The primary reason that i believe, as a general rule, that the world is full of conspiracies (although i don't pump any particular one, really) is precisely that.  If i had great resources, I would fucking everybody....

That makes so much sense!  When I was 14 and I'd first read Illuminatus!, I totally believed in the Bavarian Illuminati, and  I'm pretty sure I harbored hopes of getting in.
