie Meyer, and I wasn't sure that was possible.

If they want to read, let them read.  Always.

Though the book of Dad's I got ahold of when I was a kid...  I didn't need a vivid depiction of a guy getting his junk bitten off by a chick with steel dentures.  That's stuck with me.

(No, I don't remember the title, or the author, just that Mom saw what I was reading and freaked out at Dad, and made him rearrange all the books so I could find the "approved" ones.)

There's actually a shockingly small amount of yiffing for books where every third person in the setting has a hybrid were-form. There's so much sex that calling it excessive is an understatement, but I can only remember two, maybe three instances of yiffing, at least in the ones I read before I found the Dresden Files and never looked back.

But I suppose for most people any yiffing is too much.

I don't censor my kids reading at all... I figure, there's not much trouble they can get into with literature. I read Stranger in a Strange Land when I was six and it didn't damage me.

I'm right there with ya, Nigel.  I read basically whatever the fuck I wanted at 13 and older...and younger than that, it was just anything in the house as fair game.  So, my kids basically have no censorship on their reading.  Internet, yes, movies, yes...and even that's going by the wayside as the youngest heads into jr. high.

Damn.  My kids are old now, too.  :lulz:  My oldest goes to 9th grade this fall.  I'm too young to be this old! :x

I see Sean Bean and think Boromir. Fuck it.

I also don't have a TV, and I'm missing the Borgias, which, IMO, is far superior, because real life is better than fantasy. Plus, you just can't write fiction like the shit that happens in history, it's too weird.

A Song of Ice and Fire is basically The War of the Roses with dragons anyway.  Jaime and Cersei Lannister are ersatz Borgias and...well, if you know the history of the Medici involvement in loans for the war, the involvement of the Iron Bank of Braavos, with Braavos being in the in-world equivalent of Italy, takes on a potentially interesting future dimension.

Most amusing was a review for Slate, which seemed to assume all the sex was put into the show to appeal to a female demographic.  Yeah, because there was totally no rape and incest and general sleeping around in the series before HBO got their hands on it, hell no.

I saw that but didn't get the reference as I've never seen the show.   :|  I don't watch stuff like that.  A friend of mine rented the "I Spit On Your Grave" movie and I ended up leaving the room until it was over.  It's not a turn on for me personally.

apparently there's quite the stink on review sites (comments mostly) about the killing of the dire wolf last night.  Assuming it makes it to Storm of Swords, and the red wedding, they're going to be in for an even bigger shock, if HBO even decides to include what happens to Rob and his wolf.  It would be a bit over the top, considering how those two chapters ended.

I thought it was a damn good followup that let them get quite a few plot points out in the open, but I'm not sure 10 episodes for the year will really be enough to get it all out in the way I would want it.  I actually started rereading the first book last week, just to refresh my memory.  It's just as good the second time around.

2nd episode - huge improvement in pacing.  Less rushed, more suspenseful.

If anyone thought what happened to Lady was bad they should probably just stop watching the series.  That's about as mild as it gets.

Christ.  Just wait to the flashback scenes of what Gregor did to Aegon and Elia Martell (for those who didn't read the books, or cant remember: he dashed the infant Aegon's head against a wall to kill him, then raped Elia, with the brains of Aegor on his hands, before murdering her).  Or in fact any scene involving Gregor, pretty much.  That man is a walking crime against humanity.  Between him and Amory Lorch, there is going to be a lot of screeching on the internets.

SPOILERS HO!  Probably not necessary at this point, but nonetheless.

They aren't too afraid of gore.  The shot after Bran's wolf tore out a dude's throat was pretty gruesome.

Showing Gregor killing an infant might be a bit far, though.  My guess is that his complete monster tendencies will be spoken about but not shown.  Speaking of which, is anyone else relieved about his character's current alluded-to state.  I mean, he might be an unstoppable giant Frankenclegane, but him being controlled as such would eliminate his more awful tendencies as being, well, an infant killer and rapist.

I don't think they should tone him down at all.  That's what made him who he was.  Doing an off camera sound of him killing Aegon while Elia watches would probably be in better taste, but I think that particular part of his character building is absolutely necessary..  you're supposed to HATE this guy.  No better way than being a baby killing monster.

I lean toward keeping in the bad shit especially, because part of what endeared me to the story was that he had no problem killing off a character you spent an entire book getting to know, and he'd do it in a way that made me have to put the book down for a second and say "what the FUCK!"

holy shitfuck catching up here after a week is time consuming.  Since I'm getting hit with a bunch of backed up work and don't have time at the moment to sift through all of the content I missed, I figured I'd bump this until I can.

Got to do back to back GoT episodes last night to catch the one I missed.  I think they're pretty much to the point where you have to have read the books to be able to keep up with all of the characters that have been introduced.  Jumping back and forth from King's Landing to Winterfell to the Wall to the Targaryens was easier when you could thumb through the index to remind yourself who was part of which family and house.

