When I went it took about 4 1/2 hours in light traffic to get from the California-Oregon border to Portland.

I'm about to drive from the bay area to Portland.  It's maybe HALF that bad and I'm dreading it.

Oh maybe I over estimated as that's where I'm from as well.  How long is it supposed to take?

Takes about 12 hours from Bay to Portland IME.

Google maps thinks it's less, but then it would.

(Sorry if I derailed this thread a bit.)

If you don't stop to eat or shit, it would be about 10 hours.

I personally believe in stopping to eat and shit.

My scheme is to buy all my meals in advance, eating from a nutrient array in the passenger seat.   That way I can limit my stops to a minimum.  Making dookies only sets me back maybe ten minutes, but stopping for food can take a lot longer.

I highly recommend stopping for food and to walk around a bit at least a couple of times. You'll feel a lot better when you resume travel. It only adds a couple of hours, but you'll also feel better when you do arrive.

I've made that drive and variations on it I can't guess how many times... three dozen maybe? I invariably feel less tired upon arrival when I stop to eat and walk around a bit a couple of times, than when I try to go straight through.

Ohhh... and did you say you're taking 101? Can I highly recommend that you not?

I'm taking I-5.  I think 101 is more fun during the summer, with people to enjoy it with.  While there's not twisty, maybe icy roads next to cliffs.

Good!

Icy roads, falling rocks, cliffs, and mudslide season. :)

You're the mad one.  I'm nowhere near good enough at driving with my knees.
