Funnily enough, coutesy is about a little more than smiling and saying 'please' before you stick someone with a knife. Misanthropy is discourteous (for wide and hand wavy definitons of discourteous). I also didn't necessarily mean to imply that you were discouteous - I mean to point out that, just because you find yourself surrounded by uncle-fuckers doesn't mean that 'people'(TM) are actually like that.

Again, there's a difference between society and the fuckers that comprise it. And for GODDESSSAKE, 'burn it to the ground' IS A FUCKING METAPHOR! Yes, it implies some sort of violent or at least unpleasant transition, but who said that was a bad thing? You think the Thuddites are just all going to wake up one day and say, "duh, gee guys... I guess you were right and I should think for myself."????? Not. Somebody is going to have to slap them across the face, or pour water over them to rouse them from their consensual coma.

Those are all metaphors.

Don't confuse low expectations with soullessness.

I resist the temptation to coin a PC phrase like "soul diminshed' for this occasion but only so I can be plain: lowered expectations are the first symptom of soullessness.

I respectfully disagree. You cannot love people for what they could become in your eyes. You must love them for what they are, or not at all. People do not change unless it suits them to do so - you can help them if they want it, but you cannot talk someone into changing the way they percieve the world unless they want to. (I'm not touching the subject of mindfuckery here) Net result, most people wind up being Thuddites, cabbages or greyfaces, cause it's easier to do what society tells you than to think for yourself (common Discordian catma-type statement, right?). And that's what I expect from them.

But having low expectations doesn't mean I stopped looking for members of the unenlightened eristic horde out there... it just means I stopped being pissed off that I never found them.

Uh... the Discordian ones? Revolutionaries want to remake society with them in charge. Anarchists want to remake society with no one in charge. As near as I can tell, Discordians want to play a much shinier game and let 'society' take care of itself.

Once again, my talent for oversimplification bites me in the ass... I knew when I was writing that that I was falling into a trap.

Anyway: NAH, Discordians want to remake society just like everybody else - they just understand the need to do it without any real organization or cooperation. I mean, what's the avowed purpose of OM? tear down everybody's reality-tunnels and offer nothing to replace it, right? forcing people to think for themselves, right?

A world where everybody thinks for themselves *is* a world remade in our image... We already know that our way isn't the right way - now if only we could convince everybody else, eh?

Anyway, my point there was only that discordianism stands opposed to society (regardless of it's active intentions thereto) and I didn't expect to be taken to task for expressing my belief that it should be replaced.

But I guess that's what I get for not having expectations, eh?

I'll skip replying in detail to much of what you said suffice to say that I think the majority of our discussion has arisen from us using words in slightly different ways. I suspect we'd actually agree on most things, at least in essence.

A couple of things though:

1.  book full of oversimplified definitions for  things based solely on the philosophical and cultural biases of the people who wrote it that is utterly useless as an arbiter of semantic disagreements.  

b) That bit about burning things to the ground being a metaphor: I realise that but I think that an initial stance that people are all capable of learning better and becoming better is the way to go rather than the 'a slap upside the head to wake them up is the only thing that works' approach. This is not to say that the (obviously metaphorical) slap upside the head doesn't have it's place; it is to say that IMO the slap upside the head should be used in special (rather than general) circumstances.

I was going to get all worked up and launch into the 'society is the people who make it up - it is not, no not even a little, distinct from them' rant but then I read this bit. I used to believe that society was a system but now (and by now I mean earlier this morning) I believe(d) that society was only an emergent property of groups of people and not seperable from them. I shall have to muse on the idea that society is a meme and come to grok it (again?) before I feel that I can meaningfully continue this discussion (and it may well be that the grokking renders continuation of this discussion moot).

It really makes me sick when I hear people ranting about how society is so awful and most people out there are so crooked and self-centered.  Out of all people that I have dealt with from simple customers to best friends, this claim ultimately fails.  Granted when it comes to sexual relationships, some of the more disgusting things man is capable of can come forth, but that is no foundation for calling society as a whole something that needs to be "burned to the ground." If that were to happen, it would just form back into what we have today.  The only way to go is changing people's minds.

(Though I do live in Maine, and people tend to be fairly better mannered in this state....)

One thing that would help is if this country had less fake Christians and more Christians that actually followed the moral teachings of the religion.  I was Catholic for 17 years of my life, and left the religion because I did not believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit, or the Bible...but mainly just those.