They finally introduced Gregor last night, though only in armor.  The guy they found to play him really is a fucking mountain.  While I can understand giving the story of what he did to Sandor to Petyer, in order to cement in the mind of the viewer just how monsterous this guy is AS he's introduced, rather than later, I still think it takes away from the humanization of Sandor's character and the dynamic that is built between he and Sansa that really gets fleshed out in the siege of King's Landing.  But that's just me monday morning quarterbacking the screen writers' adaptation.  All in all, I have very few to no complaints about how it's coming together.

So far, Tyrion and Arya really are proving to be cast well, and remain my favorite characters.  I initially thought that Allister Thorne might have been badly cast, but after his second and third scene in the episode I've changed my mind on that.

I did finish rereading the first book on my vacation and fell in love all over again.  They really do have their hands full cramming everything that occurs in that book into 10 episodes.

Tyrion and Arya are brilliant.  Jaime too was very well chosen, IMO.

My main worry is Catelyn Stark.  I don't know if it is the actress, the script or a combination of the two, but she is a much weaker character thus far than she was in the books.  Maybe she'll show more steel later on, but right now she's coming across as a more sane version of her sister.

That's interesting.

I feel like a lot of Catelyn's character is a show of strength to the outside world, but then a lot of doubt and sorrow and fear.  It was like 90% of her chapters were about her dear Ned and Bran and how she'd lost them and feared losing Robb too.  I'm wondering if they're playing down her outward sensibility in the show if only because it's hard to describe her many, many periods of inner weakness.

I was a bit disappointed that they left out what she said to Jon Snow, though, as he was saying goodbye to Bran.  It's a brutal line, and actually one that I never forgave her for even as she proved herself a continuously intelligent and gracious character.  I can see why they left it out, because the show is going to lack the complexities of a lot of them (such as Baelish telling The Hound's story).

I would agree that later on, a lot of it was a show and the loss of Bran and Ned affected her deeply, but even earlier on there were hints at being a somewhat formidable character - like suggesting Ned become the King's Hand to investigate Arryn's assassination, or freeing Jaime Lannister.  For me, I cannot currently see her character as the same person seen post-Red Wedding, stringing up soldiers.  But perhaps that will change.  I'll see how she handles Tyrion's trial by combat.

I'm on the fence with Catelyn.  Like EoC said, a lot of her chapters was her internal monologue about Ned, watching Robb become King in the North and how it makes her feel.  I'm looking forward to their trek to the Eyrie and the clusterfuck her sister makes of it, but I did always think of Catelyn as being silently strong more than outwardly.  They will definitely have to work in her confrontation with Frey that allows Robb to cross at the twins.  I expect they'll show her outward strength in that scene.

Yeah, but that was her breaking point.  She went completely bat shit seeing what happened at the wedding.  She thought she had lost everyone.  I like that he hasn't really fleshed out what the hell was going on with Beric and the priest, and then her.  I'm looking forward to what the hell all of that is about and where it fits into the rest of the world.

Right now, I kind of like how (since I never read the books) reading this is like having brief, incomprehensible glimpses into upcoming episodes.

But I'll probably suck it up and start reading them, eventually.

You should probably stop reading even the little hints we have in here.  Those books have an 'OOHHH FUUUUUUCK' moment every few chapters and it'd suck to have those ruined by our dumb asses.

yeah, I'm trying to at least be vague about it, or only talk about the last episode and hints at what should happen in the next.

you should really pick up the books LMNO.  If you're liking the series, you'll tear right through the first one and be all caught up, depending on how fast you read.

Finally caught episode 4 this morning.

What is it with these series and throat gore?  I thought Bran's wolf killing the dude was intense, Gregor's attack had BLOOD SPIT BUBBLES!

The series is at an even 50/50 for me.  Episodes 1 and 3 were not great, but 2 and 4 were awesome.

The scene in the inn where Catelyn arrests the Imp was done very, very well.

I can't be absolutely sure, even having just finished the first one again, but wasn't Jamie supposed to have slit Aerys's throat, not have stabbed him in the back?

so I'm about 250 pages into book 2 for the second time and realized that the outward strength attributed to Catelyn didn't really begin to show until this book.  She had to change from being a mother to being a mother and her son's adviser, yet still try and do all she could for her daughters.

SPOLIERS BELOW

So more throat and animal gore, more sex from behind and obligatory HBO full frontal male nudity, a blowjob in an overt homosexual relationship that was only ever hinted in the books, humanizing Cerci's feelings about Robert and their marriage.  That was probably the part that made me  :argh!:

Other than helping cement the reasoning behind Loras's disposition in later books, I don't think changing the way Martin portrayed Renly's and Loras's relationship serves much purpose.

