I know it's not "nice" to hate people with mental illnesses. And honestly, I don't hate them if it's treated and under control. But not too long ago, I realized that separating the person from the behavior is a false dichotomy, and that my intense sense of repulsion toward out-of-control schizophrenics and other dangerously crazy people is self-protection, and I am not going to downplay or conceal it.

I do have to say, in light of your earlier comment, that schizophrenia is not a predictor of one's propensity towards violence. The most recent data on that says there is no difference between the levels of violence amongst schizophrenics and the general population. If you're concerned about violence then things like being young, male and a drug user are much more reliable qualities to consider.

I've thought a lot about the whole separating the person and behavior as well, but I came to the opposite conclusion: it's a key distinction to make, when it's practically possible to do so. Otherwise, I think we fall victim to our pre-wired illusions via the "fundamental attribution error". Given the stresses you're under right now, it makes sense to forgo the extra energy it takes to counteract this tendency so you can focus on more important things in your life.

But when we're not under heavy stress I find that distinction to be invaluable and try to make it as much of a habit as possible.

I had skimmed it.  I'll find it again.  There's a lot of stuff here and I'm doing other stuff so I'm gonna be a little slow on the in-jokes.  If some of the good material wasn't so good here I'd have left this forum alone a while ago due to the extraordinary volume of the in-knowledge needed to get the jokes in them, or even to answer basic questions.
