I think threadjacking is inevitable mostly because a lot of people don't like to go back and read the history of the thread.  It's like that game you play in school where you sit at a table and the teacher whispers something in your ear, then you to the classmate sitting beside you, so on and so forth.  So the teacher says "I like puppies" and by the end it's "The Janitor likes to touch wee-wees."