And Cerci's fabricated scene with Robert felt like it was some how supposed to give you the feeling that things would be different and she wouldn't do what she's about to do had he just loved her, which is bullshit IMO.

I know it was only implied in the books, but I'm fairly sure Martin is on the record as saying yes, they were having knightly buttsex on a regular basis, or words to that effect.  They didn't have to make explicit, true, but it was HBO so the chances of it not happening were fairly low.

And I am fairly sure later on in the series, when we get a Cersei POV chapter (or maybe it was with Jaime, its been three years since I read the books) that Robert did treat her pretty terribly, as far as she was concerned.  Which isn't exactly hard to believe, what with his constant womanizing and bouts of anger.  And I'm pretty sure her memories of their first time in bed read more like a rape.  Of course, it probably still would've gone down the same way, especially with all the other scheming that was going on, but his treatment of her definitely made things easier, when push came to shove.

anyone who couldn't pick out that Renly and Loras were polishing each other's swords wasn't paying attention.  But like you said, it is HBO so..

The thing about the Cerci and Robert scene was it also had her mentioning losing their first child when she clearly said that she "had it taken care of" in the books.

I much prefer my raw hatred of her I took from the books than the feelings of sympathy they're trying to build in the viewer.

Well, that is Martin for you.  By book three he has you feeling sympathy for someone who tried to kill a child and almost cheering on the mastermind of the War of the Five Kings.  His characters are either complete monsters, in the mold of Gregor and Amory, or complex three dimensional people who sometimes do good things, sometimes do bad things, often act in their own interests but are not complete sociopaths.

4 episodes to go.  I know that this week's episode has been available since last Sunday and it took all of my self control not to watch it before today.  I guess they figured with it being Memorial Day weekend in the States that weekend ratings would be in the crapper anyway, might as well get some ad revenue from people DLding from their site.  A fair and smart assumption IMO.

SO Viserys has been "crowned" and they did a damn good job with that scene.  Considering how much they still have to pack into 4 hours, I'm expecting another big ending tonight.  They have to work in Drogo, Ned and Jaimie, which is quite a bit of meat to prep for A Clash of Kings.

I haven't checked yet to see how many episodes they're planning for next season, but it's got to be more than 10 considering how much happens in THAT book.   Just finishing it up now and man, he did a damn good job of making Stannis a driving character, and Theon's tragedy will play out nicely considering the foreshadowing they're giving him in the series.  More than Martin gave us in the first book.

Cercei..  fucking Cercei.  I love to hate her and yet, would any mother, given the circumstances, do anything different?

Done for now.

Still downloading this episode, so not commenting, or even reading, the above posts.

However, I would just like to say: hahahaha Viserys finally got his crown last episode.  He and Joffrey are perfect for their roles - before they even spoke they had that look about them that meant you wanted to punch them in the face.  I suspect a lot of people who might get upset by the Red Wedding will enjoy the final episodes of the third season, oh yes...

Also, wtf, Jerome from Robson and Jerome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robson_%26_Jerome) is playing Bronn.  Plays it well though, so far.  He looks a competent, uncaring badass.

Also also, the Borgias has finished its first season.  Which is a shame, as I was really enjoying the performance by Michel Muller (Charles VIII).  He stole pretty much every scene he was in, except those with Holliday Grainger (Lucrezia).  And possibly the entry into Florence, with Julian Bleach (Machiavelli).  The rest of the cast, excluding Jeremy Irons, are fairly pants.

Yeah, especially for Book 3 I can see that being tricky.  Doable...but not easy by any means.

On the other hand, 10 episodes can be recorded fairly quickly, by TV standards, so this puts a fire under Martin's arse to get on with the books (A Dance With Dragons has an official release date, again, but I wont be surprised if it were suddenly cancelled or set back.  I've had that fucker on pre-order from Amazon since 2008).

Given he claimed ADWD was already half-finished in 2006, I'm just going to email Brandon Sanderson and see if he's willing to finish off the series in the event Martin dies, 20 years from now, bitching at everyone "the book is coming when it comes, deal with it".

It's true.  All muscle and....blood.  Anyone who watched the last episode of A Game Of Thrones knows just how difficult eating a whole raw heart can be, too.

Oh come on, she took that thing down like a champ, and it was a damn horse heart.  Probably could have used some hot sauce or something though.

that was a pretty brutal scene actually.

While I was watching that scene, a bunch of us were just quiet in the room and I said, "Man, this is so hot."

I'd heard that episode 7 wasn't that good, and while I agree that it wasn't as good as the previous one, it was still pretty damn awesome.  My only real problem was when Drogo went on his pro-wrestling rant.  I'm going to have to catch these much after they air now, if at all, because I'll be out of town.  It sucks because they're getting really good now.

ETA:  The latest episode had the most graphic sex scene I have ever seen in anything.  Even a lot of porn.

