  Well, EoC, the advice to SEND them to GET them is a good one.

The indexing works perfectly at. Its the sheer size of the db that causes it to lock to the important stuff slowly, the server hardware isn't amazing and the larger the database is the slower the forum goes.
If you think it won't help then leave it. Its just when I log into the mysql menu for the site, the pm table does show up as open and with half a meg overhead.

Ok that is PHPmyAdmin, I suppose? I didn't know our server had that.

Doesn't it have some kind of option where you can re-scan or defragment or something the tables? Although that might take a while.

Leave it for now so, I will look into it and see. And yes, smf are useless at answering any question related to the db and not some superficial modification for the forum.
As to the linearity of the search times and size of the db.
When the site was 500 erroring on every third or fourth request and I did the huge prune of old threads it stopped happening. And I know for a fact I didn't get rid of more then half the DB.

Ok I believe you, it just bugs me that, on the general scale of things, and average hardware even if it's on shared hosting, the entire size of the database is somewhere between 50 and 100MB right? That's not something a computer less than 10 years old should make a big deal out of, I would guess. OTOH we do get a lot of hits too.

Were 70 meg ZIPPED. Its into three hundred unzipped. I've tried the optimize on the forum which works a bit, but the time I tried it on the phpmyadmin and it closed/edited all open tables that were over a certain size and killed the site.
