And, while I'm making multiple posts replying to myself, what the hell is up with the use of the term "pissbaby" as an insult?

I mean, it's vaguely better than shitlord, but not by much. And shitlord's British.  I mean, if you're going to culturally appropriate my language motherfuckers, at least use some of the hard shit.

It is because most of the people on Tumblr are either literally or mentally about 12 years old, and any insults they come up with are therefore likely to be some kind of variation on poo-poo-head.

You know, the funniest one is the thisisthinprivilege one that Alty pointed out.  Not because they're fat, of course, but because listening to them, you'd think that fat people are in exactly the same boat as, say, Blacks.

Quote of the day (caps not mine):  "THIN PEOPLE DO NOT GET TO TELL FAT PEOPLE WHAT IS AND ISN'T FAT SHAMING."

This was in the middle of a rather long rant about how unfair the universe is.

"There are a lot of doctors out there who suck at their fucking jobs, and all they diagnose a fat person with is being fat. No fucking shit, asshole. I have had better luck diagnosing myself with Google that I'm gotten out of most doctors. Doctors refuse to help fat people ON THE REGULAR, and we fucking know it. We have LIVED it."

Sounds like Goddamn Chuck D sounding off about cops beating someone to death.

Am I the only one that finds this ridiculous?

I don't think they are making an effort to bring in that comparison.

Meanwhile, fat shaming is very, very prevalent in our culture. It is fully socially acceptable. Doctors do in fact cause people harm by making assumptions about their weight and their body type. Whether those people on thisisthinprivilege are correct on each point they try to make or not, the bias and dangerous results thereof do exist.

One example I can think of is the person who wrote about being given diabetes medication when they did not have diabetes. Doctors make many mistakes in the course of their work, and those related to weight are not the only ones, but the combined effect of our cultures propensity for judging people by their weight and those kinds of mistakes, I think, may amplify those mistakes in that particular segment of the populace.

Well, between the bellowed complaints and the utter hostility to anyone not of their particular oppressed set, I find myself not caring.  More often laughing.

Not about the various problems, mind you, but about the people on tumblr itself.  Hell, if it hadn't been for the big privilege blowup here, I'd assume that anyone discussing it was Garbo or tumblr or whatever, and just walk away and never care about the issue itself.  Fortunately, we had some sane people here that managed to walk us all past the crazy.

I've put on a few pounds over the last 4 years.  Not only is this HEALTHY and NORMAL, it's NOT MY FAULT.  And they don't make Speedos in my size.

The problem I have with the whole "fat acceptance activism" thing is that while I agree that fat people should not be deprived of rights, I disagree that being fat is an inborn orientation. It is a consequence of a number of health choices, of a mental disorder, or in rare cases of a physical disorder, and it is not healthy, nor is acceptance a particularly good idea. Consider "alcoholism acceptance" or perhaps "poor dental hygiene acceptance" or "anti-vaccination acceptance" for contrast.

I say that even though I have a child who is fat, and I don't want her to experience social ostracization for being fat, but at the same time I don't want her to give in to the easy temptation of deciding that being fat is totally fine and she shouldn't bother with exercise or changing her diet. Because IT WILL KILL HER.

For that matter, I'm about 15 pounds overweight, and even though that's not a lot it's enough that it's negatively impacting my health. If I lose the weight I'll probably also lose my hypertension. Which obviously hasn't been enough to make me get to it yet, but my efforts have at least stopped me from gaining any MORE weight.

My problem with it is that tumblrites confuse "not being a dick" with "fat acceptance" with "healthy at any size", the latter of which is a dangerous and pernicious set of beliefs which tell fat people they're not really unhealthy and allow them to perpetuate a dangerous lifestyle.

The way I see it, it's the usual case of everything either being one ridiculous extreme or the other. Either fat people are mocked and ridiculed and discriminated against or fat is just as beautiful as athletic and there's nothing wrong with it and we need more positive fat role models so children know there's nothing wrong with sitting on a sofa all day, stuffing your face full of cheeseburgers.

Truth is being fat is really really bad for you and this should be probably be impressed on everyone, without giving the poor bastards who suffer from it a hard time about it.

The other thing that bugs me (one of my hobby horses) is that weight and bulk and diet is not what's wrong. Diet maybe within reason, you need a decent balance and avoid consuming too much toxic material but how much you eat means virtually nothing when compared to your overall level of fitness and this requires regular exercise.

The message has become a bit clearer in recent years but a lot of revolving door weight watcher programs still stress diet first and tag "going for a walk occasionally" as an afterthought. Sure, cutting back on carbs, will give a useful initial boost but building a healthy muscle mass and metabolism is the main event.

Being fit seems like hard work when your used to sitting on your arse all day. When you're in shape, hard work is something you crave.

At the end of the day, like smoking or drinking, it's a lifestyle choice. If you're happy weighing half a ton and living a decade or two less than you normally would, who the fuck am I to say it's not your right? What pisses me off is people who aren't happy with their physical condition telling me I'm fucking lucky. Like, "yeah, buddy, I'm lucky I got a body that does what you train it to do, same as everyone else on the goddamn planet"  :argh!:

I have absolutely no problem with acceptance of it, in the same way that I have come to accept free gun proliferation I see it as a self correcting problem.