Yeah, I wasn't sure I liked that scene with Littlefinger.  Littlefinger thinks of himself as a suave manipulator and Machiavellian genius, ("I told you not to trust me")...telling a couple of tarts his deep and abiding psychological reasons for fucking up The Seven Kingdoms doesn't quite sit right with me.  Not least because of the implied rivalry between him and Varys, and the latter's informants seem to be everywhere.  Littlefinger gets a lot of his own intel from his numerous brothels, so I'm not sure why he'd trust his secrets with people he treats as informants.

Yeah.  I mean, he was 100% right about his reasons and methods...but I think they could have saved that for a later season without it being a major issue.  In fact, it may have become something of a plot hook.  I know I find Littlefinger to be one of the more intriguing characters of the series (along with Jaime Lannister), and figuring out the motivations of everyone involved is half of the fun.

I thought his rant was pretty appropriate considering someone had just tried to kill his queen, his blood was up, and if he's going to tell 40,000 warriors he's taking them across water they consider poison, he should probably show them he's passionate about doing it, get them worked into a war frenzy.

and that sex scene with Petyr and his whores WAS porn as far as I'm concerned.

Man SO much still has to  happen, and the second to last episode just so happens to also be a birthday episode.

Waiting for next season is going to be torture.

Varys is pretty good, both in terms of casting and as an actual character.

And that episode was kinda transitional, yeah, even with the walking dead getting some screen time.  Though we know now the next two are pretty much going to be all killer and no filler, to fit in the rest of the book.

Also, Syrio Forel's fight was kickass.  I'd been waiting for that moment since he first appeared.  It was one of my favourite parts of the first book as well.

Also also, I'm 99% sure I know who the two figures Arya overheard talking in the castle tunnels in a previous episode were.  It's not been revealed in the books so far, but if I'm right, it means one well known character is such a Magnificent Bastard he even played Littlefinger to make him dance to his tune.

My thinking as well.  Varys and Illyrio Mopatis, the man who arranged Dany's marriage to Khal Drogo.

The Seven Kingdoms cannot stand against the Dothraki if the Lion and the Wolf are at each other's throats...it would allow Dany to stage a landing not unlike her ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, and unite a fractured Kingdom.

Also Varys' agent in the Dothraki camp is Jorah Mormont...who seems rather keen on keeping Dany alive, no?
Title: Re: A GAME OF THRONES TONIGHT MOTHERFUCKERS!
Post by: Disco Pickle on June 08, 2011, 03:17:33 PM
After just rereading the series (well, half way through book 3 atm) I'm pretty sure it's Varys and Illyrio.  Arya thinks she recognizes one of them and we know Varys has disguises, but she's sure she's never seen the other one.  The way she describes how he walks and what he's wearing leads me to believe he's from the free cities, and he's said he wants to see the Targaryens back in power.

ETA: and then there's the guards he sent her in book 3.  I wont spoil who the guard is for anyone who hasn't read it, but it makes a lot of sense that he would have gone to Illyrio, then been sent on to guard Daenerys until she can make war.

AETA: I couldn't help myself.  I'm between projects and idle at work atm so I did some digging for a comparison of the descriptions.

Quote"'If one Hand can die, why not a second?' replied the man with the accent and the forked yellow beard....He was no one Arya had ever seen before, she was certain of it. Grossly fat, yet he seemed to walk lightly, carrying his weight on the balls of his feet as a water dancer might. His rings glimmered in the torchlight, red-gold and pale silver, crusted with rubies, sapphires, slitted yellow tiger eyes. Every finger wore a ring; some had two."

Now when Dany first meets Illyrio (pg 33):

"'Regal,' Magister Illyrio said, stepping through an archway. He moved with surprising delicacy for such a massive man. Beneath loose garments of flame-colored silk, rolls of fat jiggled as he walked. Gemstones glittered on every finger, and his man had oiled his forked yellow beard until it shone like real gold."

pretty much locks that in.

With as many animals as they kill in this series, I'm surprised the ASPCA and PETA aren't all over them.  I'm glad they're not shying away from it and staying true to the book.

SPOILERS BELOW!

So Ned finally lost his head.  When he looked up to try and get one last glimpse of Arya I got chills.  It was a very well shot scene and even knowing what would happen, I was still somehow unprepared for it's finality.

I know the budget, while big, is still maybe too tight to show a few thousand people having a battle but I felt they could have at least worked in a quick scene of Jaime being taken captive.

Being that they have not included any flashbacks for any character it's understandable that we haven't seen Stannis yet, but I'm wondering if it's more deliberate so that you get this sense of a new but unseen player that is strong enough for Cerci to worry about him.

The best is still yet to come.  One more week.

I remember when I read that scene, I was like, "OMFG."  and then I put my iPad down and made sad face.  I am so pumped for next week, the ending of the next episode is gonna be so fucking epic, HEADS WILL 'SPLODE. [edit - not literally.  MAYBE.]

