Mesozoic Mister Nigel

If they were all like that, there wouldn't be anybody left for the po'buckers to be like that AT.
"I'm guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk," Charles Wick said. "It was very complicated."

All sorts of wonderful sentiments were expressed in this open-minded communal forum. I'm so glad to see the community coming together on important issues.

I distinctly remember being told, on this very board, that the SE was just the same as the rest of the country, and that making fun of these morons was the same as making fun of Blacks, etc.

Well, I have to say that you'd never see any shit like this in Tucson or Chicago.

Who said that?

Can't remember.  It was during the big privilege riot.

Thing is, I know that not all Southeasterners are po'buckers, and not all po'buckers are Southeasterners.   But I will say that the highest concentration of po'buckers are in Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

A lot of Kentucky people are very friendly, and share whatever they have freely.
Until they see you in the same car with a Black person.
THEN THEY ALL SHUN YOU. Fact. Had it happen.

I've had my doubts that Tennessee was worse than average as far as racism, but it's probably just something in the back of my mind to make me feel better about being stuck here. Not sure, but it's possible that non-southern racists are drawn to the south, and my experiences with these people have skewed my perception of the rest of the country, making it seem more racist. I may not be the only one with this warp in their perception. I suspect it to be a wide spread complex amongst southern liberals. Somebody should do a study.

I've insulated myself somewhat from that part of the local culture. My workplace is pretty diverse. Less than half the people at my level are white. The manager is a black lady, but everyone above her, as far as I can tell, is a rich white guy, and I don't think they are from the south. California, mostly, if I recall. Our insurance package covers domestic partners, which amazed me when I found out.

I was, and still am disappointed with this bullshit. The Muslims have been here for decades, and I never heard a peep out of anyone about it until they tried to build themselves a nice building to do their thing in. Then it was all "ZOMG!! INVASION!!!!".

For some reason, it kind of caught me by surprise.

Way to go, Tennessee. I didn't think you still had it in you.

Distinctly heard "niggers go home" in the opening few seconds.

I think he's saying "traitors".

If they're traitors, isn't home by definition where they are?  :lulz:

I heard a LOT of "peeps" from the time they started moving here in the 80's. The first time was when I was travelling with some then-friends and stopped at a hotel. There were some Indian women working there (and they appeared to be Hindus, not Muslims) and just when I was thinking how cool it was to see people from there, my so-called cool friends started muttering about "A-rabs", "dot-heads" and "sand n-s", and how much they hated them.

I don't even know where it came from. This was WAY before 911.

Arabs had a bad rep in the US due to various Middle East shenanigans dating back to the 60s.  Remember, the accepted framing of the Israeli-Arab issues was "plucky Holocaust survivors threatened by monolithic totalitarian religious threat" rather than "South Africa 2.0".

Of course Arafat and his PLO buddies back in the 70s didn't exactly help matters.

Amusing that if you change "Was" to "IS" that entire sentence still applies. That frame is bolted to the wall. And guarded.

No, they didn't.  Taking the fight internationally may have been portrayed as a logical step based on the situation in the occupied territories at the time, but it had way more to do with the PLO asserting dominance over other Palestinian groups, using it's higher profile to get more recruits, funding etc.

That this would involve blowback on the Palestianian cause as a whole, did not, as far as I can tell, unduly concern Arafat or the PLO leadership.

And this is part of the reason people say "Israel is our only ally in the region", despite the fact that they have never, ever acted as an ally.

Consider yourself lucky.

I had to discipline someone today regarding racism and not knowing the difference between Africa and India.
