My brother and I did unpaid 24-hour shifts at the ambulance service this summer because we wanted to use our EMT training but neither of us wanted to actually be employed there, and we both work part-time with the fire department as first responders. He also tried to join the Navy but they wouldn't let him because he was 4 lbs. overweight, so now he's trying to lose that weight so they'll let him in. We both regularly donate to charities, and we both volunteer at the homeless shelter.  Do we win?

Well to be honest, the requirements to get in are lower than to stay in. He already has more slack than what would required to stay in.

I never said that anything I've done is more than what anyone else would do, I was trying to make the point that we can *all* be heroes without wearing a fucking costume.

My suggestion is that you learn a way to do this without using critical comparisons. You can say "This guy is amazing and cool! Talk about a real-life superhero!" without also saying "Compared to him, those other guys everyone thinks are cool are total chumps!"

It was the negative comparison that really took it awry. Also, you brought your pet topic into someone else's thread, and that rubbed people the wrong way.

This is what I'm trying to say.
People who do things because it's the *right* thing to do, and aren't looking for credit, go unnoticed.
People who dress up like "super heroes" and are essentially a, as coyote put it, "neighbour hood watch" in costume, and are barely that, if anything, have their own fucking website where they all circle jerk each other and fight for media attention.

I don't care if you want to play dress ups and do good things, I'm in favour of it, weirdness is awesome.
But I do care when you decide that people who do drugs deserved to be bashed up instead of helped, that someone thinks it's their moral obligation to stop people from flirting and picking up just because *they* had one bad experience in love, or go on some ones word that "someone" is doing a "bad" thing and something must be done about it when that person is completely innocent and has their life ruined because of some random asshole who doesn't like them.

I'm sorry, but it's just something I feel pretty strongly about, and maybe jumped a bit too hard into it.

I just can't help but feel there's a darker side to all this "awesomeness" of people running around in costumes that people are just going to ignore.

I don't want to be a fucking kill joy, but I don't want people getting hurt because of their "heroics" and I don't like people who DESERVE to be acknowledged and credited for their contributions to society to go unnoticed because there are other random ass holes stealing the spotlight.