Also, like, it was hilarious, previous, when talking about how Boromir was typecast as Eddark Stark, because people who haven't read the books don't know JUST HOW TRUE it is!!!!  Ahahahah, noble warrior dude who dies before completing the mission!? OMFG!  *hysterical cackling*  And now people are like, "OMFG,"  and I'm all like, "I TOLD JOO."

TL;DR

I'M CRAZY AND THIS SHOW IS CRAZY AND THIS SERIES IS CRAZY AND EVERYTHING IS CRAZY.

Also
I wonder if they're going to show, in the next season, when Joffy-poo is all like, "Hey Sansa, come up to the battlements.  Look, look at my pretty spikes!  Do you know who this one is?  Do you?  Let me turn it around for you!  AHAHAHA YOUR ANGUISH SUSTAINS ME."

Martin has absolutely no problem with killing off characters you've spent an entire book or books growing to know and love.

Keep that in mind, and you'll STILL be surprised.  The third book in particular is one I had to throw across the room a few times with a "WTF JUST HAPPENED" moment or three.

I've already pre-ordered Dance with Dragons.  I'm really hoping it's longer than Feast for Crows was, but either way I plan to have in done in under a week and go back into widthdrawl.

I think it's hilarious that people are trying to make HBO explain why the character had to die.  IT'S A BOOK.  The plot can't really change.  People weren't complaining like this when Dumbledore died in the movies.

The second best thing in that gif is how The Hound (who, recall, is Prince Joffrey's bodyguard, and quite at ease with killing unarmed children) just stands aside and lets Tyrion slap the snot out of him without the barest reaction.

When even the Hound despises you, you're pretty low.

Also, LMNO, without giving away any spoilers, from here on in it's Machiavellian Intelligence Hypothesis driven social evolution.  Or, to put it more simply, Magnificent Bastards arise and do terrible things, only to be killed by even more Magnificent Bastards than they are.  It's also an arms race between insanity driven cruelty and cunning manipulation.

I think there is one scene in particular that is going to make everyone very happy, but it's (definitely) not the Red Wedding or that encounter...actually make that two scenes, very near the end.

It's weird, how minor characters as the series goes on are intriguing enough to steal whatever scenes they're in.  Whenever The Sword of the Morning is mentioned, especially in Game of Thrones where Eddard talks about the battle they had, it's just an incredible story.

And when Beric Dondarrion briefly appeared in the show I got chills.

Gah, need to stop geeking out.

He came across a little more as a Magnificent Bastard in the novels, though the creepiness towards Sansa becomes more evident as the series progresses.

I was hoping to see the dragons partaking of some of the baby milk, but that's just how I roll, and it would have been in keeping with the text of the book.

Dance with Dragons less than a month away, and one year wait  :x for Season 2.

Someone should pull a Misery on Martin to finish the damn series already.

http://twitchfilm.com/news/2011/06/sean-bean-stabbed-in-bar-fight-orders-another-drink.php

QuoteMeet Sean Bean, Manly Man.

Whilst out for a drink with a former Playboy model (Manly Point #1) thirty years younger than he is (Manly Point #2), Bean called out a passerby who made lewd comments towards his lady friend (Manly Point #3), and was rewarded by later being punched in the eye and stabbed in the arm with broken glass (Manly Point #4). Bean then went back into the bar, refused an ambulance and ordered another drink (Manly Point #5). There are no reports of what happened to the other man.

This all actually happened this past Sunday night.

And the moral of the story is: Do Not Fuck With Sean Bean.

I never got what was so great about Chuck Norris, but I think I like Sean Bean.
Actually, what happened was that Sean Bean got pissed up, and started a stupid, drunk "What did you just say" fight, with a total stranger. Who sensibly left. Bean then disappeared to take out some "Sharpes vengeance" on the dude, and wound up getting glassed in the arm, And slapped to shit.
So the moral of the story is, "If you are a wife beating alcoholic blowhard, resist the urge to get drunk and start fights with total strangers"
If you can't even manage that, you  deserve everything you get.

I just watched this shit. It's pretty cool, even though it's nothing but sex violence gore and scheming :)

I think the dwarf's my favourite. I hope he sticks around for a while.

I don't get why everybody got so upset over killing Boromir? He totally had it coming. I mean sure it was the bad guys that did it, and he and his family are supposed to be the good guys, but really? Being all "my family this" and "my honour that", what a load of crap, and meanwhile everybody around was scheming like it was going out of scope. If he wanted to be the good guy he should have chosen the Realm over his family or honour.

Well, it was cool. When's the next season start?

Casting began a few months ago for some new characters.  The woman they cast as Margery Tyrell is smoking hot and her eyes make me wet myself.

The first season began in April of this year, I expect season 2 will be around the same time next year.

