I think people are conflating two separate issues. My desire to attract more foreign-speaking posters is a completely separate issue than whether or not Khore is a troll (or just a jackass).

And hell, if we get some posters that speak tagalog, I'll make a tagalog subforum. And so on. I'm perfectly willing to have several different language-specific subforums as long as it gets those people HERE and posting and trading/absorbing ideas. Maybe some of them will even be curious enough to learn some basic english so they can dig on the rest of the site. Maybe some of us will get to learn a little bit of some other languages and/or how discordianism manifests itself in such completely disparate cultures.

I personally agree that there is a big potential for lulz if we begin to incorporate Discordians from other countries.

We do however need to remember that they may or may not speak our languange at all and whatever translation program they use, no matter which one they use, there are always glitches which can make it look like you said one thing when you really said another.  For example.....

Je suis personnellement d'accord qu'il y a un grand potentiel de lulz si nous commençons à incorporer Discordians d'autres pays. Nous avons cependant besoin de se rappeler qu'ils peuvent ou ne peuvent pas parler notre languange et quelle que soit la traduction programme qu'ils utilisent, quel qu'il soit qu'ils utilisent, il y a toujours erreurs qui peuvent lui faire le ressembler à vous a dit une chose, vous avez réellement dit une autre.

Io personalmente sono d'accordo che c'è un grande potenziale per lulz se si cominciano a recepire discordiani provenienti da altri paesi. Dobbiamo però ricordare che essi possono o non possono parlare languange e qualunque sia il nostro programma di traduzione che essi utilizzano, non importa che uno che essi utilizzano, ci sono sempre imperfezioni che possono fare è guardare come lei ha detto una cosa veramente ha detto un altro.

Ich persönlich stimme, dass es hier ein großes Potential für lulz wenn wir beginnen, die Discordians aus anderen Ländern. Let me see, generally speaking when you post a facepalm, if it does not refer to the post directly before yours, then you quote it.  As you quoted without the given disclosure from the quote, it was a natural presumption.

Am I really the only one who sees the value in attracting posters from non-Anglophone countries?

I sure hope not, given that one of the posters who has contributed the most to this site falls into that category.

But I guess if Trip wanted to bring some other Belgians here and communicated with them in Belgian we'd tell him to get fucked too, right? I mean, people who don't speak our language clearly have nothing of value to offer us.

Frankly, I'm a bit ambivalent of actually posting here in another language than English. I've thought about this before¹, and my conclusion was that without some sort of Google Translate plugin, it would get difficult. But we can surely try it as an experiment to see how it goes.

If I were to bring Dutch friends here, they'd speak English (I've tried but so far I just got them to read some good bits, most of them don't have time for a forum is the biggest reason). It would also bring another problem, because they speak English fluently, they'd be conversing with everyone on the forum just fine, but in the hypothetical Belgian subforum they'd post Dutch and you might get all sorts of gossipy backtalking about our Anglophone members who cannot read it but will see their usernames pop up now and then, and even with the best intentions you know how it goes and I dunno things might get ugly.


¹ actually I was once thinking of setting up a Dutch Discordian forum, but given that most Dutch speak English and I'd invite you guys over as well, it'd get multilingual pretty soon, and be the same sort of thing. Not that I have time or energy to do that but it was an idea.

Me, personally, if I see my name pop up, especially in a language I don't immediately understand, I'm going to try my damnedest to understand the context and intent before jumping to a conclusion. But I get your point.

As it is, I like the idea of attempting bilingual communication. One, gives me a reason to brush up on my Spanish when I have free time to do so. Two, it encourages participation from non-English speakers. So, yeah, let's see how it goes. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
