We get outdoorsy types like that too, but we call them "Ramblers". They bumble around in packs, with nylon cagoules on, wielding Ordnance Survey Landranger maps, sensible leather boots, and Bobble hats. Rather than being feral, these cunty nuggets of socially awkward middle aged Librarian types have packed lunches, bottles of tepid Lemon Barley Water, and "Ramble" across any old bit of greenery, going from Youth Hostel to Bed and Breakfast, by the most tortuous and muddy route possible. Farmers, when alerted to their presence on their Land, often spontaeneously decide it's time to go muckspreading, jump in their Tractors, and proceed to spray these trespassing, Daily Express reading "Real Ale" drinking "Happy Campers" with gallons of well rotted down pigshit. Quite right too, if you ask me.

As far as Americans trying to prove "authenticity", a lot of that gets down to legal aspects. For example, scholarships are offered if you are a certain race, a minority in general, female, or able to prove financial need. On top of that we have affirmative action, which is if I (75% german, 25% hungarian whitey McWhite white, from a well off household) Get the exact same scores as another guy, (identical in every way except he's black) when applying for college, that college is legally required to accept him before me, for no reason other than he is black and I'm not. That goes for all 'minorities' though, pretty much anyone who can prove they've got a bit of non-white in them.

2.  The US government can not and does not attempt to verify your race or ethnic group.  You can be just as Black as you like, and they won't say a word.

Still catching up after the holiday, but here's my take for what its worth...



2. I think several people hit key contributors to the lack of diversity in Discordianism. I saw an equal lack of diversity in a number of philosophy based lj groups and similar forums. Minorities in the US are predominantly fire and brimstone christians (or catholics for the hispanics) and this stuff is pretty close to blasphemy. Hell, there are few minority pagans (for the prominent Wicca-like varieties).

Since Wicca is an attempt at recreating Celtic religion non white Wiccans look kind of silly to me, not that embracing a different culture's religion is silly, Christians are embracing a middle eastern religion after all, but Wicca is explicitly an attempt to rediscover Celtic roots.  The validity of that rediscovery compared to how much is made of Gerald Gardner's feces (all of it) not being the point.

There are other branches of paganism that are primarially minority, voudoun for instance is mostly black.

Discordia isn't an attempt to recreate the roots religion of any culture, so it shouldn't be hampered by that particular limitation.

(Just pointing out one important factor that is going to serve to naturally limit Wicca)

bears here are just black bears, which we had in the Smokies. Ran across mama bear and cubs three times while hiking various trails, aside from having to wait for them to go on their way they weren't bad.

DO NOT HIKE ALONE. Make plenty of noise to reduce your chances of surprising a lion. Go in groups, with adults supervising children. A sturdy walking stick is a good idea: you can use it to ward off a lion.

We don't have big sticks here, unless it's still attached to a dead and downed tree in a wash, and that's something else you don't want to fuck with.  Spiders, scorpions, and snakes prefer those kinds of hangouts. We got black bears here, too, but more up towards Mount Lemmon than down here. I think we got browns too.

Lots of sticks here, so that won't be a problem. There are some ski poles in our L&F, and they'd totally make good walking/stabbing tools.

Mine didn't (the first time anyway, the second try they did).  But that was more because at the time we fell into that screwy category where you don't qualify for financial aid, and don't have enough money.  I ended up in a really screwy place where I was offered a 13k year scholarship and still couldn't afford to go to an out of state college (or at least, not the ones I applied too, there might be cheaper ones I missed).

As for you PH, work your ass off and get a damned academic scholarship, even if your grades aren't great study your ass off for your SAT/ACTs and get some AP tests under your belt (A couple AP 5s and a 1500 SAT will open all kinds of doors, even with a 3.nil GPA).