I think the point the first series/book was getting across is that this isn't a world for people with the standard fantasy tropes of 'honor' and 'good guyness'.
I think the fate of Viserys was also to demonstrate that this may not quite be the world for the typical fantasy villain too.

Two more, I believe.

It was originally intended to be a trilogy, but, obviously, plot inflation made that impossible.  As I recall, this book was the "second half" of A Feast for Crows.  Which does not explain at all why it took five years to get it to the publisher.

Decided I'm going to get the Kindle version of A Dance With Dragons.  That way, it'll arrive instantly on the day it comes out.  And since I'm going to be doing a ton of travelling between the 13th and 15th, that'll give me an excellent chance to catch up on it.

And I can buy the paperback version for my dad when he catches up, which will be sometime next year at this stage.

I decided not to put my full library on, as it makes me too indecisive in regards of what to read.  I'm currently floating around the 60 book mark, but some of those were experiments in transforming different formats (ePub, PDF, badly formatted PDF etc) into .mobi.  I've discovered ePubs convert fantastically with Calibre, to the point of perfection.

But yeah, it is fantastic.  And being able to get new releases, on the day they're released, seems like a real selling point they should probably market more.

Also, the fact that, if a new release happens to hit when I'm not home, I can get it darn near anywhere.

Calibre is wonderful, and if you have a kindle, you need it.  Complicated .pdf files do tend to baffle it (like, say, RPG books), but ePubs?  Perfect.
Title: Re: A GAME OF THRONES TONIGHT MOTHERFUCKERS!
Post by: Cain on July 10, 2011, 01:21:22 PM
Well, there is an easy test for it.

If, when you click the select bar when viewing your pdf on your computer, you can select the text (individual letters) it will convert.  If not, if they are scanned images, obviously it will not*.

So long as you have access to high quality pdfs, especially those transcribed by actual publishers for the ebook market, you are OK.  The problem is, like with RPGs, several of my books are very old, very hard to find or both, and so scanned PDFs are the best I can do.  In those cases, you end up with a .mobi file several hundred megabytes in size that cannot do a thing on your Kindle.

*though selectable maps will scan really well, as I found with my copy of The Storm of War.

Brandon Sanderson will just drop everything he's doing to complete the series.  And without the annoying literary quirks of the deceased author he is standing in for.

To kill Martin, you must first kill Sanderson.

Actually, the worst thing is how the pricing for Kindle ebooks is utterly illogical.  I've seen ebook versions that cost more than the paperback or the hardback.  Or only cost 20 pence less.  Or, most usually, cost exactly the same.

I only buy ebooks when they are cheaper.  And cannot find them online for free.  Or want to read them ASAP.

Personally, I'm rather glad some books aren't available in Kindle format.  I want people to be impressed by my library, and I can't do that if I have a load of empty shelves and just my Kindle and external hard drive sitting on them.

And then a vitally important character will choke on a strategically placed fishbone, allowing a "comrade in arms" to attempt the Heimlich Maneuver.  With a dagger.

Martin will also bring up a new character's name on page 3, make no further mention of him for 997 pages, and then reveal them as a vitally important plot element during the arc's dénouement.

The Onion Knight's fate, for example, made me hate Martin.  Hate.

I'm at the part where he just got arrested, but I was pretty sure he'd never be able to kill the Red Woman in his condition.

Davos may not be actually dead.  I'm not convinced, anyway.  It would be his MO to kill a character like that offscreen, but it would also be his MO to use "the fog of war" to give fans rage-spasms while confirming nothing, and leaving off publishing the next book for FIVE DAMN YEARS to keep everyone guessing.

The only complaint I have about Kindle is the fact that not every book I want to buy has been put into that format (yet).  I went to get a book for my book club, and it wasn't Kindle-ized yet.  That sucked.

As for the new book coming out--I think I put it on preorder when I bought the whole damn kit and kaboodle (again, for the Kindle) last month...I need to recheck that, though.

ETA:  one feature I fucking love, though, is that my iPhone and Kindle keep up with each other so I don't have to carry the damned Kindle everywhere--I just whip out my phone and read where I last left off...

I also find Kindle pricing totally irritating. What the fuck. If I can get a used paper copy cheaper than a Kindle copy, 99% of the time I'll get the used copy.

I'm with you on Davos.  It was a bit too loosely said that he was dead as it was hearsay in council from the Manderlys they wanted cooperation from, but that was only if Wylis was released from Harrenhal.  And don't forget that Wendel was killed at the Red Wedding so any promise of fealty could always be a feint.

Hopefully I'll find out more about The Onion Knight's fate starting tomorrow.

Got mine.  About 12% of the way through, already.  Looks like Dany is getting a taste of terrorism from her would-be subjects, and there has already been one righteously justified death.  Also, it looks like the fate of the Onion Knight will be revealed....

Ramsay Bolton is like a skin-flaying Gregor Clegane.  As if the original Gregor wasn't bad enough.

