You know, also, there is the "obvious crazy" factor, in that when people are saying wildly inappropriate shit in public places, there is probably something wrong with them that goes beyond racism.

Tom said some stupid racist stuff and is likely to get killed if he keeps that shit up. He gets some sympathy for being a vet whose brains were scrambled by the war, but that's no license to walk around being a racist fuckwad.

I have to agree with Nigel that Michael was nuts to risk his life (Jesus-fucking-Christ-in-the-asshole Tom is the size of a RHINO and about as intelligent as one to boot) over idiotic comments from a drug-addled vet. Still, it's understandable to not take racist bullshit sitting down, even if that means you might get seriously injured. But throwing punches over a few nasty comments from a stranger rarely seems worth it.

The message Michael was sending people on the bus (which he said was a major motivation in doing what he did) was that the way to deal with racist language is with physical confrontation. If everybody did that there would just be a lot of dead people of many skin tones who no longer can support their families. Better to let the racists live in their delusional world and spew retardation until they start acting on their beliefs in meaningful ways. Then it's time to lob bricks.

Of course, all this is easy to say in sober hindsight as a white guy.

I would agree with you for the most part, but speaking as someone who has spent a large part of his life in a place where racism and random racially-motivated violence against people with MY skin color is a part of life, I think there are definitely (though rarely) times when physical violence is a justified response. Sadly, it's the only language some people understand. Not that I necessarily think this was one of those times, but I certainly understand and sympathize with the mindset.

Sometimes I forget its not a good idea to tease like that, since we do that here ..My bad. The culture is definatly different here. I do have Black friends and we mock each other (I'm the white boy). I don't think its just here that it is limited to .. I don't know, maybe its a rare group I found? I haven't experienced America.

see, i would limit the times that it is justified to use the language of violence to when the other party has switched to that mode of speech first...

I know i sound naive for thinking everything can be solved with words, but I don't think it's always cool to beat the shit out of someone to "teach em a lesson". That doesn't always work and often times makes the person more hostile and bitter.