Also, the Iron Bank seems to be finally making a play.  About time.  Since this may be a spoiler, all I'm going to say is if that Braavos = Italy, then the Iron Bank may mirror a certain Italian bank, which was very influential historically...

I'm only 100 pages in so far but should put down a deal more today as I've absolutely no projects on which to work at the moment.

Going to try and refrain from talking about it ITT for the benefit of those still catching up with the other books.  Wouldn't want to give anything away.

Title: A Game of Thrones: Genesis
Post by: Disco Pickle on July 14, 2011, 01:32:11 PM
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388482,00.asp

QuoteDwarves, dire wolves, and dragons come to life this summer with the release of A Game of Thrones: Genesis, developer Cyanide's PC-only tribute to George R.R. Martin's beloved fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

The game, being published by Focus Home Interactive, was previewed at E3 earlier this year (video below) and this week new Genesis screen shots emerged on the highly anticipated video game's official website. A Game of Thrones: Genesis was created with the help of Martin himself and ties in nicely with the just-concluded and critically acclaimed HBO season of the "Game of Thrones" miniseries.

The major noble houses of Westeros can all be played in the sprawling game universe that covers 1,000 years of history in the fictional land of knights and ladies, with the game kicking off with warrior-queen Nymeria's arrival in Dorne from the eastern continent of Essos long before the actual events of A Song of Ice and Fire actually take place.

The historical span of the game covers such events as the rise of the White Walkers that are currently familiar to Martin's fandom only in historical snippets peppered throughout his books, but also moves into the events that happen closer to the time of the series, such as Robert Baratheon's usurpation of the Iron Throne of Westeros.

Up to eight players can vie for the Iron Throne, or the game can be played solo, according to the official site. All of the major noble houses of the continent can be played, and each affords gamers with a special ability and a special unit, not unlike the last few editions of the turn-based favorite, Civilization.

Thus, House Targeryan gets better results from secret arrangements and its knights are more powerful than those of other houses. The Dragon Lords are also the only house with the Raven unit, which can neither attack nor be attacked, but which can fly over any part of the continent and detect enemy stealth units. House Stark has stronger commanders and Direwolf units, House Baratheon marshals superior archers and has a special Captain of the Guards unit, etc.

Here's how to succeed at building up the "prestige" necessary to win A Game of Thrones: Genesis, according to Cyanide:

"Accessing the Iron Throne is achieved by building up Prestige for your House. Different ways are at your disposal: amassing wealth, building many alliances, controlling the Sept temples, slaughtering the opponent ...

"However, some actions may also lead to Prestige loss: laying siege to an enemy castle or town during peace time, being a victim of a secret alliance, having your bastard sons discovered, and others."

Not sure how I feel about this.

slight spoiler below but nothing really revealing..  Cain, what page are you on?

Holy hell he just dropped a bomb 200 some odd pages in.  Fuck YES this one almost makes up for 6 years of waiting.  Looks like Varys is better at plotting than I had ever thought.

I'm about 80% of the way through.  I'm actually on the fence about that particular revalation.

Edit for further explanation: it strikes me as a little too twee and Tolkeinesque.  Even Pratchett mocked that particular trope.  Now, if Varys had arranged it so a child was brought up thinking they were that person, but with no actual evidence, that would make me warm to it a bit.  But that does not seem to be the case, given whose care he is in and his physical characteristics.

I do like the introduction of the Golden Company, however.  The Blackfyre rebellion didn't just spring out of nowhere, and houses that supported the rebels still exist (and just look at who some of those houses are allied to!).  I also like how the War of the Five Kings is becoming increasingly internationalised, with the Free Cities and Slavers Bay being increasingly drawn into the fighting.

I missed my calling.  I've found 3 errors in the book so far.  Two are typos, one is just sloppy and stupid editing.

3/4 of the way through and I'm thinking this one really rivals Swords for best book in the series so far.

Yeah, I saw a few on my Kindle version as well.  Should've highlighted them and sent them to the publisher - that's one way they pick for copy editors.

Definitely the best since a Storm of Swords, at least.  But the fun's not over yet...

I've have the page #s for two of them but I'd have to skim over the first chapters for the first one.

The one where Kevan tells Cercei that Lancel was her nephew was the one really stuck out because that's not just sloppy spell checking.

Maybe I'll forward them on after I've finished.

A Feast for Crows will just disappoint you.

I'd like to know where Martin is going with some of this.  Unresolved issues that stand out from A Dance With Dragons:

Lightbringer doesn't actually provide heat.  Rather unusual for a blade dedicated to Rhllor.  Melisandre seems sincere enough in her faith...but then she also births shadows which kill people, which doesn't exactly sound like something a light-bringing fire god would approve of, even if fire does create shadows.

The Watch's records don't go back 998 commanders.  OK, records get lost, especially ancient ones, but why does Martin mention it?

What is Jaqen (for want of a better name) doing involving himself with the Maesters?

Why are Varys and Illryio so devoted to the Targaryen line?

The Stranger/The Many-Named God/The Enemy - all the same being?  Worth thinking about.  Their domains seem to overlap, especially when it comes to death.

What exactly was the Doom of Valyria?

Will Daenerys ever stop wangsting?

I don't think Stannis' "Lightbringer" is Lightbringer at all. It's just a prop. The real Lightbringer may show up later (though it may not even be a literal sword). My guess is that Mel is just plain wrong in her interpretation re: Stannis because it's increasingly obvious that it's Dany (if anyone) who fits the bill for the prophecy she's always yammering about.
Title: Re: This thread is now an A Dance With Dragons Spoiler thread.
Post by: Cain on September 02, 2011, 06:09:27 AM
Yeah, that almost certainly seems to be the case.

But then again, Dany ain't doing so hot as of the last book, I think becoming a world-saving Messiah figure may be somewhat above her pay grade.

And that's the thing, about Melisandre?  Is she just plain wrong?  There's something entirely off about that woman, her motivations and her actions.  She seems sincere in her worship of Rhllor...but as I recall, early on in the series, it sorta hinted that magic started dying out when dragons became a rare commodity.  It could just be the Rhllor faith somehow preserved the rituals and techniques which allow magic to work, and Melisandre isn't doing the will of Rhllor at all, and is just listening to the fanatical imaginings of her own mind.

And that's the best interpretation of what she's up to.  All the others involve knowingly decieving Stannis, which of course raises questions, such as "to what end" and "who is she really serving then, if anyone?"  For someone who declares The Enemy is Death (probably the same god the Faceless Men worship, aka also probably The Stranger) she sure does seem keen on dishing death out and using seriously fucked up magic to kill people (Renly).  And she's almost certainly been urging Stannis to use a blood magic ritual to sacrifice Robert's bastard son, Edric Storm, in order to wake the dragon eggs he has in his possession.

Bump.

Or possibly, my above speculation was totally wrong.  I re-read A Dance With Dragons and it is my belief that the Red God and the Faceless Men are related.  Fire makes shadows and shadows are what the Faceless Men use to achieve their tasks.  They also share similar abilities in the field of illusion.

Also, perhaps far more revealingly, there was a departure from the books in last night's episode of A Game of Thrones.  Melisandre came to visit the Brotherhood without Banners, and greeted Thoros with "Valar Morghulis" (all men must die).  While it's not explicitly a phrase of the Faceless Men, it is very suggestive.

As an aside, I'm really liking the quality of actors this season has introduced.  Paul Kaye is surprisingly good as Thoros, and Roose Bolton is wonderfully cold.  Mance Rayder was a pleasant surprise too, though he has lacked for screen time, which is unfortunate.

I saw that as more of an attempt to remove the Edric storm plotline and use Gendry as a replacement.

I'm pretty sure there was a link between the faceless men and the doom of valyria, I recall it being implied that the first to get "the gift" was a slave and they gave it to the masters later.

Overall, I'm just enjoying that this is one of the few shows that surpass the books in many ways. Not quite sure how they're going to handle the next couple of seasons though.
Title: Re: This thread is now an A Dance With Dragons Spoiler thread.

That too, though I had wondered before A Dance With Dragons whether Mesliandre was in fact a priestess of the Red God.  Her own chapters confirmed it, but it was nice to see that Thoros also did the same.

They did, though I don't know about it being related to the Doom.  From the sound of it, the Doom might have been a natural disaster, some dragon-fuelled national meltdown, blood magic gone horribly wrong or some mix of all three (betting on it now: insane experiments involving getting dragons to have the explosive power of volcanos).

It also occured to me this episode how clever the wall is.  It becomes more powerful the deeper winter is.  And we know the Others are somehow linked to extremely cold weather.  So the wall becomes stronger as the threat goes larger.  It is, in fact, antifragile.

Post by: Junkenstein on May 06, 2013, 09:13:56 PM
My best bet for the doom is an assassination after the cult had spread with said disaster being an intended (or unintended) consequence. High ranking figure controlling ancient powers set loose kind of thing.

There were a couple of references to huge fuck off ice spiders and other giant nameless shit attacking the wall in times of old. I'm guessing at least 50% of the "legends" are going to turn out to be actually real and you really do need a wall this big. And it's still not enough.

It's also surprising that the TV show is one of the few I'd recommend in favour of the book. Rare. I've given up on the next book coming before the show catches up.

I've heard actually quite a few people say they prefer the show, though most of them saw the show first and picked up the books later.

My favorite parts of the books, though, is the depth.  You get a feel for the depth of the rivalries when you learn more about how they started.  And then there's the characters who only show up in the books, like my personal favorite, Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning.
